View Full Version : Should the Nintendo DS have had a higher resolution display?

It's a great system, but when playing I can't help but think that it would have benefited from a screen with a bit higher resolution. Even on games like the Konami Classics-Arcade Hits, there is some loss of resolution as compared to the original games that this DS compilation is based on.

Would it have been possible to manufacture the unit to a higher resolution and still keep the cost reasonable?

Yes, yes it should.

It should, but can you imagine all the bitching existing DS owners would do, having to buy a third revision of their console?

I agree! That is the only complaint I have about the DS.

I also thought the same thing back in the day about the Atari Lynx. It had some incredible scaling and rotation effects but due to the low resolution everything was big and chunky and could get confusing at times.

It would be nice, but wouldn't it screw up all of the games they currently have that require the touch screen and are written for the lower resolution?

I think the system is good the way it is now. Higher resolution would have been better, I agree. When the DS first came out though, I think 2 high res screens, along with one of them being a touch screen would have made it cost more than the PSP when it first came out. That also leaves the door open to them for thier next portable system. Maybe more like what Gameboy color was to the original gameboy. Updated graphics, could play the older games and the newer ones meant for GB color. Make something like a DS Plus or something like that in a couple years that still plays the older DS games but also has a whole new library of high res DS games. If that came out any time soon, I'm sure there would be angry people who just bought a DS lite, but give the DS light a couple more years and then get some of those new games for a new system pumping out. I'd buy a new hi-res DS that has a new library in a couple years without any regrets about buying a DS Lite, because most likely the new portable system they make won't be backwards compatible with GBA games.

Considering how amazingly well it's sold, it's hard for me to say they "should" have done anything differently at all. But personally I'd like to have had a slightly bigger screen. The resolution is fine, but a bigger screen would be easier on my tired, old eyes.

I'd be happy with top-screen tv out, a la the new psp.
