I'm wondering which series best rewards the player that employs special moves and techniques rather than random button mashing?

Personally, I'd think Guilty Gear or Virtua Fighter.

Button Mashing is easy in Guilty Gear.

I recommend Fist of the North Star on JP ps2. Also, Samurai Showdown 6 is pretty good too.

Any of the Street Fighter series games.

As deep as VF is, novices can button mash and win vs other novices, but there is more technique in that game if you really dig deep. Guilty Gear has tons of technique, but is very scrub friendly at first as well.

Nobody noticed that he asked about 2-d games? VF isn't a 2d game.

If you play the Genesis version it is!

The Last Blade 1 or 2, The samurai showdown games, the king of fighters (just pick a year),Melty Blood act cadenza, Are All games that discourage button mashing.

The Best out of this list would be Samurai Showdown 2.

It's funny but I would have cited the Guilty Gear series as one of the guiltiest button mashers.

From what I've observed at my store's cabinets, any King of Fighters game favors people who know how to play vs. those who just jam buttons. To a lesser degree, the Marvel vs. Capcom machine, though I've seen mashers win every so often.

I normally would disagree with you but thats probably becuase I am a heavy Guilty Gear player. The series is more about reaction IMO so it seems, at a glance, like mashing.

My vote probably would go to Fatal Fury: Mark of The Wolves.

If you like imports I'd say Spectral Vs. Generations.

Well, let me explain.

Button mashing won't get you very far at all in GG. You may be able to beat a small amount of people if you can get a decent idea of dodging and blocking (not to mention cancels and such), but you'll get your ass handed to you effortlessly by someone who knows what their doing.

I didn't even think of KoF though...

Apollo: It's like that with every game, though. Guilty Gear still has the "random" factor to it, though. Random Sol, random Gatling Combos with everyone, you can do that with every character, and yes, expert player will know how to avoid it (like with every game), but you can get stuck being surprised by wildness.

King of Fighters you can dumb down to just beating people with two buttons, but the gameplay is really basic.

Complex motions and gameplay on 2D games will be the KOF and Street Fighter series, though. Guilty Gear has a lot of air memorization and Off the ground combos.and I have seen people good at that game with no distancing capabilities in Street Fighter.....

I would have to agree with the King of Fighters assessment. You're really gonna get you ass handed to you if you try mashing on that one. You just end up being wholly ineffective.

I'm pretty sure this applies in every fighting game. Does button mashing ever beat a good player? Nope.
