WOW.
I've got a whole new appreciation for this thing now. I bought a GP32 nearly a year ago and was bored to death by the games that were released for it; it's been primarily a handheld MP3 player for me to date.
But after hearing that there's an Atari 2600 emulator coming out for it, I decided to check out the emulation site www.gp32emu.com.
I found out that there is already a very established Master System emulator, a TurboGrafx emulator, a NES emulator, and lots of other stuff either "playable" or very much in the works.
My first go was with the Master System emulator "SMS32".

Wow.
So I'm going to be playing the original Phantasy Star on this thing for awhile, and will be on the lookout for the completion of the Atari 2600 emulator, which is really exciting (other than VCSp, you can't play a handheld 2600 game).
Anyone else have a GP32? anything you can recommend?
O_O
WOW, that's awesome! I, myself, don't have a GP32 because I thought that I would never be able to find any games/software for it.
What is the emulation like? Does it run at full speed, or is the frame rate slow and choppy? What about the sound, is that emulated well?
I might have to look into this GP32....

So far... I've only been playing with the NES and SMS emulators for now. The SMS one is very good, full speed and good sound. The NES... hit and miss. I don't think it supports sound at all (at least hasn't in the dozen or so ROMS I've tried) but it runs full speed.

Yeah! You register your GP32 online (weird, eh?) when it's connected to your PC's USB port. Then you download the drivers and PC link software. The software gets all the folders set up for you (you format the smart media card to prep it, like a hard drive), then from the website above find the emulators you like. The executables go into one of the pre-created folder. The ROMS you copy right from your PC to a subdirectory, and BAM you're ready to go. It's pretty slick, only took me about 10 minutes to set up.

I don't get all the fascination with the GP32 over the past few months. What exactly makes it so great compared to a PocketPC device? A 400 mHz XScale Dell Axim can usually be found for $250, not a terrible amount more than a GP32. I've been playing MAME, 2600, Apple II, and SNES games on my old Cassiopeia for several years. While the GP32 does have controls better suited to gaming, I don't get the fuss about it when it isn't doing anything that hasn't been done by not that much more expensive PDAs for years.

You're absolutely correct, sir! It really is just a scaled-down pocket PC. I have a Cassiopeia as well (though the OS version can no longer be upgraded so I can't get everything).
I don't have an answer to your question though. I like ANYTHING that plays games. I mentioned this because it's a gaming forum and figured people would enjoy hearing about emulation on a handheld game system.
