They work in the fat version but you need a slide card as seen here,

I believe there was a top cover that replaces the ps2 fat that had a lid. I believe with the ps2 fat daddy there is a disc that load games on the the hard drive that was the better way to go.
That is one of the reasons the slims came out so fast.
