A French developer is releasing Bloodbowl, one of the tabletop games from Gamesworkshop, for the PC and 360 sometime in 08. If you don't know, Gamesworkshop are the creators of the Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 brands that were pretty much ripped off, at least in style, by Blizzard for their Warcraft titles.
For Bloodbowl, think Warhammer on the football field. It's very tongue-in-cheek and violent. Corruption and cheating are just as important following the rules. All kinds of races have their own teams, which are bolstered by hero players with special skills. The tabletop game is turn based and very tactical, but I doubt they'll keep it that way for the console version.
If you have fond memories of Mutant League Football, this might be a title to watch. Could be great, but it's also the sort of thing that could easily end up sucking.

I used to love playing the table top game, so I'm pretty jazzed about this. The DOS game released back in '95 was some good fun back then and I'm completely amped for this sucker.

One of my immortal gaming moments occurred with that old DOS game. I recall that it had a lot of potential, but was shoddily thrown together. I don't think there were even enough teams to put one in each division of the league, neither was there any way to create a new one. But I've been waiting for another developer to take shot at it ever since. Hope this one ends up with a good single player mode.

Mutant League Football for Genesis is similar to what you've described. Released by EA, they also made a Mutant League Hockey game.

Bloodbowl is a great game. I don't really have many people to play against though. I have Skaven, Orc and Human teams with all their Star Players. I was contemplating a Lizardman team too. Plus, I'd rather stick to painting the actual models.

Then chances are you'll like Blood Bowl. The original game predated M(i?)LF by something like 5 years, but it was the third revision (which I think came out a year after M(i?)LF) where it really came together and turned into a badass game.
Checked wikipedia and apparently Revision 4 sucked while the new open ruleset rocks something fierce... I'd get back into it if I could find people to play against locally. That and Games Workshop's pricing on figures is kind of batshit insane.
I keep hoping that Man O' War gets revived in video game format at some point, too. It was always one of my favorite boxed GW games (alongside Space Hulk + Tyranid Attack, Blood Bowl, and Epic 2nd Edition). God damn shame it never caught on (even locally amongst the Games Workshop fanboys).
You know? A Space Marine + Tyranid Attack game would be hella cool, too.
tl;dr - Buying dis game.

I can't wait to see some vids of this one. It's definitely on my radar now.

Was there not a game for the PC that was like Bloodbowl? I think it was released overseas. IT was a 3D live action type game.
