ok I put a new 72 pin into my toaster-style nes and it worked great but then i put a dirty game in and had to clean it. i was being lazy so i just stuck the nes cleaner in there but noticed it was hard to pull out so i looked and the pins looked like they had been run through a garbage disposal. I bent them back, but i was wondering if there was any way that i could stop this from happening, i mean sometimes i don't feel like taking the whole thing apart just to play 10 mins of smb with my brother.

So you mean to say you used an official cart holder cleaner? ( The thing that you insert like a game ) to clean the slot after you played a "dirty game" ??

Those cleaner carts can snag on the pins sometimes, as you've realized. I think most of the problem is due to how old and worn they get, even unopened ones, as the fibers break down. Of course the obvious answer is to clean your games before inserting them, then you won't have a problem to begin with. As I said in this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109663), a quick and dirty way of cleaning the ZIF connector without disassembling the NES is to take a cotton swab coated in alcohol, apply a coating of it to the connectors of a clean cartridge, then insert and remove the cartridge in the system. Then take a clean cotton swab and run it along the cartridge connectors to pick up the gunk.
