(NASDAQIVX) today announced that DivX(R) video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the ecosystem of devices that currently support DivX video playback. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified(R) products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number.

"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

Products that bear the DivX Certified logo have undergone a rigorous testing program to ensure a high-quality DivX media experience that includes reliable video playback and excellent visual quality. DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date. PS3 game title developers will be able to utilize DivX's decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3's Software Development Kit to version 2.00, which was released by SCE on November 2nd.

This is awesome. I have a ton of backed up TV shows. If I could use the PS3's upconversion with them they might be equivalent to the DVD versions.

Wow, that's insane. I know with the 2.0 firmware that the divx movies were showing up on the playlist (but were still unplayable) so it was hinting towards something like this...but still.. that's pretty awesome.

Ultimately it won't be that useful to myself or plenty of other people that don't really use Divx much, but I love how committed Sony seems to be in trying to extend the home theater portion of the PS3 while they wait for the games to fall into place (especially since the 1.80 firmware update that added a high quality upscaler).

Now if only they'd improve playlist control/XMB item sorting (the options for sorting media and games are pretty limited right now) and update the browser out of the stone age...

Its not confirmed that XviD movies will be playable, but i would guess so. I dont know if you can run the DivX/XviD movies directly from a disc, but atleast you can directly from the harddrive :)

I read that the DivX people are talking with Microsoft about including DivX on 360. Now that PS3 supports it maybe 360 will follow.

Ok, I didn't stop to think about this before posting. Disregard everything I said about it most likely not being useful to me and pardon me while I download everything posted to alt.binaries.multimedia.erotica.* for the next 24 hours in preparation for this update.

It's not like you couldn't watch divx movies on PS3 before, but it'll be nice not needing to boot into linux and run VLC to do so.
