This is a sister post to my "Collection Tracker" post in a way. I hadn't used the sort feature of my spreadsheet in a long time, and I have to say I was surprised how many games R5 and up that I have in my collection now. These are across all systems and games that I have, but here goes:

Rarity 10 - 0 (someday....)
Rarity 9 - 1 (Rescue Terra I, that I bought for $5 brand new in 1983 or 84)
Rarity 8 - 1 (Guardian by Apollo that I got for free from an employee of Apollo as a "demo" or freebie without box or instructions around 82-84)
Rarity 7 - 2
Rarity 6 - 5
Rarity 5 - 28!

For info purposes - I have 87 R4's.

Sorting is fun. So let's hear from you guys!

8 - 0
7 - 5ish
6 - 10+
5 - Many
... So forth

Sorry, since the ORG dropped our collections it's difficult for me to just list some or give a better estimate. Also when I record my games in my cheesy DB I don't have a column for rarity and nor do I plan to add one.

I used to own a couple R8s - Fun N Games and Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel, both for SNES. Fun N Games got traded off, and Zero was moved down to an R7 shortly after I found it.

I own four R7s:
Joshua & the Battle of Jericho (Genesis)
Hurricanes (SNES)
Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel (SNES)
True Pinball (PSX)

I own 16 R6s (1 PSX, 2 NES, 3 Genesis, 10 SNES):
Qix (NES)
TMNT Tournament Fighters (NES)
Crossfire (Genesis)
Dino Land (Genesis)
McDonald's Treasureland Adventure (Genesis)
Aero The Acro-Bat 2 (SNES)
An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (SNES)
Dino City (SNES)
F1 ROC 2: Race of Champions (SNES)
Lamborghini American Challenge (SNES)
Prehistorik Man (SNES)
Realm (SNES)
SimAnt (SNES)
Soldiers of Fortune (SNES)
The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (SNES)
Porsche Challenge (PSX)

I haven't kept good track of my collection, The rarest one I have is tank brigade for the atari 2600, But it's brand new and sealed so that puts the rarity even higher. (It's 7 normally)

Did quick search through my collection's list and matched it with the digitpress guide, heres the quick rundown:

R10 = 2
R9 = 2
R8 = 4

Counting the rest becomes a mess

R6 - Don't know the exact amount. Easily in the 50's though.

My collection looks downright pitiful in comparison to everyone else but I have:

1 - 130
2 - 68
3 - 38
4 - 18
5 - 5
6 - 2

Nothing above a 6 and both 6's are TG16 games (Neutopia II & Klax).

I probably have some R6s or something, but I don't feel like finding out which games I have that are really rare.

The rarest thing I have is Chavez II for the SNES. It's an R8.

I have one R7 game - Guilty Gear for the Playstation. I got that complete for $5.39 from EBGames in 2006.

Beyond that, I have a few R5's and the rest are R4 and below.

For the lesser rare ones, I have:

Rarity 3 - exactly 150
Rarity 2 - 275
Rarity 1 - 224 (that's odd to have less 1's than 2's?)

Of course, this does not include any of my Mega Drive, Wonderswan, Gamexube, Xbox, or 360 games, as they don't appear in the rarity base really, except as 0's.

since i sold my copy of pepsi invaders I'm down to a couple 8s and several 7s and 6s mostly for the nes but like 3 of those for the 2600, but i have a small 500+ cart collection so I think it makes up for it.

The only even remotely rare games I have are PAL Vectrex ones, 2 R7s and an R8 (Starship). I've got a handful of 5s, maybe a dozen 4s and an absolute shedloads of 1-3. I got for quantity, not quality. :-/

I know I have Super Turrican II - just the loose cart; want to pick up Rendering Ranger someday, as well.

Other than that, so much of my stuff is imported or PC games these days that I can't really guess at rarity anymore. It's mainly dollar value, now. Some recent finds: R-Type and Sol-Feace for X68000, and some pretty high-demand classic PC games (System Shock, Eric the Unready, Starflight II, and Ultimate Sci-Fi collection - a box with Blade Runner, Dune 2000, and Wing Commander: Prophecy, to name a few). I noted in the finds thread that I got a spare Nomad today, though.

Eh, you know this is a collectors site. Having an R8-10 means one of three things:
1) You have money to dish out or a keen eye online possibly over eBay.
2) You've been around this beast for awhile and eventually found them.
3) You're one lucky son of a gun and live in a goldmine town!

Infortunetly for me I haven't found too many rare artifacts of the gaming world but there are so many stores here I get lucky to find R7's and lots of commons/uncommons to choose from.

I live in a very bad area for collecting games. There are Gamestops everywhere, but they don't go back any farther than the Gamecube. Console Game Exchange (CGX) has a couple of locations in malls, but they have very high prices on most of their stuff, including all common 2600 carts starting at $6.99 each (yikes). The small video shop, game store, or collector store have all gone away to make room for more Starbucks and Walmarts. So, I get all of my stuff from a very few thrift shops, Craigslist, and ebay.

I've gotten many of my rare carts in huge Atari lots, where I'm buying 60 games and another console just to add maybe 15-20 games to my collection. The rest are waiting to be sold or traded away. I have gotten some nice doubles that way, including Pooyan, Popeye, Pete Rose Baseball, Karate, and others that I will hopefully be able to use to fill in holes in the collection someday.

There are a TON of rares on ebay, but most are priced accordingly. Finding the diamond in the rough is getting tougher and tougher.

I tend to only hold on to stuff for a short time. Right now my rarest game is Crows the battle action for saturn (R8) aside from that I've owned a few R7s and R6s

I dunno how many R7's and below I've got now, but the one R8 that I own I found last year at a Rhino Games out of state. I'm lucky to find anything around here anymore, rare or common.

Because I live in an inferior PAL region most of my games aren't even listed in the dp guide so I use a few reliable rarity databases to rate my games.

According to DigitPress.com

R10 = 0
R9 = 1 (SNES Burn-In Test Cartridge)
R8 = 0
R7 = 0
R6 = 2 (SMS King's Quest | Montezuma's Revenge)
R5 = 1

According to AtariAge.com

R10 = 0
R9 = 0
R8 = 0
R7 = 1 (2600 Obelix)
R6 = 1
R5 = 1

According to RetroReview.com (http://www.retroreview.com/paldatabase/Index.php)

R10 = 0
R9 = 0
R8 = 0
R7 = 2 (2600 Shark Attack | 4 Game in 1 )
R6 = 2
R5 = 5

The cheapest rare game I got would definately have to be Obelix (PAL) for the 2600. I bought in a lot of 4 cartridges on eBay for $6 about $10 posted (dunno exactly, I had postage combined with a 7800). It's an R7 according to one database and 6 on another but no rating on the digitpress guide unfortunately.

Please try this - I'm selecting Sega Master System and rarity >= 5

I get 6 pages, if I click next at the top nothing happens, If I click next at the bottom It moves me to the top of the list.

I don't see how I can be doing anything wrong :-/

I can navigate all 6 pages without a problem.

Try clearing your browser cache, try doing a force refresh (ctrl +f5), try restarting your computer, try using a different browser, and try using a different computer altogether.

Hopefully one of those works...I haven't got any other ideas.

thanks for the advice, the cache clearing and forced refresh had no effect but I upgraded my old Mozilla to the latest Firefox and it's now working fine.

Sorry for desrupting the thread abit, I'll post my collection rarity soon.

well I dunno all my totals off the top of my head, and I lost all my data when we lost the collection tracker here, but I know I have one R8... that would be Aero Fighters for the SNES... then I have almost all if not all the R7, R6, R5, R4, R3 for all the systems I collect for... so it's mostly R1 & R2 that I'm missing to have complete collections for all the systems I collect for... and I'm collecting for a total of 15 systems now... hoping to add 16 to the list..

also I really wish we had a rarity guide for our import collections... I know I have alot of imported rarities... and I definitely plan to buy many more...

yup. may i ask in reference to what? is it for a collecting checklist? smspower is pretty good for that as they have an excellent scans section.

i just found with the rarity list most (not all) Tec Toy games seemed to be a 5, and Korean were all 7, might be better to put a '?' if your not sure. Then US Mickey Mouse is surly not a 7! maybe a 5 or 6 maximum. I see you have a thread/ section for comments on the rarity guide so if I get some time I'll try and help out (on SMS stuff at least) :)

Since my last posting I found 2 more R7's:
Spider-Man: Web of Fire (32x L)
No Remorse (SNES CIB)

And I've found a few other R7's this year and I'm still looking forward to my first R8. I hope it's a good rare game. LOL

Heh, didn't know you were posting over here now.
The Euro ratings are based on the same raw data that sega8bit use - 30,000+ items logged from eBay around 4 years ago by myself & the long-departed Sim. Ratings between the two sites vary, as DP uses different criteria and works across all formats.
They've been constantly tweaked since then to adjust for discrepancies, though as ever it's just a guideline.

The US side is Raccoon Lad's work, though I've help tweak those a little too. Coulda sworn I'd knocked Castle of Illusion down to 5 or 6 though (the current online database might be not have been updated from the last time I submitted the file to Joe in September).

Things get much more complicated when you're comparing games from different regions though, especially those like Brazilian, Japanese & Korean releases with limited availability to most US/European based collectors. The Brazilian ratings are very much a rough guideline, especially the non-exclusives - most are rated 5, with some varying between 4-6 to indicate those that are more common/less common. The Korean games all got rated 7 because they have extremely limited availability to Western collectors, and by DP's criteria 7 = "rare". In honesty, these don't really match up with the US/Euro 7's, but I couldn't think of a better way to do it.
They were all previously rated "0" because of insufficient data, but people would complain about that too, so I figured that a very rough guideline was better than nothing.

All input is welcome though, so feel free to tear my reasoning to shreds ;)

I believe my rarest ones are two R7s - Guilty Gear & X-Com: UFO Defense for PS1.

I might have more, but I just don't know. I have bunches of old PC and Apple ][ games, some of which are probably a lot rarer than those. I just don't think about gaming this way - I hear about games that I like and want to play, and I go out and get them if I think the price is worth it. The only time I've ever really ponied up for a game was ~ $100 for Valkyrie Profile for the PS1. "Rarity" is never a factor for me in terms of whether or not I want to purchase a game - it's all about whether or not I want to play it, and whether or not I think it's going to be an experience that's rewarding enough to make it worth paying for based on current market value.

Now you have explained it i can see your reasoning - it's a difficult thing to please everyone, and everyone will have slightly different ideas on each game depending how offten they have come into contact with them.

The only one that jumped out as being way off was Castle of illuison, I can accept Korean all being a 7 as theres too few in circulation to get a handle on it - in the west at least.

A few of the Tec Toy games I felt could have moved one place in either direction but we never did get round to monitering Mercado Livre.. i actually still have the spreadsheet you sent me.. it's on a very long list of things to do :hmm: if I get round to it this year (i hope I do) i'l drop off my findings with you and somone at sega8bit so we can have somthing more deffinate on Tec toy.
