Hey gang,
Well, I'm thinking of arranging a little field trip for the memebers here and I need a headcount of those who might be willing to come.
I'm in Ohio, home of Cedar Point (www.cedarpoint.com) - The "Roller Coast." This legendary amusement park has more coasters than anyplace else on earth as well as several world-record breaking rides. The Magnum XL-200 was the first coaster in the world to break the 200 ft. mark. Then the Millennium Force was the first to break the 300 ft. mark. And now, this year, the new Top Thrill Dragster (http://www.topthrilldragster.com/public/inside_park/rides/thrill/ttd/) will be the first to break 400 ft, will reach speeds of 120 MPH, and has a drop of - get this - 90 degrees. Straight. Freakin'. Down.
So, I thought sometime in September, it'd be a hoot to have a bunch of us descend on the park for a DP Day Out. There is more than just the thrill rides, of course. Lots to see, do , and play. Oh, and did I mention the Cedar Point Midway Arcade? Home to hundreds of classic video games still in pristine working condition.
So, that's what I'd like to arrange and that's what I'm asking. I want to find out how many folks would be interested in showing up for a day to ride and play. Please do not vote as a "Yes" if realistically you know there's no way you'll be able to make it.
Well, get to voting. I'll announce more concrete details (dates, times, directions, other fun things going on) as the summer progresses.

I'm sure I could make it. I'll be heading up to Cedar Point in two weeks' time, so I should know the route.
And I am intrigued by the mention of this "classic" arcade. Might it have early-90s coin-ops as well as stuff from the Pac-Man era?
bargora
04-16-2003, 03:47 PM
From my recollection visiting there last summer, the arcade is really skewed to 80s, even early 80s stuff. You can play Space Invaders or Red Baron if you like. It seemed like there was a lot of duplication there, cutting down on the variety (and probably easing maintenance).
Oh, yeah. I think there was a Tekken machine there.
There are a few moderns, like those big-ass Star Wars sit-down machines. My cousin and I had a lot of fun with the "MTV Drum Simulator", which I guess is an americanized DrumMania.

Fenris, if you're heading to CP, give us a quick report when you return. The two things I want to know is:
1. Status of the CP Arcade right there on the Midway. You really can't miss it. I think (don't quote me) there's a Snoopy gift shop right next to it - in case you can't find it. Report on condition and number of machines within and approximate era. (Most were mid-late 80s last time I was there). Just do a walkthrough and glance about if you're near it.
2. Second, I want a first hand account of Top Thrill Dragster. Even if you don't climb aboard, I want to know if it's as awesome in person as the clips on-line make it out to be.
You have your orders, soldier.
Kid Fenris
04-16-2003, 04:30 PM
I hope that the arcade's actually open when I head up there. I'm going for "media day," and the last time I attended such an event at an amusement park (King's Island), everything was closed except for the two central attractions.
The second order should be easy to fill, though, since CP is specifically inviting everyone there to ride the Top Thrill.

Media Day?!? Dammit. I was entertainment reporter for the Mansfield News Journal for 7 years, and I NEVER got a media day pass for any of CP's rides. Screw 'em then. LOL

HELL YEAH I'm in!!!! I go to Cedar Point every year usually in September btw. Great idea. The Arcade has a good mix of new and old and yeah that MTV Drum Machine was a blast.
can't wait to ride the Top Thrill Dragster!
the Millennium Force is a rush but the Magnum still rules all.

Well, I went to Cedar Point’s “Media Day” last week, and I almost don’t want to talk about it.
To put things in perspective, the drive up to CP from Dayton took three hours. Looking back, it was probably the most enjoyable part of the trip.
Upon arriving at the park, my co-workers and I discovered that, as we had expected, everything was closed except for the Top Thrill Dragster and the Coasters restaurant. After getting some rather nasty burgers and shakes at the eatery, we headed for the Dragster and found ourselves at the end of a line of about 150 people.
So we waited, watching the Dragster car make its way up and down the enourmous arc. Though the ride lasts for about 15 seconds, they sent roughly one twelve-person car over it every twenty minutes. Still we waited, getting sunburns and drawing slowly closer to the front of the line. All the while, other rides in the park were being tested, their empty carts and seats mocking us as we anticipated our turn on the Top Thrill Dragster.
And then it happened. One of the cars didn’t make it over the Dragster’s arc. It barely reached the halfway point of its journey up before it slid back down the track to its starting point. We were actually expecting this, as a sign next to the ride stated something to the effect of “Occasionally, a car will not reach the top of the arc. It will then slowly return to its original position. This is normal.”
Apparently, this wasn’t normal to the people running the ride, as they stopped it and refused to send any cars up. The hours went by, we kept waiting, and eventually it clouded up and started raining. It was then that my boss got sick of the wait and decided to leave. So we left.
And thus I didn’t get to visit the arcade or even ride the dragster. I did, however, get a commemorative coin that identifies me as an “inaugural rider” of the Dragster. This is, of course, a complete lie, because I never rode the damn thing.
Anyway, the Top Thrill Dragster seemed like a blast, judging by the screams of everyone who came down it. But it’s a pretty short ride, and I’ve got to wonder how long you would wait for it on a typical day.
I’d still like to head back up to the park for a DP get-together, but I think I might skip the Dragster.

I am absolutely petrified of roller caosters, but hey, if a group outing's afoot, I'm game. When I used to go to King's Island here in Cincy, I spent all of my time at the arcades. That might be fitting when going to the park with a group of folks from a VIDEO GAMING board.
As long as I know a few weeks in advance, I can make the drive.

any dates for this trip yet? Nope, as most DP'ers are prepping for CGE in less than 30 days. However, I can tell you that DP at CP 03 *will* be discussed at CGE and a date should be finalized upon my return Aug. 12-13-ish. Best guess as of now, first or second weekend in Sept. Best I can give you as to a hard-date. Stay tuned.

OK, no news yet, as dates for this is going to be discussed at CGE. However, it looks like it's going to be either Sept. 13-14 or Sept. 20-21. One of those four days. But, until I get back from Vegas Aug. 13, a true "hammered-down" date ain't decided upon. But I can 95% guarantee you that one of those 4 days is gonna be it. And I promise you at least 3 weeks to a month advance notice.

OK gang, I'm trying to put this together quickly so everyone has enough advance notice to make arrangements. The date (tentative) for the First Annual Digital Press at Cedar Point 2003 (or "DPCP'03") will be Saturday, September 20, 2003.
The park will be open from noon to midnight, as it is the first day of Halloweekends - the annual Halloween festival. The entire park is open (rather than just the front half) and all rides - including the Top Thrill Dragster - will be operational. Plus, there are three Haunted Houses up and running, as well as the legendary Fright Zone. Here's a link with all of the details:
Halloweekends at Cedar Point (http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/inside_park/hw/index2.cfm)
General Cedar Point information (http://www.cedarpoint.com)
OK, so you have the dates and times. I'd like to get a good turnout for this, plus it's a day at a classic amusement park prior to summer's end. No real "events" to be planned at this time, but we'll make arrangements to meet in the park at a pre-determined time and place.
So, Sept. 20th it is folks. More details to come!

Ok, I'm in a slight panic, but this is still happening:
Just learned from the boss-man that there's a business meeting he wants me to attend. In Montreal, Canada. On Sept. 20. Crap. However, it's not a confirmed done-deal, so there's a chance I may dodge this bullet. However, September 20th is a LOCK-IN FOR ALL ATTENDEES. If by some chance, I can't make it, I will make arrangements for everyone who IS there to meet. So plan on being at Cedar Point on Sept. 20, even if the organizer is not. :(
Will keep you posted. Should be fun, gang!

Hey gang!
Well, we're at the three-week point, so I need a headcont as to who will be at Cedar Point on Sat., Sept. 20th. Now this is an INFORMAL little gathering of folks who were planning on going to the theme park that day. Nothing organized or planned events. Just wanted to try to get everybody together who were going to be at the park for one last summer-type huzzah.
One small hithc in plans. I've been told by the bossman that I have to attend a business meeting in Montreal - yup - on the 20th. So I will not be in attendance. But I'm still coordinating a meeting at the park for those who plan to go.
Now then, if you plan to be at Cedar Point on Spet. 20th, please e-mail me at timchrissnider@netzero.net or drop me a PM here at the DP board. I'll begin making the proper arrangements and getting the word out as to where and when DP folks will meet in the park.
So far, I only know of two absolutely confirmed attendees, so drop me a line if you're going. Like I said, this is just an informal "happy to meet ya" gettogether at the park among those who were already planning on being there. Contact me at once with your plans. Thanks again!

I wouldn't be able to go, a bit too far out of my reach. Plus, I don't do well in rollercoasters. However, reading the specs of the ride came up with this gem:
Fiberglass and steel coaches with individual lap bars, interlocking seat belts and padded head restraint systems. May not accommodate Guests of Exceptional Size.

Yay! I have a new Euphemism. I'm a "Guest of Exceptional Size"!

IF YOU NEED PARK INFO AND DIRECTIONS:
General Cedar Point Park Info (http://www.cedarpoint.com/)
Halloweekends at Cedar Point (http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/inside_park/hw/index2.cfm)
PLAN OF ATTACK:
OK, I’d like for all DP members to meet at the Space Spiral tower near the front gates at 1 p.m. This will give those familiar with the park an hour to poke around the front and gives stragglers a chance to get through the gates. I ask that some of you wear something that would ID you as a DP member – a DP shirt or a videogame-related item would be nice. Once the group forms, I’m sure late-comers will be able to home in on ya!
When gathered, take a trip up the Spiral. It’s something I do first thing whenever I hit the park. It’ll give folks who are new to the Point a great overview of the entire park. Great for planning what to hit during the day. Also, the Top Thrill dragster is nearby and I bet it’d be cool to see how much taller IT is than the Spiral!
After that, take a trip to the CP Arcade on the Midway! Yup, tons of classic gaming goodness to see if you’ve never been before. Bring a camera, for I’d LOVE to get a picture of the DP gang in front of the biggest still-in-operation classic arcade in Ohio. (Get some passerby to snap the shot.)
Afterwards, the park is yours! Split up if you wish, or stay together and go for mass rideage! If you can stomach it, the Millenioum Force and Magnum XL are GREAT coasters. No opinion on Top Thrill Dragster, but if the line is manageable, GO FOR IT! Other great rides include the Raptor, Mantis, and Mean Streak. If, however, rides are not your forte, might I suggest a ride on the CP Railroad or Skybuckets? The Giant Wheel is also good for a great view of the park. Plus, there are tons of other rides, fast and slow, to ride.
This date is also the second day of Halloweekends. There will be 3 haunted attractions to go through, plus parts of the park have been “spookied up.” Feeling brave? Why don’t you visit Undertaker U. or Werewolf Canyon? Good luck!
At some point, if you separate, why not get together for a late lunch/dinner? There’s a Johnny Rockets in the park if you wish, but I always find myself drawn to the Red Garter Saloon on Frontier Trail. Grab a sandwich and a beer and watch the live show! (Plus there are other live shows to watch, including an AWESOME Imax movie screen. No idea what’s showing though!) After the sun goes down, perhaps THAT’S when you’ll want to try the Haunted Attactions you’ve missed!
That’s about it gang. I really wish I was able to be there, as I was planning on being a bit of a tour guide. Those of you who have been to CP, please give the newbies a bit of guidance as to what’s cool. Take plenty of pictures for this site too! Hopefully, this will be the first of more DPCP gatherings to come! (Someone needs to prepare to write a ‘trip report’ too!)
That’s the plan gang! Enjoy and tell us all about it when you get home!

I am completely unfamiliar with the park, it's layout, nearby places to stop at, etc. I figured the exchange could take place before/after we went inside, but with everyone arriving at different times, I dunno. I was expecting to arrive close to 12:00 or so, barring any traffic problems. What do you think?

Oobgarm and Kid Fenris are not allowed in my car. although, sadly I must admit my wife would immensely enjoy their taste in music.
Beware the Axis of Bad Taste!
I was only kidding you fool! I believe that Fenris was kidding as well.
Or were we???? @_@ x_x LOL

So nobody else is going from the Cleveland area, I guess. Well, don't mind me; I'll just be listening to my copies of Codename:Tenka and NGEN Racing on the drive from Clevo to CP! ROCKIN' VG TECHNO!
And while the best things in life are free, CP is not. To take some of the sting out of the $43 admission price, go to this page and print yourself out a coupon for $8 off of admission:

Thanks for the coupon pointer, bargora. I meant to post that myself.
Here's something though. Great site called "Theme Park Insider" rates and revierws amusement parks, rides, and restaurants on-site. Want to know what the best Cedar Point has to offer? Click me for Cedar Point ratings! (http://www.themeparkinsider.com/parks/park.cfm?Resort=Cedar%20Point&Park=Cedar%20Point)
While riding stuff, keep me in mind, as I was looking forward to this day since March. Say things like "Sniderman would've loved this ride," or "Sniderman rocks at the Whack-A-Mole game," or "Sniderman would've loved to have seen the rack on that babe." I'd appreciate it. :D

"Sniderman would've loved to have seen the rack on that babe."
I'll say this one to myself so as not to make my wife aware that I've spotted a particulrly impressive rack.

Hey, since I don't have a pic up in the "Member Photos" section, I'll be the tall, thin, dark-haired guy in the navy blue Atari shirt, playing a GBA SP.
The password is "Radiant".
The countersign will be "Potato".
EDIT: After cruising through the member photos, I noticed that my Atari shirt looks the same one that yxnomei is wearing, but blue, and without what Sniderman would refer to as the "rack".

To notice me and those that I'm bringing/driving:
You'll notice us because I'll be the short little girl that's either tired of driving or really energetic dragging a big guy with no hair flanked by two skinny kids.

Someone had better be bringing a camera.
Who's our designated "journalist"? This event deserves a post-event write-up with photo gallery, like the others featured on this site.
Don't assume someone else is doing it. Who's got this one?

I would be up for such a task. I know den68 is bringing his camera, and so am I. Plus, I do enjoy me some writing.
To notice me: I'll be wearing this shirt, so hopefully no one else does: ;)

And my picture is in the photo gallery.

yup, I'm bringing a camera, so I'll post some pics of course. I'll attempt to add some word stuff too, may need some help to flower it up a bit.
I'll be wearing my DP shirt unless of course it's too hot for a black tee, then It'll be my NES Know your roots tee.

Two skinny kids, thanks for that description ;p We're under a year younger then you, for pete's sake ;)
I'll wear my Puffy AmiYumi concert shirt, which is distinguishable by its take on the New York logo with A and Y, as opposed to N and Y.
I debated bringing my camera, but in the end I'd probably lose it, so I'm opting for a game boy camera to photograph madness in the car ride there and back :P

So is everyone still going tomorrow despite the threat of Isabel? Or rather, the threat of her weather altering patterns? The sun is starting to peak out here in Detroit, but I'm still worried about what tomorrow might bring.

24 hours from now gang! It's raining here in Cleveland today, but I went to www.weather.com and checked out tomorrow's forecast for Sandusky. Lookin' good!

Seems like DPCP is gonna be fallish and cool, but dry all day! Hope everyone has a great time and be sure to tell us all about it! (Park may even be a little less crowded if folks steer clear thinking it might rain...)
