I sometimes mis-remember things, but I'm pretty sure I remember playing a NES side scrolling shooter where you are a submarine. I believe there were power ups. It seems like it had pretty tight controls. I know I loved it while playing at a friend's house. So much so that we didn't stop playing when it was time for dinner and my friend's dad ended up ripping the NES out, breaking the RF cord.

I really don't think it was The Hunt for Red October, as I don't recall the info display that game has, and it seemed much more cartoonish (yellow sub, colorful fish).

To be honesy, I would've said, "The Hunt for Red October," because I never heard of that one....until today.

Same here, and I've *played* the game. Okay, so I've technically heard of it, I just had no recollection of the name. I do know I was completely in love with the game for the one afternoon I got to play it. But I was at most in 5th grade, so my judgement may have been poor.
