Geriatric neck-snapping spy news now, with Konami of Japan announcing a delay in Solid Snake's arrival on the PlayStation 3. The press release (http://www.konami.jp/topics/2007/1031_1/index-e.html) coldly increments the previously expected Q1 (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/konami-expects-metal-gear-solid-4-by-march-08/) release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mgs4) to Q2 2008, sparing little thought as to the taste of bitter tears and follicle-wrenching pain we had to endure whilst reading it. There's some consolation to be found in the assurance that the delay will allow "further improvements to the quality of the game and provide even greater enjoyment for more customers worldwide."

Konami further promises that pushing Metal Gear Solid 4 into the April-June arrival window will ensure it "meets everyone's expectations." We certainly hope so, as our expectations have been sitting at the airport with nothing to do for years now but read interviews with Ryan Payton (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/22/joystiq-interview-mgs4s-ryan-payton/).

Not surprised, don't care.

Take all the time you need, fellas. Make this one as good as possible.

With all the A-list titles getting delayed, it makes me wonder why they even set these arbitrary street dates in the first place. Publishers should just narrow it down to a quarter and pick a specific street date a week or so before it goes gold. Internally, a developer could have a target deadline, but why go public with it?

I've always like Bungie's motto regarding Halo 3's release date, "when it's done". Realistically though, how many develpers have that much freedom?

Sux for the MGS fans, but its better to get the game fixed and polished instead of releasing it early.

10 bucks says it's because a 360 release is in store.

I'd rather see companies push big titles like this back if they need to make it better. Look at all the other rushed to market titles we've seen over the years. Why hype something up if its going to be rushed. All game companies should take their time when releasing any game. Could you imagine how much better video gaming as a whole would be if companies didn't force thier employees to rush thier releases out into retail? More than half the games we play today, I bet, don't even have half the content and ideas they were originally intended to have. Although these games may still be great fun, just imagine what they would be if they didn't have "Mr. Game Company President" going, "if we don't hurry up and finish detailing the bad guys on level 14, you're all FIRED."

You may have something there. From the press release...

"Konami has decided to delay the title's release in order to make further improvements to the quality of the game and provide even greater enjoyment for more customers worldwide."

Hmmm.
