I did a quick search didn't see this. Any one here have Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the DS? If so how is it? Is it hard to control with the DS's small d-pad?

Well i've got my Xmas copy right here, but i'm being good and its staying sealed until then (like i'll have time to play it then *snicker* /me looks at the sheer mound of DS stuff that needs to be played still).

I know that Intvsama has one and has played a bunch online and all that good stuff... I've passed on this topic link to him, hopefully theres a post from him.

Stu held me down and fed me my own socks until I agreed to reply to this thread. So here it goes.

It's pretty good. All the features of the arcade version are in there, characters, stages, 'alities, special moves, that good stuff. I would have liked to see Rain and Noob from Trilogy make it into the game as well as Brutalities, but since they weren't in the 'cade version of UMK3 I'm not surprised they weren't in there. Graphics aren't as smooth as the DS screen is a different aspect ratio than the normal 'cade.

Online play really depends on the connection. I've had smooth seamless online matches, then I've also had where it's unplayable. The smaller DS d-pad and controls in general do take a bit of time to grow accustomed to but when you play a few matches it becomes second nature.

The 2nd screen is cool that it displays the special moves and 'alities, but when you're playing online not only do you now have button mashers to deal with, but button mashers who will randomly throw a special at you. (imagine Liu Kang, a dozen high punches, 3 jump kicks, a few more high punches then a random low fireball, then another, and then a high fireball, then a flying kick, repeat...) There are a number of REALLY good players online tho', myself included. My name is PowerGlove on UMK.

Like many online DS games your rank is done by points, but there's no leaderboard or levels or anything like that, so it's pretty basic.

I haven't bothered with Puzzle Kombat, there are umpteen better puzzle games out there, I play it for the fighting, which is as good as you remember it.

If you get it be sure to lemme know your friend code so we can hook up and play.

That's weird because everyone I've talked to about this game says puzzle kombat is the best part.
I wish they would have used an updated MKII instead of UMK3. That game was actually fun.

No smaller than any of Nintendo's other D-pads, no? (Or are you referring to the AXBY buttons?)

Have you ever used any of Nintendo's other d-pads? Aside from the portables they're generally big and responsive, the best d-pads hands down. The portables, while responsive, are tiny tiny tiny. I'd love to see a DS Lite mod to throw in a SNES d-pad. 8*)
