*UPDATE*

Looks like non-importing gaijin are SOL!

There are currently no plans for the PS2 version to be released outside of Japan, and no plans for a Wii version either. It is being released in Japan, due to the high demand for the game. So there are no plans for a worldwide release... so far.

Glad I own a JPN PS2.....

Fans of the original NiGHTS Into Dreams have been watching the development of the Wii sequel, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams with a delightful mixture of joy and anxiety, fearing their beloved title would be marred by the shaky hand of a Sega not quite as sure of themselves as they were back in the days of the Saturn. In an absolutely wondrous turn of events, those players need not worry about getting their NiGHTS on proper, as long as they have a PlayStation 2 around. Famitsu has revealed that a port of the original game will be hitting the PS2 this February in Japan, complete with updated graphics and 16:9 modes for those newfangled wide screen televisions we keep hearing about. For me this is even better news than the Wii sequel. Screw Journey of Dreams - this is all I wanted. Slip Christmas NiGHTS in there as a bonus and I'm set for another 10 years.Updated graphics and such? I'm there....

Meh. I love NiGHTS, but it doesn't need porting.

This better come to America. And they better not fuck it up like they did to Virtua Fighter 2.

I think its a great thing to get people who didn't play it on saturn to play it. Personally I don't care though since I've already played it and own it for saturn. I am excited about the wii game though!

Well, being a staunch supporter of sega (hence my name here), I can't wait for this, I admit I am more excited for the Wii version, but any love shown to this great game is appreciated.

Two words send a shiver down my spine when I think of this: Sonic Genesis. :-/

Still though, JoD looks amazing and apparently plays amazing, so they might just treat the purple one with the respect that's been sorely lacking from the blue one's games...

Um, the original version had a 16:9 option. So this is nothing new ;)

Awesome. I never got a chance to buy the original, so this will be a great chance for me to pick it up. That is, if it does come to the U.S.

Makes me wonder if they'll port Panzer Dragoon Saga to the PS2 as well. I don't see why not.

Better yet, the complete Shining Force 3 trilogy? Yes it's a pipe dream, but for years we thought NiGHTS was dead, and now this...

They should've put it on XBLA.

And since I don't own a PS2, and don't plan on buying one until they're below $100, this is crappy news.

If they remake Jet Grind Radio, and put it on the PS2, I'll lose all respect for Sega.

Just because you don't own the console? That's asinine. Sega is a software company. They make money by releasing games. The PS2 is still outselling the PS3 and will probably go down as being the most successful console of all time in terms of market domination and longevity. Why wouldn't Sega want to port their titles to that platform?

The sequel was on the first Xbox. And honestly, XBLA seems like a better place for NiGHTS.

They're putting Rez on XBLA. Why not NiGHTS (or JGR)? Or even on the Wii, where the sequel is going?

Sega's putting Rez on the Xbox 360? I thought it was Q Entertainment's title and that they were the ones doing it, how's Sega involved beyond being publisher for the original Dreamcast release and for the PS2 release in some regions?

Edit- Looks like it was Sega developed through United Game Artist(AM9).

No chance. Not without major changes, at least. JGR was made in a way that it was impossible to run on a PS2 because of the way the RAM works on the DC and how it sucks on the PS2. Something about being way too colorful for the PS2. Or something. It was in an interview with somebody on the JGR development team I read in the Official Dreamcast Magazine back in the day.

I'll be importing this. If it comes out in the US, I'll buy it again. Hell, if the only upgrade to the graphics were supporting 480p and higher, I'd be perfectly happy. Nice to see I wasn't the only one that remembered the widescreen mode in the game.

You know, it'd be pretty awesome if they extend the draw distance, too. I don't want to get my hopes too high on the whole "upgraded graphics" bit, but it is neat to think of what they could do with the power of the PS2 vs what they were able to accomplish on the Saturn (which was quite a bit).

Ohh, I hope they leave in some of those classic bugs, too. You know, like being able to fly feet-first and such :)

Maybe they couldn't have ported it back when there was an Official Dreamcast Magazine, but development on the PS2 has evolved quite a bit sense then. I doubt there is anything that couldn't be done just as well on the the PS2 as on the Dreamcast.

I'm not sure. Size limitations? I'm not sure how big Rez is sizewise though, so I dunno.

WOW soo much hate for the PS2 but then again this is DP where Nintendo is GOD and everything else is fodder for the MANY nintendophiles that frequent this ONCE GREAT retro gaming community.

One minute many of the gamers here are praising the powers of the New Gen consoles and in the next explaining away the reasons why their savior the almighty Wii is STILL the greatest thing since sliced bread even though its technically LAST GEN also and all in the same breath hating on just about ANYTHING made by SONY especially the Playstation2.

Hell now a classic game isnt pushed out on XBLive or the Virtual Console I guess it quickly goes under the label "AUTOMATICALLY SUCKS" for many of the gamers here at DP eh?

Back to the topic at hand:

I played the HELL out of the Saturn original and would LUV to see it ported to the PS2 even with just "slightly" updated graphics etc.

Let the flaming begin im used to it from many of the members (the nintendo ELITE) here at DP by now.:bareass:

I'm not hating on the PS2. I'm just pissed NiGHTS is coming out for it, and I don't have one.

And this brings up the whole thing about the sequel being on the Wii - you think that would've been the more logical move for Sega (or even make it multiplatform)

Anyone know if NiGHTS will be a budget title? I'll probably still pick it up. I have a PS2 library consisting of a big 3 games (I picked up Rez before it was given another production run, God of War, and My 'hot coffee', AO rated copy of GTA:SA). Just nothing to play them on.

I'm not really sure if its a great idea to release this at around the same time as the sequal. I've hardly played the original but have been waiting for xmas time when i am back at my mother's where i was going to bring the Saturn back with me particularly for nights as i'd rather play the original instead of (or before) the wii sequal.

I went back and re-read most of what was posted on the first page. It isn't Ps2 bashing, it's minor bashing of a company porting a classic, beloved game to an extremely mainstream system. If you don't have a problem with that, that's fine. I don't. I never had a chance to play Nights on Saturn, and would love to play it, even on Ps2.

Besides, Boat is right. GTFO. And, by the way, no one wants to see your webpage, dedicated to.....that's right, Natalie Portman and Silent Hill. Creepy f#ck.

Anyway, as I told you via pm,

If you want to stay here, by all means, do, but I think that you have a very narrow outlook on things and only focus on what you think is a Nintendo bias on this board. However, I think you'll only be ignored or ridiculed when you post your opinions. Attacking a forum and accusing it of bias as a whole isn't a good way to get a lot of people over to your side.

I agree. By now, who doesn't have a PS2? And if you don't and want to play Nights, the price of a Dreamcast+Nights w/3D controller is probably close to equal that of a used PS2+the rerelease of Nights, not to mention giving you access to the largest software library of all time in the PS2 and PS1.

Exactly, wait. Did you say Dreamcast? I thought it was Saturn that Nights was on?

Anyways, to even think of how they can improve the graphics is just mind blowing. I hope this is ported to the US PS2, Sega would be stupid if they didn't

You know, I really don't think the PS2 is going out anytime soon. Especially since Japan just recieved the newer models with the internal supply.

Another Twisted Metal in the works (PSP port of Head-On I hear with more maps). Even talk of a port of that Silent Hill Origins from PSP may even come to PS2. I say we run this baby to the ground.

Heck even Rock Band is still coming in December for PS2. I haven't seen a system this well supported since, PS1. It lasted until 2004 I think? Good 9 year run.

More like a good six year run and a pretty bad three year run at the end.

In the PlayStation's final three years (2002, 2003, and 2004), about 79 games were released. A few were pretty good, but most were pretty bad. The overall rating for those 79 games was 5.8, which according to many DP members is worthless.

I hope they do decide to release it on more systems if it comes to the U.S. I don't play the PS2 at all anymore but would like to see it in HD on the 360. Ah well I guess I'll just keep playing it on the Saturn without the updated goodies.

Well, I for one am very happy to hear. I don't have a 360. Finally, I get to play NiGHTS! I've had the demo disc for the Saturn for a while, and ave been wanting to get around to the actual game for a while. Depending on the reviews, I'll check this one out.

I don't really care about the updated graphics part. If you look at the other Sega Ages games, the remakes never seem to play. I'm just drooling over the straight port. It looks identical to the saturn version...which still to this day is one of the greatest games ever created.

NiGHTS for some reason sends me into trippy euphoria and instant nostalgia every time I put the CD in, and to have that same fantastic gameplay on PS3 without needing to hook the Saturn up to play it? Bliss. when this game comes out I might actually have a reason to turn the Sony Grill on once in a while.

All I can say now is.....they better not fuck up the sequel on the Wii.

And as for the comment about 360 HD NiGHTS? I don't think my heart or my brain could handle the excitement. That'd be Cardiac Arrest in a 200mb download.

How the hell can Sega think there isn't a demand for NiGHTS in the West? Hopefully the sales of JoD will convince them otherwise. That and the 120 million userbase of the PS2.
