View Full Version : Zelda clones - your fave?

Out of the various clones of Zelda (success breeds imitation is nowhere more true than video gaming) which are your favorites?
My nomination for a game that is more Zelda-like than Zelda is Golden Axe Warrior for the Sega Master System.
(Neutopia 1 and 2 are probably right behind GAW.)

My vote goes to neutopia. that game was crazy fun. the only flawto neutopia was its god awful lengthy password system. If neutopia had the same system as zelda it would be pretty evenly matched in my book. Neutopia is prolly my favorite turbo grafx game to date.

I would say Willow (nes). It has so many Zelda-like elements such as the view, dungeon crawling, lots of different items to help get to different areas of the game. It also did it very well. The thing is, though, that it doesn't feel like a Zelda clone. It feels like a brand new game that doesn't take any ideas from Zelda.

A tad easy, but good Zelda fun on the Genesis.

Hmm, I guess my favorite would be Landstalker. I know its not exackly like Zelda, but it reminds me of why I love the Legend of Zelda series so much. My second nod would have to go to Neutopia. I had the patience to finish the first one back in the day, but I never really got into part II because the password was even longer.

But then the question is: "Zelda clones thread clones - your fave?"
Personally, I like the first one you linked to best since it's the one I posted in.
Speaking of which, who else is totally excited about the DS releases for Ys Books 1 & 2 that got announced recently? Apparently there's going to be an attack button now (which will make the games feel even more Zelda-like, I suppose) and they'll be released as separate games and both full priced, but there's supposed to be lots of new stuff added including multiplayer and I'm betting on some really lush new graphics and everything. I can't wait.

I haven't played enough of them to really have a favorite, but I like Golden Axe Warrior and Terranigma a lot more than any of the 2D Zelda games. I find the actual 2D Zelda games boring and primitive.

This is one of my favorite games of all time, although, due to the JRPGish parts, I personally don't consider it a Zelda clone.
My favorite is probably either Illusion of Gaia or Soul Blazer. Both excellent games. I think I like the latter slightly more.

Also one of my favorite NES games. Currently playing it now, just took a short hiatus for Mass Effect. My avatar is Coronya and Isfa, taken from a Japanese comic book based on the game.
Anyways, I wouldn't consider it a Zelda clone as it barely contains any elements from the series beside the action battles, and those spinny desert creatures that hide under the sand.
And to answer the OPs question my favorite clone is Alundra.

I always loved ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES on the NES. It had some great variety, with jousting, horse racing and a multitude of different perspectives. That and you could equip Duncan with a loaf of bread as a weapon for battle. A game with that kind of available options is a game I respect. Rather than just ape the film it actually built on the story quite well. I'm an SMS man, but I can't deny my fond memories for RH:POT.
Do the Ys games count as Zelda clones?
No, and if it did, Ys: Book I and II for the Turbo CD would not only be the best Zelda clone, but better than any Zelda game period. In fact, I've long put that game as perhaps the greatest ever.

You should have got yourself a Turbo CD-ROM (or that other battery pack for non-CD owners). You can save the game without the password. Made it sooooooo much easier. And while Neotopia is outstanding, if it's your favorite Turbo game, it's blatenly obvious you never had the CD-ROM. Ys: Book I and II not only blew Neutopia away, it blew EVERY Turbo game away, and to this day is perhaps the greatest game ever. You MUST play it if you never did.

To me the Y’s games count. My favorite of the series would have to be Y’s III, which was more like Zelda II in its execution. Man that game had one of the best endings I have ever witnessed.

Yes, I love that game. So very colorful, and I remember the graphics at the time blew me away. The really funny thing about Golvellius for me was the damsel you were charged to rescue was named Rena. Which is my grandmothers name. I don’t know why, I just thought it was funny at the time.

Sticking with that generation of games:
The Guardian Legend. Superior to Zelda in nearly every way too without even getting into the shmup elements.
Honorable mentions: Crystalis, Willow, Axe Battler, Golvellius (depsite some fuzzy hit detection), and StarTropics.

But how could it count if you walk into things, rather than swinging your sword like in Zelda? Also, it uses hit points (HP). Games using HP are more true RPG's, and can never be Zelda clones.
As for Ys III, it was a good game, but I was extremely disapponted with a side scroller after Book I and II. Can't remember the ending though.

Dark Savior. I know I'll get crucified for saying this, but I always thought Dark Savior did a better job at 3D Zelda than Ocarina of Time.

I completely forgot about Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Its a VERY good game. It is one of the very few games based on a movie that is actually really good.

Another vote for Neutopia here - one of my favourite games on the TG-16 as well, and though I agree that Y's Bks I & II is "better", I certainly enjoyed Neutopia very much... I'd like to try Neutopia II - now that I have my NEO PCE Flash Cart, I think maybe I'll load up the ROM and see what that's about this weekend... :)

I certainly didn't mean to imply that Neutopia wasn't great. It is. Off the top of my head, it was better than perhaps any non-CD Turbo game. Just that I thought Ys was in a league of it's own. Like comparing the best guy in college basketball to Michael Jordon in his prime. :)
