Dunno if it has or not. Probably in some form. This title brought to mind all the NES games that had "19xx" or some variant of that in the story. Double Dragon was one I remember.

We're very close to outdating the timeline of the original Mega Man games (200x), which I think is just neat as can be.

Snatcher took place in the future (originally released in 1988 and taking place in 1991, it was changed to 1996 after coming out in the US in 1994)

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake took place in 1999 (released in 1990)
Metal Gear Solid took place in 2005 (released in 1998)
Ghost Recon 2 (PS2/GC version) takes place in 2007 (released in 2004) (soon!)
Splinter Cell takes place in 2004 (released in 2002)
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow takes place in 2006 (released in 2004)
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory takes place in 2007 (released in 2005) (soon!)

Smash T.V. took place in 1999 (released in 1990)

Was it Smash T.V., or Super Smash (SNES)? But, either way, yes..."The year is 1999. Television....."

The storyline to .hack began in 2005 with the Pluto's Kiss incident. The main part of the story doesn't begin until 2012, though.

It's all about the year 2000.

Exidy's Death Race was implicitly set in the year 2000.

Tempest 2000, Breakout 2000, and Defender 2000, all for the Jag .

Give me time. I'll find more.

Well, technically, only when they recount when "The Catastrophe" occured was where the date was June 6 1991 or 1996. The actual timeline of the game is still set in 2047 :)

Was just thinking this when I saw the topic title.

Also, I believe Zombie Nation (NES) was set in 1999.

Earthbound takes place in "199X", but I'm not sure if that would count, as their goal at the time appeared to be for the game to take place in the present. It could be argued that the game is supposed to take place sometime in the 90's and it's simply up to us to decide when.

Then again I could be thinking far too deeply on this.

It is no longer the 90's. We have no more time for Klax.

I actually beat Klax for the Lynx when I was thirteen or fourteen years old back in the early 1990s. The ending wasn't much. "You are a true Klaxer."

As far as Mega Man 1 and 2 goes, MM2 specifically said 200X. However, some of the subsequent games said 20XX. Still, that can't be too far into the future compared to MM2.

Did anybody else think 200X and stuff like that didn't refer to years as we commonly refer to them back when you were younger?? I always thought 200X in MM2 stood for something like After Colony (AC) 195 in Gundam Wing or UC (Universal Century) 0079 in the UC Gundam timeline. Like, it was so far into the future, a new year system was created.

No, totally different game.

Details details! :)
Hey, good thing we dodged that whole catastrophe thing, though. That would have sucked.

Clash at Demonhead was another one of those, it was set in 199x. Still love the crap out of that game, though.
