I'm playing the first Ninja Gaiden on the NES. It seems that I can always get to the middle of stage 4-1 and the NES shuts off. I'm playing with a crappy AC Adaptor. Anyway to fix this, or do I need a new one?

If it happens everytime when you get to the same spot, it's probably your cartridge.
Even though those things are hardy as hell, NES carts have been known to die once in a while.

Try using a confirmed quality working AC adapter before moving on to other possible issues.

I think your AC Adapter is getting a full on energy blast from a solar flare.
Or you just need a new one.
