I prefer this version of Othello - sleeps snugly on any console!

But seriously, folks, wasn't there also an Intellivision version, or am I thinking Reversi?

I think there is an Othello cart game for TI-99/4A computer. I've seen a few versions for C64 but they all were on tape or disk, no cart. (Spite and Malice were probably the best of any Othello game for C64)

Isn't Dynasty on the O2 the same as Othello/Reversi?

And surely the Othello Multivision by Tsukuda had an Othello cartridge?

othello world (super famicom)- probably the best home version (next to the actual board game). like many japanese board/puzzle game conversions, the developer went the extra mile by adding a story mode; here, you can play against characters like pinocchio, the cheshire cat, the 7 dwarves, red riding hood and cinderella. weird, but it works for me... :D

Everybody knows the best version of Othello is the original. Right now your daughter and the Moor are making "the beast with two backs." Ha! Shakespeare sure knew his lowbrow humor.

As far as games go, I'm not a real fan of Othello the game. How about Go? Now there's a great game. I'm still skeptical of the "deeper than Chess" claim, but it's one of those games everyone should know. I was actually writing about this on my website, BTW.

Now that I think about it, since someone mentioned Dynasty! for the Odyssey 2, I think that was Go!, not Othello/Reversi.

I was pretty sure it was Othello, but even if not, it's most likely Go Moku, not Go -- Go is a much larger game in terms of both board size, number of playing pieces, and complexity.

Dan: I remember playing a game of Go with a friend and being unsure how certain formations were counted. The instructions we had weren't very clear...

Geelw: Super Fami -- I should have remembered that system! I don't think I have Othello World, but I know I have some Othello game for it.

Can anybody post any pic of these versions of Othello please?

I have a copy of Othello for the Lynx. It even supports Comlynxed networked play with another Lynx, without requiring another Othello cartridge! http://www.provide.net/~hdodgson/oth/othello.html

A 'flash-like' cart was developed for the Lynx, called the LGSS, that allows compatible games to use it as a duplicate cartridge, allowing networked play with only one actual game cartridge. I have no idea if other games have since been released that work with it, but I haven't heard of any.

I just played Dynasty for the first time today--got it at Philly--and it plays just like Othello. Too bad there's only one skill level and it's not challenging.

I'm not familar with Go. I bought the game hoping to learn how to play Go. Didn't know that it was basically Othello. Oh well.

Othello is exactly the same game than Go. Go is an antique chinese board game. But Othello is better :P

I am pretty sure that Go and Othello are quite different games. It's been years since I have played Othello, buth the depth of strategy in Go is quite unbelievable. It is one of the few games that a computer has difficulty in beating any good human opponent without a handicap.

For more info see:

Go is not very popular in North America, and it gets a bad rap. It's quite an amazing strategy game.. it just hurts my head. :(

Then what you know as Go is certainly NOT the same as the traditional Chinese game of Go. I've played both and they're VERY different:

- in Go the pieces are solid colors, in Othello the pieces have two colors one on each side

- in Go the board is played on an 18x18 grid on the intersections (total of 361 pieces could be played though the game can end before this), in Othello the board is played on an 8x8 grid on the squares (total of 64 pieces must be played to finish a game)

- in Go pieces are removed if engulfed, in Othello pieces never leave the board

- in Go newly placed pieces (may) effect removal of other pieces, in Othello newly placed pieces (may) effect the color (flip) of other pieces

Glad to hear I was right about Dynasty... At least my memory is totally vanishing yet...

Othello is similar to Go, but it clearly is a different beast altogether. Go is more about controlling territory than capturing pieces. It's a pretty easy game to grasp (build fences), but there's an enourmous amount of strategies and tactics.

I wrote a review of this great Go game for the GBA in Japan. It sparked my interest in the game, which of course led me to learning the game and playing at Yahoo Games online. Here's the link for ya:

Does that Gameboy game not use a full-size board then, or is the 12x12 one in the fullsize pic (looks even smaller on the pics in your review page) shown an optional one?
