What's the point of doing it? I know you can then run MAME on Xbox but I already have it on PC and don't really care to play it on Xbox. Is there anything else out there that I'm missing because I don't get the appeal of doing that?

Is there anything else out there that I'm missing

*cough*.. from what I hear:

SNES
Mame
Colecovision
Atari 2600
Genesis/SegaCD/32x
NES
Daphne (Dragons Lair, etc.)
Final Burn (CPS2 games)
Turbografx16/PC Engine/PC Engine CD (Gates of Thunder, Dracula X)
GBA/GB/GBC
Wonderswan
Intellivision
MSX
SMS
Amiga
Neo Geo Pocket
Lynx
...amongst others.

'Course most of these can be played on the PC. But a PC is hard to lug between tv's imho

I got mine modd'ed..

the DVD player that I installed is SO MUCH better than the one that's build into the XBOX!! Not only do you not require the remote (You can use the joystick) but I have a lot more control of the playback...

I now have really nice features... Like the ability to play DVD/VCD/SVCD/DIVX/MP3 as well as use the joystick in all of it to zoom in and out of the picture down to the pixel! Show me a DVD player that can do that!

:)

Oh.. and it's also nice to be able to backup all the games to the HD and not get up to switch games/discs.. using the special key combo on the controller, you reset the system, select the new game you want to play, and off you go!

You backup the games to the hard drive? About how many games can you fit onto the standard HD in the Xbox? :hmm:

I heard that if you try to go online with a moded Xbox, Microsoft can tell it's been moded and will "blacklist" that particular unit from playing online. Is that true, or is it just Microsoft propaganda?

@norkusa: Yeah, that's what I've heard. It seems kind of harsh, but if it keeps the cheaters away from Live, I guess I can't complain too much.

Hey, what's up with that "chipless" mod in that article linked on the front page? Will M$ be able to tell you've been naughty if you do that one?

And I was about to point at M$ and do a "HA HA", but if Microsoft can't tell you've modded yer box, wouldn't that mean that the ch34t0rZ would take over Live?

All that and more, including totally region free DVD. I also have it connected to my LAN all the time, and can stream DIVX, and mp3's to my Xbox in the basement, controlled fron the XBOX controller. It's a now a full blown mutimedia PC/Xbox/ ALL emu machine all in one. It RAWKS!

Yes MS will detect the mod, and permanently ban the XBOX from Xbox live. Unless of course you've put a switch on the chip (like I did), and I can "unmod" it with the tripping of the switch.

I have no XBOX games backed up yet, nor do I own any illegal copies. Now do you see why someone would do it?

"Anyone here have a modded Xbox?"

My X-Box is pretty well moderated, except for the Battlezone, but the only ones that hang out there are Halo and Splinter Cell. They're pretty rowdy.

I heard that the newer XBoxes couldn't handle the same kind of chips as the older series ones, due to some change in hardware. Is this true? And, if so, is there a new chip out that works for all models of the box?

I know that some of the older chips won't work in the newest Xboxes, but I'm pretty sure there are some more modern chips that'll work in all units. Sadly, I don't have a link.

I have not tried this yet because I just was it today.

Sounds interesting.

Any and all current XBOX's can be modded.

You can install up to about a 160GB HD as a replacement to the internal 8 and backup all your games to it.

There's also people that are working on releasing a PVR application for the XBOX (i.e. make your XBOX into a Tivo clone!)

I too have a mod chip with an external switch that allows me to easily disable it.. That's the one cool thing the PS2 mod doesn't have. :)

The only problem with XBOX modding is backing up games. It's a long procedure to backup games.. no where as simple as backing up your precious audio CD's or PS/2 games.

Need......modded....XBox....

Sadly, this will probably have to wait until about christmas this coming year (unless we see another price drop soon).

The second the Xbox drops to 149, I'm going to buy another one, pop in a 120 gig hard drive, and have myself a media player for the front room.
