So I've played through SMB1 and 3 again recently, and I thought this would be an interesting thread idea. So, pick a favorite and least favorite level for SMB 1-3 and World (and SMB 2 Japan/The Lost Levels). Here's my picks:

Super Mario Bros. - Favorite would be 4-2. Here, you've got to decide whether you want to take the vine to warp to Worlds 6, 7, and 8, go all the way to the end of the level and warp to World 5, or just go on to level 4-3. Least favorite is 7-2, especially when I'm not Fire Mario, due to the extra bloopers you didn't see in 2-2.

Super Mario Bros. 2 - Favorite would be 7-1. On the SNES version, sometimes I'd start in that level and just fool around, trying to blow up all the rock platforms. Least favorite is 6-2. Not much to see there.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) aka The Lost Levels - Favorite? That's a tough one, but I think I'm going to go with World 9-1. The first time I beat level 8-4 on the SNES version, I used warps, so I went to World A-1. Then I finally beat 8-4 without warping and this was quite the nice surprise. Least favorite is D-2, mainly because of the tough jump at the beginning of the level. It always robs me of some lives before I finally make it.

Super Mario Bros. 3 - Favorite is 7-9. The pipe maze rocks. Least favorite is 7-7, which requires you to use the looping star trick to run through the munchers to the end of the level. Since you can just beat 7-8 to advance, I usually skip this one.

Super Mario World - Favorite? Another tough one. I'll go with Chocolate Island 2. The concept is that the path you take in this level differs depending on the number of coins and the time it takes you to get to the next pipe. Least favorite is Outrageous (the forest level in the Special World).

Well, it's an impossible question for me since I love every inch of all of the 2d Marios...lol. ;)

Honestly I can't pin down individual levels for the later games because I thought each world had its own identity.

Super Mario Bros.

Favorite: I liked all of the water levels (such as 2-2 & 7-2) and the levels that take place at night (including 6-1 and 6-2). If I have to do a tiebreaker, I'll go with the water levels. I love the water stages, especially the music, though I think 6-2 has an underground pipe that lets you swim through part of the level :)

Least Favorite: World 7-4. When I haven't played this game for months to a time, which is often the case, I always forget the proper route and lose at least one life due to running out of time.

Super Mario Bros. 2

Favorite: Call me crazy but my favorite is the very first level. It gives you a little bit of nearly everything the game has to offer, like jumping a waterfall and blowing up a wall to take a shortcut or going the long way and climbing up the vine.

Least Favorite: Hated the desert stages. All of em'. Didn't like the ice stages either. Lastly I wasn't a member of the "flying carpet cult" but I did love riding the albatrosses to victory :) Those were fun stages.

Super Mario Bros. 3

Favorite: The entire "giant" world (World 4).

Least Favorite: I found a lot of the stages in Bowser's world, both the tank stages and regular stages, to be a little boring (not necessarily difficult). Inside of his castle, though, was a pretty little work of art.

Super Mario World

Favorite: I love the theme music and the stages in the Forest of Illusion. An awesome collection of levels. Otherwise I like the stage that appears in the demo (I think it is somewhere in the Star World?) but that is primarily for nostalgia reasons. Whenever I used to visit Walmart or Toys R Us, in the months before I owned an SNES, I used to watch it on the kiosks like a trained chimpanzee.

Least Favorite: That frickin' Star World stage where you had to grab one P-Balloon after another........which led to one thrown controller after another.
