Newly acquired Nintendo Vs. Dualsystem.

I'm new to the arcade scene and I just got myself a nice Vs. Red tent sitdown about a month ago. I've already started replacing the games that came with it and I have a question. I noticed a battery compartment on the actual board and was wondering if this is used for high scores. I replaced the battery and still my excitebike does not save its high scores after shutdown. Does anyone know if saving only works for some games? Im not too clear on this, because I really want to challenge my high scores.

The connecting wires are probably corroded.. My SMB does the same thing - scores and initials wont save. supposedly it's easy to replace, I just haven't bothered yet.

And yes - The battery save feature should work on all the Vs. games.

Do you know if there is a link to where I can find instructions on how to fix this problem, or does anyone know how? I would like to resolve this, but I can't find anything on how to do it. Any help appreciated.
