Time to talk about the best racing game ever created, programmed in part by the masterful Ed Logg, who also played a heavy hand in developing the original San Fransisco Rush. I prefer this style of racing game over the overrated, yet extremely popular sim style of racing game such as the Gran Turismo series -_- .
I've not had the pleasure of playing Rush:2049 on a dedicated cab at the arcades, but I'm am consistently amazed at the performance of the game on the N64, this is one of the best programmed games on the machine IMO, alongside Starcraft64 and Perfect Dark. By best programmed I mean that the programmers used the full potential of the N64 Hardware, again only in my modest opinion as I'm no programmer. I have all 3 N64 Rush games, and R:2049 is easily the best in any category you match it up against, be it graphics, sound, and especially Level design. Rush 2 wasn't developed with Ed Loggs help, and it wasn't an arcade release, it was an N64 exclusive, but it didn't improve the gameplay mechanics at all over the original SFR. Even the HUD is exactly the same as the original. The good thing about Rush 2 is the inclusion of the Stunt Track, and Tons of cars and options to go with them. That Stunt Track is amazing, and is more fun still than the 4 new ones featured in Rush:2049.
I don't know what it is about these games that I love so much. I rented San Fransisco Rush for my N64 soon after it was released. I read a huge preview in a short lived magazine called Q64(cost me $9.99!). The preview got my attention, so I test drove the game for a night. Took the game back, didn't really ponder too much whether I liked it or not. 3 days later I got this urge to play it again, so I bought the game at full retail of $59.99(still have the reciept) and never looked back. I love getting all that air! People think Tony Hawk Pro Skater has Air, San Fransicso Rush games GOT AIR BABY! And the Shortcuts, it's so exhilirating to clear one of those crazy shortcuts at full speed, getting air and whatnot, moving you from a lowly 5th place into 1st! I still play any one of my Rush games on a regular basis, but I must say that 2049 is the best one. The shortcuts are harder to do, you have more control over your car thanks to the Wings, and the graphics are amazing. Plus it has the cool features of Rush 2 incorporated. I really wanted to talk about these games because I don't feel this series gets the respect it deserves, and is often overlooked. I don't think it should be overlooked by any of us here, since its programmed by the Classic game programmer Ed Logg.
I wanted to ask people who have both home versions of Rush 2049 (N64, DC) if you've compared the two and which one is better, even though I would assume the DC version is graphically superior, that doesn't necessarily mean the gameplay is better. Are all the coins in the same place? Are all the cars the same, or are there more options?
