Regular Maintenance for CD Systems?

I recently bought a TurboDuo, and I've been a little put off by reading about all the problems that commonly occur with this system. It's gotten me thinking about taking steps to preserve some of my other rapidly aging systems. Stuff like the Atari 2600 essentially lasts forever as long as the contacts don't rust... but anything with moving parts like a CD drive is going to die a whole hell of a lot faster. So does anyone perform any regular maintenance on their systems?

Seems to me that it would be a good idea to open them up regularly to clean the lens and grease the rails that the lens slides on, as well as any other gears or screws that drive it... but how often should this be done? Maybe ever 5 years or so? What kind of cleaning supplies work best for this?

i just use my cd lens cleaner every once in awhile, probablly every 6 months. they all seem to work fine (Except for that stupid PS2 that just had to break.)

Never done maintenance but restorations of sorts went through a ten year old saturn recently and fixed the rails, got the dust and junk out and some other things.

Wow... no one does anything to their systems? Seems to me that this kind of work is going to be important within 5 years. This gives me an idea....

1. Buy so-called "broken" CD systems off eBay
2. Unscrew, clean, grease, lube
3. ???
4. Profit!

I have done regular maintence to my PS2 since I got it. The 6th one sold in Roanoke, VA and it is still kicking.

I tweaked the potentiometer on my Turbo DUO Laser to read about 700 or 600 ohms, i can't remember which one exactly. FMV games seem to run better that way. I don't fuck with the ones on my PS2 though...

I also wipe the CD's before i play them with a little warm water and a 100% Cotton T-Shirt. I also do the same for the laser, except with no water, and only for certain systems. I'll clean the laser for my SATURN and PSOne, but not my Turbo DUO. Also, If one of my systems is having a hard time reading a CD, I'll stop playing imediately and try to fix the problem. And also, try not to use obscure after-market controllers on an OLD PSX (first generation model). I swear, they destroy controller ports.
