My sole exposure to the Advance Wars series was an occasion a while ago when I rented Advance Wars DS for a little while. I got as far as the first wide-open mission where you face off against dual commanders, which I was losing horribly when I had to stop to return the game. I didn't much care for what I had seen up to that point.

By the grace of Bira Bira, a cheap sealed copy of Advance Wars 2 has fallen into my hands. I am now trying to decide: should I leave this game in its enticing sealed state and attempt to parlay into something that I really want (like FFVI, or the Castlevania 2-pack, or Gunstar Super Heroes) and wait to purchase Advance Wars DS some other day? (I've seen several copies of it in the area.) Or will it offer a considerably more entertaining experience than AWDS should I choose to open it?

Well, I'm a AW whore, so take this with a grain of salt.

I <3 AW-DS like it were my lover, girlfriend, and wife all at once. I have 199 / 300 medals, and am on the verge of beating a 6th time (3 on normal, 3 on hard).

Playing the 2nd one first would give you a better head start and understanding of the game play and CO powers. Since in AW-DS you have can have two screens in some battles, and up to SIX characters to control, it can be a bit daunting as you try and figure out th ebest skills / CO powers to pair up.

Amazing game either way. I've loved all the AW games, even way back when their great gran pappy went by the name of Military Madness.

I'd say keep it sealed and move on. AW and AW2 are pretty similar.

I liked AW2 better than AW-DS. DS is just so overdone with the dual CO's Tag Powers. The right combination just makes you utterly unbeatable when you get your Tag power, so the game loses a lot of strategy.

The earliest game in the genre is actually Famicom Wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famicom_Wars), if you want to be picky.

Say, is Advance Wars DS really worth all that much these days? As I said, there are still several copies of it in my area, but I keep hearing stories about it being worth an astonishing amount of money. It still only seems to get reasonable prices on eBay, though.

Its seeming to hold steady in the 34-45 range depending on the bidder and the way the wind is blowing. The fact that its price is still at 'retail' price means alot. There arn't all that many DS games that command any real value.

i liked the original advance wars the most... teh rest got needlessly complicated. you can always d/l the rom and test out which you like best before opening up that copy. however AW2 even sealed is very cheap.
