ICO for the Playstation 2 is using GPL-licensed code from libarc. Sony could end up having to release the source code for the entire game!
It took six years for someone to discover that?

I don't see them being forced to do it so I don't see them doing it. Though they should since they did use GPL

Sony could end up having to release the source code for the entire game!
That's so implausible that even insinuating that it's a real possibility is retarded.
Awesome info, though. Shoulda just linked to the site (http://astrange.ithinksw.net/ico/) instead of a site linking to the site.

Wouldn't the disassembly operation itself be illegal on some level?

Nope, when the person seeking the understanding has legitimate reason for doing so and when no other means of access to the unprotected elements exists, such disassembly is as a matter of law a fair use of the copyrighted work (http://digital-law-online.info/cases/24PQ2D1561.htm).

lol yea and we all see how media producing companies treat fair use these days with their copy protections its like the constitution in their eyes a wishy washy old document in the way of PROFITS!

Read "DP Servbot"s signature. It just fetches news for the forum. Its intention isnt't to figure out the best path to various URL's.

I'm not really seeing a lot of evidence that the code is GPL'd. The GPL'd library in question shares code with a non licensed library written in the 80's. You can't really say with any certanty which one Sony used.
Even if they did use the GPL'd code, the only person who could initiate legal action against Sony is the original author who doesn't seem to be reachable.

I'm well aware of what DP Servbot is, but it generally just kicks out a bunch of poorly formated, cut and paste news as a low quality opening post.

There is always the option of some dedicated member of the boards to take up the ServBot duties... I nominate mobboss! :evil laugh:
