Is there a comparison?

I can't really judge, because I haven't played it yet.

But I'm hearing Assassins Creed is basically mediocre.

But Oblivion is an RPG. AC looks more like a stealth game - like a medieval Splinter Cell game. So I don't really think you can compare the two...

Compare a first-person game to a third-person game?

Compare an RPG to an adventure game?

Compare something completely brilliant, with a tenured tradition of quality to something completely overhyped, with lots of potential?

My humble opinion: Oblivion is apples. Assassin's Creed is oranges.

Sorry.

Not really comparable, Creed looks a hell of a lot better, combat takes some getting used to but looks more fluid than Oblivion's. World is not nearly as large, not really an RPG by any stretch of the imagination. Story is shaping up to be less generic than Oblivion.

Basically, Assassin's Creed is an action-adventure wheras Oblivion is an action-RPG. Not too similar, but if I'd have to pick one [mind you, I've only played my copy of Creed for around 40 minutes], Oblivion is longer and gives you more bang for your buck.

cant compare. im assuming youre choosing which to buy? get oblivion while its cheap, by the time youre bored/done w/ it assassins creed would drop in price lol. really just get whichever genre you like best, both are perfect representatives from their respective worlds.

DP, diskoboy... i assume you guys didnt like AC? i loved it personally. but honestly i didnt pay much attention to or followed the hype at all. all i saw/heard of the game was the video uploaded to Xbox Live and the reports of the demo at E3 sucking. when i got to playing it on day one, i was amazed and very satisfied.

No need to apologize, that's why I asked. I already own (and love) Oblivion. I read some reviews talking about the size and scope of the city AC takes place in, and that it had some RPG elements in it, so I was wondering if it would be something I'd like since I like Oblivion so much.

well i liked oblivion a lot (although i thought it was extremely dissapointing on many levels after being an avid fan of morrowing, both of pc of course). and i like AC (as mentioned so many times on the forums here)... so maybe that means something.

I think that AC is definitely worth a look, but it has nothing on the depth of Oblivion. Damascus and Jerusalem are huge, but they're huge like the city of Crackdown; you can't enter the buildings, and the side missions/methods of investigating yer targets in AC are pretty repetitious after a while.

I tend to think of AC as Crackdown: 1000 AD.

I tend to think of AC as Crackdown: 1000 AD.

That's pretty much what I've been telling people too.

Assassin's Creed is an open world "sandbox" game that takes place during the Crusades. The combat is excellent (once you get the hang of it and your "moves" are returned to you) and the control is second to none (think Prince of Persia combined with Crackdown). The cities and countryside are huge open expanses where you're character can do as they please. There's a stealth mechanic if you so choose, or you can just battle it out with every guard you see. Tons of hidden items to find and hidden enemies to battle.

I see that most people accusing the game of being repetitive or overhyped, haven't played it. So what if people overhype a game...how does that effect your enjoyment? Do some of you fancy yourself "elite gaming rebels" and can't play what the stupid masses play? Dumb. Really dumb. Save your spite for that latest Madden iteration. You're missing out on an great game.

I myself try and avoid hype altogether now; the 'enthusiast press'. i.e. game magazines and websites, tend to dash or artificially inflate my expectations of what a game can do for me.

I think that the criticisms leveled at Assassins Creed have some merit, though, as did the criticisms leveled at Crackdown. There just isn't much to do, but if you enjoy what there IS to do, you'll love it.

(I like Crackdown more than AC, myself. I think that the lack of any real story made Crackdown oddly focused, allowing you to concentrate on 'powering up'. The framerate on AC isn't as sharp as Crackdown either, and I'm a confessed framerate whore.)
