View Full Version : N64 Worth It?

I've been contimplating buying a cheap used N64 so I can play a few games I missed out on (Conkers Bad Fur Day, Mario 64, Castlevania 64, F-Zero X, LoZ: Majoras Mask). I was wondering if its actually worth it though. Beyond the games I listed I can't think of any worth playing. Does anyone have a list of N64 EXCLUSIVES that are worth playing? I know alot of titles were ported to the PSX so I'd probably pick any of those up for that system.

Oh wait I forgot the best reason to own a N64: Quest 64! :puke:

Rogue Squadron is fun and was console-exclusive to N64 (although a PC version was also released).

Let's face it, Matt. If you're thinking about getting one now, you're gonna own one someday so why not just get it over with?

I've got one but if it weren't for my Z64 I'd never use it.

And just for you...

What is a z64?

What is a z64?

It's a gizmo that sits in the top of the N64, you put your cart into it and it backs the game up onto a ZIP disk. A ZIP disk holds about 6 games so having this bad boy around means I don't have to keep piles of game cartridges around, just a nice little box of disks. You can also use it to program cheats into the games. Fabbo all-in-one unit, IMHO.

Where can you find a Z64? What kind of price are they?

That little device sounds really cool.

That device sounds seriously cool. Like a suped up floppy drive unit for the SNES...

Kind of sounds like the Japan only 64DD add-on.

I'm sort of sitting on the fence like you are right now concerning a N64, Tempest, but you have a 32X too, right? Unless you collect for that one out of completing the library, I justified having just a few carts for that system, too.

What's holding me back is the fact that those darn carts can still be so expensive.

Blast Corps is another N64 exclusive that's a bl... er, is mucho fun.

You all gotta get down offa that fence. Having a system and only a few games for it doesn't make you "uncool". Nobody's gonna come over and do that Nelson "HA HA" at you. After a year of ownership, I think I have about six N64 carts. Just pick up a Conker's BFD (the "Combat" of the N64) for $7-$10 (or Perfect Dark, the "Air-Sea Battle") and get going!

Yes, definetely get an N64, especially if by chance you like Racing/Driving games, this is by far my favorite(IMO the best) system for Racing games, due to the choice selection. Lets see here:

-San Fransisco Rush
-Rush 2 Extreme Racing USA---EXCLUSIVE!
-San Fransisco Rush 2049....I should just stop here because these three games alone grant the N64 a worthy investment. SFR:2049 is absolutely amazing on the N64, but from what I can tell it is getting hard to find.

-Mario Party 1,2,3 ---EXCLUSIVES!!!! You wanted to know the sweet exclusives...here they are, the future classic party games..all 3 are great, even by yourself.

-Blast Corps--EXLUSIVE!!...almost a launch title..very original. Finally a game where I get to use my Tonka Trucks to do mass destruction.

-F-1 World Gran Prix 1,2...sweet in your face open wheel racing simulation games.

-Ogre Battle 64---EXCLUSIVE!
-Body Harvest--EXCLUSIVE!...great game in the style of Grand Theft Auto. In fact I think I read somewhere on these boards that some of the game designers of Body Harvest went on to program for GTA III...anyone got the details? Anyway, this game is hard but I love it because you get to drive alot of military vehicles/tanks from different time periods, using them to blast Alien Bugs.. Not the best graphics though, but I got over it.

Well, thats just a touch of the great games that I've played on the N64. It doesn't have the massive amount of games that the PS1 has, but I've found that your chances of picking up a stinker are far less thanks to Nintendos strict Quality over Quantity philosophy they held onto during the life of the 64. Not saying there aren't stinkers, because there always are, I'm just saying percentage wise, there are more quality games on the N64 than PS.

You mentioned wanting to play Majora, so remember it requires the memory expansion.

Paper Mario, Fzero X, and Turok: The Dinosaur Hunter are three exclusives worth having. I personally would choose the N64 over the PSX any day.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Smash Bros yet! Great party game, and really not too far behind in gameplay as compared to the Cube sequel.

I can certainly understand being on the fence with the 64.. I am too. It just seems like a pretty significant investment for a system that I really only want 5-10 games for, even though those 5-10 would probably be a blast.

You can get a system for under $20 easy so you should get one even though I think it's a crap system. Even if you never play it you can say you have one more console that you didn't have before.

Who is compiling the N64 game list for the site? I have almost all the releases (281 plus 5 demo carts) with the product number, UPC code, and cartridge color in a spreadsheet that I can send to help update the section.

I'd get one. I have one. While I do not play it all too often now, there are several good games for it. You can pick one up cheap. It's a good idea to get it since there are several games you are interested in

Yeah I bit the bullet and bought one. Last night I picked up Conker and Perfect Dark for $10 (gotta have them) and Paper Mario for $20. They had a few other games like Megaman 64, but they were still full price!

I own an N64 for two games:

Ogre Battle 64
Sin and Punishment

The only others I really play on it are Dr. Mario 64, Pokemon Puzzle League, and the Castlevanias. It's not one of my favorite systems but there are a few reasons for most serious gamers to own it.

Yoshi M (Dan Mahlendorf) is the editor of the N64 section. You can send it along to him at yoshi-m@charter.net or to me at digitalpress@email.com and I'll see that he gets it - I'll need your name for the credits as well. Sounds cool. Thanks!
