I have a confession to make. Today's random game was actually the 4th game the generator presented. The first four were really obscure. I'll sometimes post an obscure one anyway, but these were really unlikely to have been played by more than 2 or 3 people. So we got this on the 4th try.

A brilliant two player game, Sea Battle is one of those games that to people who put some serious time into it turns up some of the funniest stories I've ever heard. I'll see if I can get Sean Kelly to post his thoughts on this here, like many others, he feels that he is (or at least WAS) unbeatable at this game.

So what do you think of Sea Battle? What was your strategy for winning? What was your "Achilles heel" (c'mon, even Sean has one)? Tell us a story about your best opponent, your best game, or your first impressions. Write your own mini-review here.

DP Guide sez:

Sea Battle (Intellivision, by Mattel/INTV) $2/R1
Designed by Ken Smith. Rivaled in popularity only by the likes of Major League Baseball. Here's another title "designed around" the Intellivision's strengths. The highly scaled-down Atari 2600 Sea Battle (aka High Seas) debuted at Classic Gaming Expo 2000. SANTULLI SLANT: An Intellivision classic, unfortunately no good unless you have someone to play with. Oh sure, you can play a one player game against the "other player" even though there's no one manning the controls. that'll show him! Blammo! Got your Destroyer with another mine! Ha! Didn't see that coming, didja? DIDJA!? Part strategy, part action, and a much more intense head to head contest than Street Fighter II could ever be. [Gr: 6, So: 8, Ga: 8, Ov: 7] c1980 Mattel. #1818.

I could never get into this game. My friend had an Intellivision with this game, but I never liked it. Early strategy games just don't do it for me, and I pretty much hate anything involving ships or naval combat (Final Legacy being the exception).

What an awesome game! One of the best early strategy games for sure. I loved having the different types of ships, and their various abilities. The graphics were fine, nothing special, and the sound was average, but the gameplay was where the game excelled. Other drawbacks were the necessity of the overlay, and the lack of a single-player option.

Why didn't Mattel make a one-player version of this one? Too tough to program the AI?

BTW Joe: I was waiting for the admission of guilt that the random game generator wasn't working. :)

GREAT game, loved this one, took a little too long sometimes, and it was hard to get 2 evenly matched players, but STILL a great game :)
