View Full Version : I think my 360's DVD drive is about to crap out.

Almost every time I insert a game disc into the drive, a white screen comes up either that "this disc is designed for the Xbox 360 console", like if you were to insert a game DVD into a regular DVD player. Is anyone else getting this message frequently?

Alot of the games I have bought lately, are doing this. And if that screen doesn't come up, I get the usual dirty disc error.

there is nothing physically wrong with the discs. And fortunately, I haven't red ringed, yet. But I'm worried now, It's only a matter of time....

My 360 was doing the same thing, and as you're probably guessing, it eventually got worse and wouldn't read anything. Mine was also making some nasty grinding noises with some disks as well, although it wasn't damaging the disc in any way.

But here's the good news: Once it finally crapped out I called MS and they sent a coffin no questions asked. My 360 was dated 5-06 and this happened in June of '07 I believe. I thought I was going to be out of the standard 1 year warranty (3 years is supposedly for red rings only) but they didn't say anything about that. Additionally I bought my 360 used so I didn't have an original receipt. But this was not an issue either, and they sent back a refurb quickly with a free month of live.

Yeah, mine did the white screen with the message a few times before it red ringed. Never got the dirty disc error, though.

I guess I should also add, it started doing this after the Summer update, a few months back.

Before that, I rarely got disc error message at all. I had never gotten the white screen before.

I've had a few of the white screens myself, but that was at the beginning of this year with some rented games. Hasn't done it since.

Yeah, I think the DVD Drive in mine has started to bite the dust. I've seen the white screen but that is only with Guitar hero 2 and more recently it didn't read Halo 3, But it's almost been 3 weeks since that happened. I think it'll hold out until I can get an Elite.

My 1st 360 (a launch core unit) had a DVD drive where the eject motor actually died about 2 years into it's life.

I have a friend in the business who swapped it out for a used newer model ... not as new as the HDMI versions, but one manufactured post admission of guilt by Microsoft on high failure rates.

It seems to be working well to date, with no errors, however, when I exit to dashboard sometimes the discs make an AWFUL NOISE like the discs are being forceably slowed down or there's some type of breaking device (like on the slim-model PS2) but set to a much higher tension.

I know Microsoft has used various DVD drives in the life of 360 production - and I haven't noticed ANY scratches or damage on any discs or anything like that, but the noise is pretty unsettling. Is that normal??

Hell I'm only getting DRE's on Dead Rising and some loading slowdown on various games and I'm starting to get worried. I bought mine new about 8 months ago and I know it's a ticking time bomb...

mine acts up occasionally as well so I'm worried also-not what you get it just says perfectly clean new discs are dirty sometimes or makes terrible noises
