Anybody swapped a CRT screen to an LCD screen in an arcade cabinet. HAPP sells this one:

Its about twice the price as the comparable CRT, but being an LCD its a ton lighter and should suffer a lot less from possible burn-in. Any thoughts?

Hm, as a knee-jerk reaction, would there be any possible lag issues with twitchy shooters or competition-grade tournament fighters to worry about?

my biggest concern would be that an lcd isnt going to produce as authentic a picture. the dot pitch it going to be too low producing a sharp image that clearly defines pixels when you want them all to kind of blur together. besides that theres the issue of the screens Geometry which would be thrown off slightly by a flat screen instead of the traditional concave crt screen but if you can live with these issues and the price tag it should work just fine. depending on what your hooking it into you may need to convert the video signals but seeing as its designed for this purpose you might have native inputs for what your working with on it.

I'm thinking about making a custom mini cabaret cabinet for DK/DK Jr. with a video inverter board to negate the requirement for the specialized Nintendo monitor and was just thinking if starting from scratch why not use a nice fancy new technology LCD vs. an old-school curved CRT. The monitor is made for dual resolution (CGA or VGA) and has a response time of 4.5ms. Plus it only weighs 5 lbs. which should help with the overall weight of the unit. I've recently modded a ColecoVision home console with a VGA output converted from the component video outputs of the VDP and when displayed on a newer VGA monitor, looks a hell of a lot better than I've ever seen it on a TV screen so I don't know if the dot pitch would be a problem or not. It would be nice to see if anybody has any personal experience before I spend the cash.

SWEET!!!
Will those work on pre-JAMMA games? My Pac-Man monitor has some serious burn-in, and CRT's are just a pain to replace.
I'm still using the original Electrohome monitor from 1980.

Serious question: Does burn in matter on a game like Pac Man where the background never changes anyway? Is it really noticeable during the intermissions?

Not really... the background is always black, and the burn in doesn't really affect your ability to see the maze :P . I personally don't like how LCDs look in arcade games... it's not that the quality is low, it just doesn't have the authentic feel of the arcade.

It's pretty bad. The guy I bought it from had it as Ms. Pac-Man.
All you can see is the Ms. Pac maze(s), and it's really burnt in there good.

I'd consider it, if they weren't so damn expensive. I just got a 17" for my PC, which was a little over $100, so paying 4x for a 19" is hellastupid :)
You gotta shop around more. TigerDirect has a 19" for $149 (Link (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3120552&Sku=H94-1911))
