I had completely forgotten, but saw on another board, it's Dreamcast's 9th birthday today.

no it's not 9/9/99 (the U.S. release date) but 27/11/98 (or 11/27/98)

that's right Dreamcast was released 9 years ago today in Japan, on November 27, 1998.

wow, nine freaking years ago, the best system EVAR (that's the fanboy in me)

:D

The Dreamcast died an undeserving death. I still have my first Dreamcast from Sept 99.. the video doesn't work anymore but I WILL NEVER GET RID OF IT!

I remember getting my japanese system on launch day and spending the entire night playing games like Marvel Vs Capcom, Power Stone, Virtua Fighter 3 and Sonic Adventure on it.

*sniff* good times.

Happy Birthday Dreamcast...I love you, and we all miss you. It was a travesty that you died so young due to the Sony hype machine about the PS2. When people found out Sony was lying about the PS2's capabilities, it was too late...and we lost a wonderful machine that was several years ahead of it's time.

I can't find an exact date for Naomi's debut, but I'd assume it was around the same time as the Dreamcast. It was first demonstrated in '98.

So here's my 'Happy Birthday' to the DCs big sister: the Naomi arcade hardware, and the ever so sexy cabinets that house this wonderful hardware.

Here's to many more hours of Marvel vs Capcom 2, Power Stone, Melty Blood and the Guilty Gears.

Unfortunately, I made it to the Dreamcast party after it was too late. I was never a big fan of Sega by the time that the Dreamcast was released, and so I had no real interest in it. But, I finally picked up a used one as my wedding gift from my wife about 3 and a half years ago, and I love the system. Honestly, the main reason why I wanted it was for Fire Prowrestling D, but it turns out that there a lot of really good games for the system. I still have it hooked up today.

Bought mine on launch day, in America.

Still have it, the box, the demo disc, the Internet Browser 1.0, and all the paperwork.

Still play it on a daily basis, thanks to Armada, Power Stone 2, Rez, Mr. Driller, Marvel Vs. Capom 2, and Jet Set Radio. But I really need to get the system battery fixed soon. I hate having to set the time and date every time I turn it on.

I think I'm gonna go play a game of JSR to celebrate.

I purchased a Dreamcast off of E-bay 2 years ago so I could finally play D2 and it was well worth the purchase. If only things went a little better for Sega, it may have still be around today.

Happy 9, Dreamcast. It's the 'latest' system I own. After DC, I peaked :p

Happy birthday to the older and wiser half of Wiimcast -- our beloved Dreamcast. I hold my Agetec Arcade Stick high in celebration, but now I think I'm going to play something. Maybe Shenmue II, Jet Grind Radio, or Marvel vs. Capcom 2...

Huzzah to the second finest system of all time! (I love the Dc, but I can't discount the SNES)

Even so, such great memories!

I still have my DC hooked up and play it at least as much as my other consoles. Most of my favorite DC games are no longer exclusives, but I still think the system has a great library.

Definetly sega's best system (they went out in style..sorta) a real shame it ended like it did. Never owned a DC though just used my best friends alot (more than he did!) I had a PSONE, see being a poor jr high students we couldn't have both but wanted to play games on both so...

He still has his DC but I no longer have my PSone (I do however have a ps2) however I've been looking at getting a DC lately and may well jump in

if we are all still buying games and playing games on it, that means its still alive. One more year and it'll be the 10 year anniversary. I think I am going to play a couple rounds of something on my DC tonight.

I might have to get out my Dreamcast and finally finish Sonic Adventure 2, and maybe play some PSO.

Happy Birthday Dreamcast. ... It was a travesty that you died so young due to the Sony hype machine about the PS2. ... we lost a wonderful machine that was several years ahead of it's time.

I agree. It was frustrating.

My experience working at a major video game store:

The hard core gamers lined up the night before the Dreamcast was released and bought it right away. It was exciting. However, mainstream/casual gamers fell for Sony's insane hype and waited an extra year for the Playstation 2 to come out.

Even when the Dreamcast was selling for $99 in late 2000 and early 2001...and the PlayStation 2 was sold out for weeks at a time...most customers were still choosing to wait for the next PlayStation 2 shipment and spend $300.

I'd ask customers why they'd rather spend $300 on a PlayStation 2 than $99 on a Dreamcast. Many said it was because the PlayStation 2 could play DVD movies. I explained to them that they could buy a Dreamcast and a separate DVD player (which comes with a remote controller!) for less than the price of a PlayStation 2, but they didn't care.

What is wrong with people?

I remember when SegaNet came out and they offered like a $150 rebate for anyone who signed up. Which pretty meant you got the Dreamcast for free. I had the Dreamcast the first couple of weeks it came out before there was even a rebate for SegaNet, I still think the Dreamcast is in the top 3 of best consoles of all time.

I still have my first DC, although its controller board needs a new fused resistor, and it tends to crash. Good thing I've got a spare.

My love for this console continues to this day, as well as for the entire Naomi platform for the arcades. Although I never owned any of the Naomi boards, I've always been in awe of the games that Sega and others have put on the system. Kind of reminds me of Atari in the early days :)

For those interested, I've been working on a classic-style space shooter for the Dreamcast, with some newer "shmup" elements for some time now (over a year, on and off). It's almost finished (needs new graphics, as the ones I've used are borrowed, and I can't seem to find a pixel artist interested in helping me finish it), and there's a month-old beta up on my blog at http://www.briandeuel.com. There's PC and Dreamcast versions there, and an OS X version is forthcoming. (DC version needs Diskjuggler 4.x or Alcohol 120% to burn it).

It'll be free once it's finished. Give it a whirl if anyone is interested and drop me a line at the email address within the readme with your comments!

Ooh, when I finally get round to getting some blank cds i may give that game a whirl.

I love the Dreamcast a lot. I've got stacks of games for it waiting to be played and quite recently I bought one of those hefty arcade sticks that I've sadly under-utilised so far. Sadly my Dreamcast has started playing up and has trouble loading discs.

Whoever mentioned the PS2s ability to play DVDs, i finally bought one a year and a half ago and its DVD playing feature was one of the main reasons I got it, I'm still annoyed that the Wii doesn't play dvds.

The Dreamcast is still my favorite system. I own 6 Dreamcasts (including a broken and yellowed in-store kiosk Dreamcast), all except one is in storage. I found the one I'm currently using for $20 complete and boxed at a yard sale. The kid I bought it from sold it to me because he didn't like "old technology." ;)

I had recently gotten back to Grandia II after stopping and restarting the game 3 or 4 times since '02, and in honor of the Dreamcast's birthday, I am going to finish it before the end of the year...maybe.

I was living in Japan when the DC was released. I remember how huge a deal it was there. Unfortunately, this was during a break in my gaming habits. In retrospect, I wish I would have picked one up. One of my host families had one and we logged tons of hours on it. Happy belated Bday Dreamcast!
