View Full Version : Introducing... SashimiGames.com (AKA My New Online Game Store)

I wasn't quite sure where to put this thread, but I've seen a couple of other guys starting threads about their new brick-and-mortar stores. Well, this one is a little different, but I thought I'd introduce my online store here and then maybe post updates here or start up another single thread in the Marketplace section.

http://www.sashimigames.com

I always thought it would be really cool and fun to own a brick-and-mortar store, but I have a day job and just can't devote all of my time to being at a store as B&M requires. Add to the fact that it's a VERY risky investment these days and I decided to go the internet only route, especially since...

...the existing online US game stores I have seen just aren't very good, IMHO. Poorly stocked, badly organized, outrageous prices for incomplete games, absolutely NO indication of the condition of the item you will receive or what is included, full of busy graphics, etc. The EBGames/Gamestop store is abysmal for used games these days. Most of the time, you risk paying for a scratched up disc with no original packaging that may or may not work and they have totally abandoned older platforms. The only online game stores I currently admire are the Asian stores like Play-Asia, YesAsia, etc. but of course the big distinction is they only primarily serve up import titles. That also leaves Ebay which can be very hit or miss regarding what you actually get in the mail and there is always the risk of getting burned.

My tradebox was getting way too big as was my collection, so I decided to throw up the contents of my tradebox on a quickie online store. The results were good enough that I decided to go all out and form a nice site design, start to integrate my collection into my inventory, and take lots and lots and lots of pictures.

This is pretty much the angle I took in creating my site in response to my above complaints about what is out there:

1. The site is FAST. Minimalist design, no bombardment of banner ads or animated GIFs. Simple, yet I think somewhat attractive look, it pretty much
showcases the games themselves.

2. Pretty much every single item for sale has a large, clear picture of the actual game you are getting. This is one of my big differentiators, it's time consuming, but I really wanted to give the customer the sense of almost being able to handle it in a store. I also have a large picture of the front artwork for examination and soon I will have the back artwork for all of the games as well.

3. Every single item is condition graded, honestly and critically. I'm tough on grading my games and if I say everything is A+, it probably looks like it just came out of the shrinkwrap or very close to it. Again, no surprises for the customer. When you are buying an expensive older game (or even a cheaper one!) who want to be unpleasantly surprised with a banged up or incomplete copy?

4. Everything listed as In Stock is actually In Stock. I frickin' HATE buying something from a site and then they come back and tell me that they only update their inventory every once in a while and they are out of most things.

5. Shipping costs are very fair, mostly the actual cost or just above cost and that goes for international as well. I ship worldwide and I ship daily.

6. My game selection is head and shoulders above every other site I have seen as far as quality titles. Not a bunch of commons and junk NOS games that stores could never unload in the first place. The vast majority of my items are complete and in collector-quality condition.

I still have several thousand games I am working to add to the site, as well as restocking stuff that sells out. I am just about to start moving into current-gen stuff as well, you will start to see Xbox 360 and Wii titles appearing within the next few weeks. I really want to become the go-to site for QUALITY used video games on the web, and for people who CARE about the condition of their games.

http://www.sashimigames.com

Although this site has been up for a while now, I didn't want to announce it to the community at-large until I was ready and had a selection I was proud of. I would really like to hear any feedback or suggestions from the community as I highly value the opinions of the membership here. Thanks for reading a long post! :)

Congrats on a great design... the layout is very easy to navigate and the pictures are fantastic. I like to see what I'm buying.

You can tell these games come from a collectors... lots of complete games.

Prices are kind of high, though. I suppose that's the trade-off for knowing you'll get a game in good condition from a reputable seller.

Good luck.

I'm liking the site too. Prices are fair, and for the work you put into it, they deserve that much. Your site addresses all the problems I've had with buying used games from stores online. While I'll stick to eBay for casual deal hunting, if there's a game I need in a pinch, I'll go to your site first. Congrats on the great site!

Thanks! Yeah, that's totally what I'm aiming for. You won't see a bunch of beat up stuff on my site, and if it does have any flaws it will be noted in the condition grading and/or in the large, clear picture.

I think the prices are quite fair in context. It is a LOT of work taking all of the pictures. My prices are right in line with the Ebay pricing for near mint items (which most of my stuff is, and I price down if the condition is less than near mint) with the bonus that you know exactly what you are getting, it will ship fast, no rip-off shipping rates, and one other thing that I neglected to mention compared to Ebay or other stores: my packaging is TOP NOTCH. You will NEVER get a cardboard-packaged game (GBA, SNES, N64, etc.) in a flimsy mailer!

Nice job secretvampire! I'm loving it
Thanks, man! :)

How does the inventory / cart / payment system work? Do you go through a merchant who provides you the setup?

Nope. I purchased a third-party shopping cart, but I did all the setup as well as some heavy modifications to get it the way I wanted. I am actually a software developer for my day job, so this wasn't a huge deal. Currently the shopping cart hooks through a credit card processor, I will probably try to add PayPal and Google Checkout in the near future as well.

The all-in-one merchant solutions out there are total ripoffs, with the amount they take in commissions and fees they are worse than Ebay from what I can tell. Plus, I have complete control over my environment.

Authorize.net for the credit card processor, they are fairly popular. The inventory is easy enough, but be aware it has taken me hundreds if not 1000+ hours setting up everything you see on the site and entering the stock the way I wanted it. This has been done on countless nights and weekends over the course of 1.5 years.

I still have a great deal of stock to add as well as other enhancements I want to make to the site!

Thanks! Yep, I don't have a "store" on Ebay as those are also total ripoffs in my opinion, but I do sell auction-style on Ebay as "sashimigames".

Cool! Yeah, I just looked and saw your username, you will enjoy the Castlevania game, it's in great shape. :) An open question to you and other citizens of Europe and Asia and beyond, what are some of the best online hangouts in your respective countries for gamers? I would love to invite more international customers to my store, it's a fantastic time for those overseas to take advantage of a historically CRAP-valued US dollar.

great selection of games. but i feel most are overpriced.

My quick browse through the Saturn selection left me with the same impression.
Specifically addressing the Saturn games first, I just did a look through. Everything looks pretty darn fair to me as most of the games are in near mint condition and are pretty close , the only ones that are a wildcard are that some of the higher-end games on the Saturn (Dragon Force, Albert Odyssey, etc.) fluctuate WILDLY in price over the course of a year. Dragon Force often goes from selling at $50 to sometimes selling over $100 at certain points in the year, same situation with Albert and some of the others. Perhaps I will need to re-visit my pricing on this particular set of games more often to keep pace with the market swings.

In a more general sense, I'll try to explain my pricing model. I sincerely hope this doesn't come off as sounding defensive or annoyed at all, because I don't feel that way and people are free to question the way I do things, I believe in being as transparent as possible in my business practices which is why I'm so into the condition grading and pictures and such.

I am used to going into B&M retro game stores and seeing prices anywhere from 25-50%+ above mine for complete copies, often in lesser condition OR I am used to going to some game stores and seeing them charge the same as my prices for cartridge or disc only copies.

My biggest competition is obviously Ebay, and even though I feel my prices are right near Ebay values, there is just no way I could BEAT the Ebay prices outright and still provide all of the extra service and advantages I do over Ebay:

1. Again, all of my highly detailed pictures which are very time consuming.
2. A consistent, tough condition grading system.
3. A knowledge of how to package items well, something that is sorely lacking by many sellers unfortunately.
4. Daily shipping.
5. Shipping rates at cost or very close to it, not increasing the price through stealth with ridiculous shipping rates like many Ebay sellers.
6. A solid, reliable reputation with no danger of getting burned. I've been somewhat active on gaming forums for nearly five years now and a member of Ebay for ten years. I try to take care of every customer and provide timely responses to every email. If I misrepresented the condition (which has never happened yet), send it back.
7. A large selection that makes ordering multiple items much more cost effective than Ebay, and my selection will only get larger.

I recognize the fact that I'm not going to appeal to everybody, especially a portion of the membership of this site. There are some very savvy folks here that are willing to wait months or years to find a way-below-market deal on particular games they are looking for to add to their collection, I understand that. But for those who may only buy a few games a year, or are looking for something from their childhood, or want to make sure they are really getting something in appropriate condition for their collection without playing the Ebay lottery, I want to provide a effortless and enjoyable shopping experience. I have loved just talking to people who have written me just to talk about games or games they might like regardless of whether they wind up buying or not. It's a hell of a good time so far.

I'm sure I will enjoy the game. I was going to buy it as a factory sealed version since one seller had it for 70 dollars or so and kept talking about international shipping being available. But turned out she doesn't do international shipping, go figure. Since FS isn't such a big deal for me personally, I'm glad I noticed the game. I got it for cheaper, in great condition and I don't have to worry about the packaging being crap. Buing from DP members is another great plus too since the people in here are great.

At least in Finland, most gamers are new gen players and hang around game mag sites. I know a few old school and more than generally interested places so I'll spread the word. Most of my friends are gamers and I do believe they'll be happy about your store since many have crappy experiences in online shopping.

I know a few game series specific sites that I'm a part of too so I'll try to get you some customers. :D

Hmmmm...let me ponder how to do this. I would probably set it up in a way for only established members to get it, I don't want it to be abused by people just signing up for a discount. I will certainly try to make this happen soon though.

Thanks! I tried to put a lot of thought into it and worked with a freelance designer for some consultation as well. There are still things that bother me with the shopping cart (the search capabilities and search results layout being my current biggest pet peeves), but I'll try to get around to fixing them myself when I have the time. Okay, I take that back. The prices for the GB and GBC games are ludicrous. 49.99 for a pre-owned Final Fantasy adventure? WTF?

I was specifically interested in the GBA games but I can't pay that much. Still, it's hard to find older GBA games that are complete and in good shape. Lots of the ones off e-bay are pirates or in poor shape. I'll buy them loose at Gamestop.

I looked at the site a few days ago when you first posted it and was immediately turned off by your prices. It seems obvious to me that you used your own collection as stock because the game's aren't priced to sell. It's more like the attitude "I'll part with my Panzer Dragoon Saga if I could get $180 for it..." But then I collect expensive games, so maybe other genres are more affordable.

The layout is real nice, colors match well, good selection of games (not a pit of bland sports titles), decent postings and information about the games and best of all: no adverts everywhere. However, as many have already stated, the prices are high; super collector high to be exact. It's understandable if you can back yourself with real quality service and I'm sure people will buy certain games over time. Maybe you should add a feedback section to gain trust of net surfers looking for collector condition games.

I think I've said everything I'm going to say on my pricing, but I'll leave it with this: what you would pay for a particular item does not make it the market value. Read that again. If I tried to please everybody, everything in my store would be $5, customers would be very happy, and my store would close. Some of the very games mentioned in the last few posts have sold in the recent past at the very prices listed. The games are selling well at the current prices.

I created this thread to talk more about design and functionality and such. I'm guessing that many of those complaining have never run a business, and I guess I have to keep that in mind. I don't see the other B&M store owners in their own threads here at DP getting flak over pricing, but that is probably only since you can't see their prices online. I am cheaper than every B&M retro store I've ever been to, I'll accept that maybe I haven't found the magical bargain retro store out there that is the exception.

I was specifically interested in the GBA games but I can't pay that much. Still, it's hard to find older GBA games that are complete and in good shape. Lots of the ones off e-bay are pirates or in poor shape. I'll buy them loose at Gamestop.
Well, I think you just said it best. My GBA section is actually doing quite well since it's no fun trying to sort out real games from the bootleg crap on Ebay and good luck finding them in Gamestop since they THREW OUT all of their boxes. Some people like to collect complete games.

Where's the madden football...just kidding, anyway nice looking site I'll have to keep it in mind down the road

That's a thought. For alphabetical, you mean break down some subcategories by sections, like A-G, H-P, Q-Z, etc? That's not too hard. The genre would be a little more work since the shopping cart doesn't track it as one of the default values, but I could probably add that functionality if I needed to.

I know the browsing isn't ideal, I need to at least tweak the paging interface at the bottom.

That is a good idea, I would keep it segregated from my other nice stock. Probably no pictures and just condition ratings, otherwise it wouldn't be worth my time. It takes a lot of effort to add a particular item for the first time. I'll also have to put this on the to-do list for later as I've still got some 2000+ (and growing) non-common items I need to add first and it's going to take me months.

Congratulations on launching the store. Many of us dream to, few do. Might I suggest you add a FAQ somewhere on the site? Just so new visitors who come to the site OUTSIDE DP may see "what you're all about."

Set up a mock Q&A where you address various issues on your site.

Q: Nice site! But I feel some prices are high

A: ________

Q: What is the shipping range/policy? Will my games be in boxes or bubble mailers?

A: ______

etc.

It may give new visitors more comfort in dealing with you. BTW, you don't take paypal? Good luck with the store :)

Not out-of-the-box with the shopping cart, but I should be able to add it easily. And yeah, come to think of it, I'm not crazy about always having to navigate all of the pages at 12 a pop either....good call!

Yeah, it's a good idea. A lot of the information you just touched on is on the top of the Terms and Conditions page, but it would probably be helpful to break it out a bit and also make it more prominent.

I have not yet set up PayPal integration. I'm still debating it actually, I have such a love/hate relationship with PP from my Ebay dealings, I kind of like only going the credit card route. Don't have to deal with as many jokers that way, but I might still set it up. I actually do PayPal transactions if somebody specifically mails me about it, I set up a manual transaction outside of the shopping cart.

Paypal sucks. Avoid using them if you can. They enjoy shafting the seller. If you take credit card directly its pretty much the same as Paypal except for the one guy in ten who wants to pay out of his bank account.
Make sure to send with delivery confirmation or registered or whatnot. Credit card companies might not be so draconian as Paypal but you still need to be able to fight a dirty buyer.
Ignore people complaining about prices. They just want to get a good deal. Never sell less than eBay, as that's the bare minimum and means you have to deal with sketchy sellers who might have conditioned a beat disc as "Mint" because they were stupid.

Good points. I do frickin' HATE how they will take the buyer's word with zero proof 99% of the time. "Oh, the charge was 'unauthorized'? Sure, chargeback!" Whether that is true or not.

Awesome, really glad to hear it, HYB!

Just FYI to everyone, my Wii and 360 sections will be going up after the New Year, though they will be relatively small to start with until I can ramp up. My PS1 section just hit 300 titles though. :)

Hah, I'm guessing you meant Lynx? ;) I have a ton of Lynx games (and Game Gear, Jaguar, etc.), they probably won't go up for a few months though. I'm concentrating on expanding the very popular systems first like PS1, Dreamcast, etc. (I have LOADS more than what is currently listed) and adding the more niche systems as time permits.

Back up and running after the holiday break. Just put in my fledgling Wii and 360 sections, also added a bunch of DS and PSP games. I will be further expanding my newer gen stuff in the next months and I still have a TON of older stuff to add. So much work to do!

Good point. I'll whip up something a bit more eye-catching later when I get a few minutes.

Cool store, is there a way I can sort by price? And the other suggestions of this thread to browse more than 12 items at a time.

Like a lot of people here my initial gut reaction was your prices were a little high. After a few minutes of browsing your store, and then reading this thread, I understand why. It seems like you are doing an excellent job of showing exactly what the condition of a game is.

A few other suggestions:

Take a picture of the top and back of cartridge games. I know you're already putting in a crazy amount of work per-game, and this isn't necessary, but what you are already doing is not entirely necessary, and you seem intent on offering a premium service with your site.

Also, I think you're skewing your game condition a little high. You list Dragon Warrior IV as A+, but it clearly has some writing near the bottom and scratches. I'm not complaining, I think it's awesome that you have the pictures like this so we can actually tell, I'm just pointing out that your condition ratings might be a little high.

I really like the idea of a more collector oriented online store. I'm starting to hit the point where I'm replacing games I own in poor condition with better condition copies.

I have purchased a few games from Jason (like 1,000 usd i think) and i can fully recommend SASHIMI GAMES.

The selection is very nice and many games have lower prices than ebay and you can buy them together. One of my best purchases was a Chrono Trigger complete and mint along splatterhouse 3 !!.

It's one of the few places where you can pay directly with your credit card or paypal and has that kind of system coverage. Shipping is very fast and very reliable, i am in Mexico.

He is kind enough to combine shipping and payment from its ebay account and the sashimi store.

Best Wishes, Man !!!!!

Nice site, do you ship internationally? I've had trouble finding reliable, good shops online.

Also Harvest Moon: Back to Nature $129.99? I know it's not the commonest game but it rarely goes for more than £20-£30 over here, I'm not bashing (I already own the game) I was just curious. Also am very jealous of your N64 and Snes versions!

This is the first time I'm seeing this thread, and I just wanted to say that I think the website is phenomenal. The selection is great and the prices are very fair, especially for those who look for quality over quantity.

I hope you're doing well with it, and I will be buying shortly.

Let me add on to the great design pileup here (Which, by the way, is my degree so at least a college edumacated designer agrees with you).

Only one slight thing I would add which I couldn't immediately find was a way to sort the 'condition' of stuff... or to find systems as opposed to games. By condition I mean "new and sealed" vs. used.

These are both minor points considering I can actually figure out *where stuff is* on your site, which is awesome. As you said, a lot of online retailers have rough rough design on their site.

Tweak the two things I mentioned and you've got an A+ site... and will probably buy from you whenever I actually have money again. :/

Will there plans for sales like 20% off or B2G1 in the near future? It's a great way to attract new customers and show off the quality of your products.
