Still trying to solve this problem for myself, this one seems most promising so far.

Take a top loading NES (the real one), have someone with skill (not me in this case) to A/V mod it and make the hole in the top big enough for a 72-60 pin converter. Done correctly, you'd have a a/v capable, NES that does both US and Japanese games.

The only thing better would be to find a way to make it do ALL regions, but I'd settle for that.

So, is it doable?

or you could just buy a messiah system?

The best solution is still a toaster and a famicom converter found in an old gyromite cart.

That has been the coolest solution as then you may say your import plays on any NES. Cart converters and modding the console are okay options, just not as nice.

Actually, the ultimate NES/Famicom system is an AV Famicom with FDS and an NES>Famicom converter. Not only can you play pretty much everything made for both systems, you can also use almost any NES or Famicom controller/accessory.

Agreed it's been the prefect setup for me for a year now.

True, I stand corrected.

Speaking of which, I read somewhere that those old converters-from-a-cart weren't all they were cracked up to be: since they originally fit around a Famicom board and not an actual Famicom cart, they don't always fit correctly, or something. (At least, they certainly lack that convenient ribbon that can be used to pull it out of the NES if it gets stuck.) Is that the case?

That's true. Some games require you to shave off the corners of the pcb to get it to fit right.

It doesn't have a lockout chip. Therefore, almost all European games can run on the system, if not all.

Tristar with a pin converter would be pretty cool but it doesn't add controller ports.

The Tristar also reportedly uses inadequate NES-on-a-chip technology.

Yeah. I was thinking more style over functionality though. The word "ultimate" always gets me in the mood to pour on the gravy.
