View Full Version : advice for VG blogg please?
Hi,
I'd really like to start a classic video game blog, i know only a handfull of people are going to read it, friends and collegues etc. but it's intention is not one of grandeur - simply to get some of my thoughts down in weekly/monthly short esseys, similar to those seen from the columnists in EDGE magazine.
Could anyone give me any advice on which blogging software would be best for this type of thing or any other advice on starting and maintaining this type of a blog?
many thanks.
tom.

Would it be unreasonable to suggest that, if you are compelled to write, you try to find a more widely-read website that might post your material? I mean, it's nice if more people read it, you won't have to maintain the site yourself, and if nothing else it will give you some incentive to keep it going, right?

Well, there are different ways to go at it... I like Livejournal since people who "befriends" you (ie. who subscribe to your blog) can access it easily. I like Blogger as a blogging software, but not so much for follow-ups. Of course, if you have a Facebook or a myspace page you can blog there too...

WordPress is some great easily customizable software for blogging websites.
If you do not wish to keep up a site, www.LANgaming.net is always open to submissions.

I use blogger; it suits me just fine. Plus, it's easy to implement Google Analytics to monitor your traffic.

I've used many different blogging tools/sites and I've found Wordpress to be the best. It's very easy to set up and you don't have to spend a lot of time on site design and that junk. They also do a great job of getting your blog advertised and submitted to search engines. My blogs suck and I never update, but I still get decent random traffic.

Jorpho = i think you're right, what is the best way to find a site that would be willing to publish the material of an unknown? do i just find the site and email the webmaster?

I imagine that most places that might publish your material would make it readily obvious as to how you might contribute something. Or they might at least have forums where you might introduce yourself.
As to how you might find an apporpriate place, I'm not actually sure... It seems that I occasionally find posts from people saying "hai plz write 4 my site", but I guess these are not all that common. Many years ago I submitted GOTW articles to Classicgaming.com , but the Internet was a very different place then.
Then again, come to think of it, perhaps that particular site might be interested in submissions again at this time? The site did recently go through an overhaul (though you'd never know it from the level of activity in the forums).
