View Full Version : PS2/3 Component Cables not working on HDTV

I bought the offical component cables for the PS2/3 for my original model PS2. They work on my SDTV but not my HDTV. I don't want to hook it up on the SDTV as its about to be moved downstairs into the living room. I want all the consoles upstairs connected to one TV.

I know the ports aren't bad on the TV, tested them with the Xbox 360, and the cables aren't bad since they work on the other TV.

Don't have the model number handy but I believe its the first model that was released in the U.S.

Any advice on how to get them to work? The store won't take them back since I can't find a receipt. I acutally don't think they gave me one since I normally put them in the bag and didn't open the cables for a couple days.

The only other cable I can find in the house is an RF Adapter.

Is there an ouput setting on the PS3 that needs to be changed? If your PS3 is set for 480i (which would work on the SDTV) and you've plugged it into a 480p/720p/1808p input on your HDTV, it won't display.

I don't have a PS3, so I don't know if it auto-configures the output resolution or noet.

Just to clarify again, it is a PS2. I changed the only settings that I could find, RGB output, to component.

I don't know if it would help or not, but there is another setting where you can change the aspect ratio.

Are you not getting a picture at all? I've noticed on some PS2 games (most notably Guitar Hero II) that you have to force it to go into widescreen mode by holding triangle and X while the game is loading, or the picture will look like garbage.

Can you at least see the PS2 settings menu while hooked up to component, or are you not getting any picture at all? I know some cheap HDTV's (like mine) can't play PS1 games (and some PS2 games like Ico), because the upscaler in them is so poor. If I want to play them, I gotta switch back over to composite cables.

What I can't understand is why on my tv the ps2 games play in 1080 and the ps3 games play in 720.
This is really ridiculous for next gen. All the 360 games play in 1080.

It clearly states on the back of PS3 game cases what output they support.

Not all PS3 games support the 1080 output standard.

But ... PS2 games on the other hand are upscaled by the hardware and software in the PS3, for the most part they're not "actually" outputting in 1080 ... some PS2 games like Burnout 3 support the standard and ACTUALLY output in 1080, but it's only a handful of PS2 titles.

Yeah but I can't understand why the games on a hd system with an Hdmi can't or are not outputting 1080.

I only found out about the ps2 hitting 1080 when I hit the info button on my remote.

I just seems weird that an old ps2 game is putting it out and not alot of ps3 games.

I am not getting a picture at all. I don't think I've tried it with any games in the PS2 because I was trying to get the settings menu.

After work I will try it with a couple different games to see if having a game in it changes anything.
