Right! Holy Diver... he'd go nuts for that game over the name alone.

i got pretty good luck looking on ebay for famicom, if you can wade through the screen after screen of crappy sup famicom overpriced garbage you can sometimes find sellers with large piles of famicom games listed poorly at 1$ each (thats how i got several hundred fami games over the years cheap) if you're patient you can get some really rare and the ocational fun game that way,

I'm suprised nobody mentioned Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti. I LOVE that game, and it's easy enough to understand, even with zero english text.
Also, the Nekketsu games are very, very good, especially "Ike Ike Nekketsu Hockey Bu Subette Koronde Dai Rantou" which is a violent super deformed version of Hockey, and "Downtown Special - Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugou!", which is the sequel to River City Ransom.
Other games worthy of note are Arkanoid 2, Twinbee 1 2 & 3, Hyper Olympics, Shufflepuck Cafe (expensive this one), Rolling Thunder, Pac-Land, and Circus Charlie
Also, Alien Syndrome, Afterburner, Space Harrier, Klax, and Fantasy Zone were never officially licensed in the US, but the famicom versions were, and are very cool conversions.
And...of course, the Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 is a must-have if you can find it at a reasonable price.

Agreed..hard as balls though it's like irem went crazy when they made the game.
Still what i'll recomend are a few titles.
Contra(The little extras in it are great)
Akumajou Densetsu(I still think it's better then the u.s version of CV3)
The Goonies (Sure it's loosey base of the movie still a good lincense game)

I's suggest
Battle City (very simple, but one of the best cooperative Famicom games)
Warpman (simplistic shooter)
Sky Force (better then Top Gun for sure)
Kid Niki II (a.k.a Kaiketsu Yancha Maru 2: Karakuri Land)
Kid Niki III (Kaiketsu Yancha Maru 3: Taiketsu! Zouringen)
Magic Jewelry (a.k.a. Columns)
Mappy (only if you like games like Pac Man)
Moon Crystal (solid platformer)
Quarth (puzzle game + shoot'em up=awesome)
Puyo Puyo
Adventure Island 4 (text shouldn't interrupt you)

Check out any of the Dragonball Z card RPG games if you already know the story to DBZ, and I have to reinforce the choice of Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffitti. Amazing game in the Super Deformed style.

Might as well get Kirby's Avalanche. ;)
But yeah, Twinbee sounds like a good choice. They always look fun and have only heard good things about the series.

And then he'd need to buy a FamiCom Disk System, and a toploader to play it on... or, worse, a OG FamiCom.
crisis force: great shooter
Damn, beat me to it.
Crisis Force is a MUST. Bad-ass shooter from Konami. Very impressive considering it was on NES.

You can't go wrong with Hebereke and Gimmick! Classic Sunsoft music, beautiful graphics, and a good challenge with lots of exploration invoved in both games.
Hebereke, by the way, has the awesomest title ever. It means "really really drunk" in Japanese.
Some other fun titles are Bio Senshi Dan, Ninja Jajamaru Ginga Daisakusen, and Power Blazer, all of which allllmost got released on the NES (the last one did, altered, as Power Blade.)
Tetrastar is also pretty impressive. On the FDS, Arumana no Kiseki, Ai Senshi Nicol, Falsion, and Vs. Excitebike are must-haves.
