Eh...there's some, but not enough to make it worthwhile in my opinion, and I'm a big SMS fan. I don't know since I never bothered going down that road. Maybe someone else can chime in.

There actually was an adapter available for a while, but it's no longer made. You can probably build your own, but I'm not sure it's worth the trouble.

You might find some more useful info here:

You may want to try posting on the SMS Power forums.

Wait, I'm confused. The Mark III IS the same thing as the SMS. Games play on the system...

Is this a question about regional differences?

The cartridges are different and so are the pin layouts of the cartridges.

Indeed you are.

I already answered that question.

To elaborate a little, I believe US/EU SMS systems run a country code check (and checksum) in the BIOS, and so fail if a Japanese Mark III game is somehow running on it. The Japanese Mark III/SMS doesn't have this country lockout, so that's why adaptors exist for it.

It also makes much more sense, since the Japanese SMS died early, and thus Japanese SMS freaks were importing EU/US games, many of which were actually made in Japan but only released in the West.

I'd actually go for getting a Japanese Master System, since it's got some built-in goodies that the Mark III doesn't have, like FM sound and a 3-D glasses jack. Get the ToToTEK adapter (which is about $15 before shipping), and you've got yourself the ultimate SMS.

Huh? There is no Super Pitfall for the SMS.

I always got a kick, when using the Power Base Convertor on the JPN MD1 and seeing the Mark III logo before the game starts :)

There is a Pitfall or Super Pitfall card for SG-1000/Mk. III

There is a Pitfall or Super Pitfall card for SG-1000/Mk. III

i believe it is a port of the sega arcade port of pitfall II

that should confuse everyone a bit more :)

That is correct...to use any kind of adapter with a North American SMS, you'd have to alter the system BIOS as well.

Indeed it is...it has some elements from the first two Pitfall games, plus some original content. It's actually called Pitfall II, but 'Super Pitfall' is probably a better description (much moreso than the awful NES game).

Are PAL SMS games playable on the US/NTSC SMS system?

For the most part, yes.

For the most part, yes.

Why only for the most part? What is different, what games do not work?

The PAL/NTSC difference causes some graphical problems with a few games (very few). I can't even remember which ones, you'd have to check the SMS FAQ. For the most part, you won't have any problems playing European carts...the problem games are barely worth a mention.

There are some gem Mark III games, to be sure. I really like Alex Kidd: BMX Trials and Woody Pop.

All US games will work on Euro SMS consoles, the problem comes with the US system not being able to play about 5 or so Euro games. From what I remember, these are the games:

James Bond 007: The Duel
Prince Of Persia
Jungle Book
Back to the Future III

That sounds right. IIRC, there are some additional titles (New Zealand Story) that will not work on the Master Gear Converter.

I used to have James Bond: The Duel and Jungle Book an dused to play them on my U.S. Master System (with Hang On built in), so they do work. What I've read is that there's supposed to be graphical glitches and timing problems. I did notice some graphics glitches in The Jungle Book, but I was never really convinced that they weren't just because of poor programming, especially since I never noticed anything the matter in James Bond at all, but I guess I'll take other people's word on that one.

I can't speak for Back To The Future III or Prince Of Persia.

The Codemasters games also won't work on U.S SMS consoles. I also have James Bond and Jungle Book and they run kosher.

I must disagree. The Sonic games alone are well worth the effort of importing titles from the U.K. Plus there's Asterix, Chuck Rock and the Bart Simpson vs. games. Then there are Brazilian only releases as well that are real gems. In fact there were a few of them on ebay lately but unfortunately they all went for a tidy sum. Especially Sonic Blast which cleared over $100.

Huh? I said the problem games (meaning the ones that won't work) are not worth mentioning. Yes, there are many great European SMS titles.
