Dunno if this has been done before, but yesterday I was thinking about what the worst games of all time were. Not just worst game for a certain system, but of all time over all systems (and arcade games). If you start considering all the systems and arcade games made there are alot to choose from, but some games are just so bad they still stand out in a crowd of 10,000+.

So lets hear some suggestions. I'd start with an old and a new game:

Ssssnake (2600)
Superman 64 (N64)

I always hated Low-G man on the NES. There are probably worse games but I hate this one sooooo much.

Years ago we dedicated an entire issue to this very subject. It's a topic that's near and dear to me.

http://www.digitpress.com/dpsightz/covers/dpcov_26.gif

In that issue:

Sea Hunt review:
http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/seahunt.htm

Gorf (5200) review:
http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/gorf.htm

Super Pitfall review:
http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/suprpitf.htm

Lots more. Also I still love this feature that Sean "Seanbaby" Reily did for us a few years ago about the worst NES games:

Super Play Action Football for the SNES was an absolute crapper of a game. How in the hell can you get the NFL license for team representation and not get the NFLPA license? Touchdown by #34 of the Buffalo Bills is all the excitment you'll get from scoring... if you manage to score. Let's not forget how Nintendo forgot to list the options in the play book. At your disposal is over two dozen plays, none of which you know the name to. That 45 degree angle view of the playing field doesn't help matters either.

Yep I have that issue, but as I recall it tended to concentrate on classic (and neo-classic) systems. I'm looking for a list that includes everything from the Channel F to the X-Box.

Speaking of Channel F, most of those games could fill a list on their own. Not to meantion the Studio II... :/

My problem is, I ALWAYS check reviews and ratings before I get a game, and if it sucks, I don't buy it :) I NEVER take risks unless the game is under $15. So I REALLY can't think of any bad games that I've played.

From what I HAVE played:
Crash Wrath of Cortex (PS2)
Alundra (PS1)
ANY game that I can't play because of red/green colorblindness (DAMN YOU PS Version of puzzle fighter 2, DAMN YOU! And Mad Maestro, why red and green?!? Is there something wrong with the entire OTHER half of the color spectrum?!)

Games that look bad: Zelda for the CD-i

Well, there's my 2 cent's.

Oh I agree with you, Matt. Just pointing out a few items to give people a head start. Believe me, there are loads of shitty games that have come out even since that issue.

.....I liked Urban Champion....... :(

The new Batman game. Dark Vengence or whatever, man is that crap.

And almost all of the Superman games. DC seems to have really bad luck with gaming licenses.

Superman for the N64 by Titus.
E.T. for the 2600... I don't care what anyone says, it is crap.
Pac-Man for the 2600, with flicker so bad it could cause a seizure.
Barbie for the NES... good god, how terrible.
Rex Ronan for the SNES... so bad it woujld make kids take up smoking out of spite.
MK Advance for the GBA Advance... I got it super-cheap from K Mart and I can confirm it's just about the worst fighting game every produced.
Quiz Wiz for the Game.Com... not only is it bad but a LOT of the questions don't even have the correct answers.
Batman & Robin for the Game.Com... blur, thy name be Game.com
Transformers for the Famicom, so fucking hard you'll die two seconds into the first level.

There is a lot more, and more on the way no doubt.

Let us not forget TOTAL RECALL for NES. But that's pretty infamous.
I've always hated Altered Beast on Genesis. Sure, a good way to demonstrate the graphics and sound when it came out in 1989, but GOOD GOD what a dull game. I've long sinced purged my collection of it.

The Star Wars games for SNES--great idea, looked great, I HATED playing them. Like Rush n' Attack all over again. Endless dumb "enemies" coming at you. Cheap-ass. That's just my gaming taste.

Hey, I liked Aludra. :( Had some great puzzles.

Hmm, let's see...The games I tend to dislike the most are the once that are hugely dissapointing (*coughchronocrosscough*), but as far as out-and-out bad goes, I'd have to say Beyond the Beyond. Sweet Cthulhu that game was terrible.

No surprise here, but Spongebob Squarepants for the GameCube. I still have nightmares about the blurry graphics and sluggish controls. Most kid's games are bad, but this is the worst one ever. Thus, I have made it my mission to travel the earth to stop unsuspecting consumers from the purchasing the game...

Oh, and before I forget, Eve of Extinction for PS2. It's like a long tutorial minus the fun.

These aren't bad suggestions, but are they really the worst games of all time? Yeah they all suck pretty hard, but I wouldn't call many of them "The Worst". Well maybe Total Recall... ugh!

Rocketeer for SNES is the absolute worst game ever, in my opinion. Others:

Total Recall (NES)
Ninja (PSX)
Perfect Weapon (PSX)

I know there are many more that I think royally suck, but I just can't think of them at the moment...

No, I'm going to have to insist that MK Advance is the worst game ever made actually. It's the most unplayable, unlogical game ever made. Everything about MK that could possibly go wrong does. You punch straight through people, your weapons go staright through, the sound skips, the amount of damage done is inconsistant, the game freezes at the drop of a hat... some of this shit there is just no excuse for. It's truly pathetic.

My pick is either Preditor for the NES or Journey Escape for the 2600. IMO these manage to be worse than even Super Pitfall.

Hey, I liked, and have beaten Super Pitfall several times. :)

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for the NES - Have you every played this? Did you ever figure out what was going on, or why the townspeople wanted to beat the shit out of you?! Worst game ever.

I can't believe no one has said Shaq Fu. Trash!

The Rise of the Robots games.

Heroes of the Lance for PC.

Charlie
04-18-2003, 03:09 PM
Oh, Action 52 is a classic... 52 games and not one of them is worth * in value. This DUDs for you.

@Port: I think Dr. Jeckel & Mr. Hyde is based on some Japanese anime and not the famous book/movie/play. But yeah, it's pretty terrible.

Total Recall is awful... totally on par with the unplayable shit that Acclaim churned out for the NES. The only good games they released they licensed from other companies (Wizards & Warriors for example).

Super Pitfall isn't so bad... I've certainly played worse.

Journey Escape is my favorite Atari 2600 game, so I am greatly offended at it's mention in this post.

WWE Crush Hour isn't a bad game, it's just dull. At least the play control is good.

The Zelda games for CD-i are hardly bad. People just think they're bad because they aren't true Zelda games. I think Adventures of Link is worse then them (especially Zelda's Adventure, which was awesome).

There is tons of bad games out there, but some of them that would justify the GAMES INDEX OF PROHIBITED AWFUL REJECTED WASTE.
The first 6 winners I remembered:

Total Recall (NES)
ET (2600)
Rise of The Robots (all) - Maybe the 'Eternal Champion'
Dr. Chaos (NES)
Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hide (NES)
Death and Return of Superman (SNES)
Helicopter Rescue! (Odyssey)
The Power of He-Man (Intellivision)

Pyramid for NES: Promising idea, but when you make a Tetris with triangle-based pieces it's all too easy to force players to get breaks in the would-be lines that are literally impossible to fill. No wonder it's an unlicensed game.

I LOVED Friday the 13th for the NES, it's one of my fav games for my little toaster :D I loved Altered Beast too, just for the pure cheese factor, and it cool sounds and music in it.

As for the worst games ever, I have to agree with Superman for the N64, but I'd like to also add Street Fighter 2015 or whatever the number was. I never even got past the first screen, it sucked THAT horribly.

Heroes of the Lance is the only PC game to make this list so far? Egads, people...

I mean, if it's over all systems and all times, then the PC has got to take the cake in terms of awfulness. Some games made for it are so buggy that they crash every few minutes (un-patched Ultima IX, anyone?). What about that absolutely horrendous Survivor game that got released a year or two ago? I'm sure I've barely scratched the surface and there's no way I can even begin to remember all the asinine games I've seen over the years, only to forget about them...

I have a very distinct feeling that the most horrible games of all time on all platforms are so obscure...although there are some obscure ones here now - Toilet Kids for NES? Hahahahahaa

Worst game...

Sega Master System

Well, I'll say that The Cyber Shinobi is by far the worst Sega Master System I've managed to play so far. That's not saying much since I've only played a few, and generally excellent titles at that; my second and third worst games played on the system so far have been Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, in all its unmet potential, and Kenseiden comes in a distant third. Neither even touches the awfulness of The Cyber Shinobi. With that, I hope this is the last time I'll feel pressed to mention that title.

GameBoy Advance

Nothing I've decided to play for this system really falls in this category, but the worst I've seen would be the port of Contra III. Recycling the train level from Contra the Hard Corps isn't good. I'm still not sure, but at the time it seemed to me that Konami was claiming this stage was "designed specifically for the GBA." That, if it's what they were talking about, was a bald faced lie. Oh, and the fact you can sit and bounce weapon capsules into the air without end (they go straight up and come right back down) adds to the mockery of Treasure's last Contra. A shame, really. When you get right down to it, though, this isn't deserving of a place on this list (but I appreciate the opportunity to vent!)

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (2600): Admittedly, I get enthralled for a few minutes because I actually think I comprehend the gameplay - then I mysteriously fall into a hole, despite taking precautions to avoid it - as such, the cart exits the 2600 very quickly.

Hi-Octane (Saturn): A hate it even more so than normal, because it angers me to see such a potentially good game so very badly executed.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (GBC): Boring, difficult, frustrating and unappealing. My hatred for this is intensified since I actually wasted so much time and effort trying to finish it! >:(

No one has mentioned CARMAGADON 64 for the Nintendo 64... I've played almost every N64 game there is, and Carmagadon is WORSE than Superman... seriously!

I just got SIMPSON's WRESTING for the PSone, and it's just as bad as I heard.

MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP for the 32x is simply dreadful... truly terrible music and sound effects couple

COSMIC CARNAGE for the 32x is one of the worst fighting games I have ever played

AUTOBAHM TOKIO is a Japanese racing game for the 3DO that rates as the worst racer I have ever played.

HARD DRIVIN' for the Genny is a big mess... the Genny doesn't do polygons very well!

The Jaguar has too many real duds to list... how about CHECKERED FLAG, FIGHT FOR LIFE, AIR CARS, I-War, and last but certainly not least TREVOR MCFUR IN THE CRESCENT GALAXY (great launch title, Jack)

INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM is a truly bad Nintendo (NES) port of a good arcade game

Another bad PSX game is JUPITER STRIKE. It's an early release shooter with no weapons upgrades and really awful sound effects

The PSX and saturn both got STREET FIGHTER: THE MOVIE, certainly the biggest stain ever on the Street Fighter name.

How about THE CROW, also for PSX and Saturn? This one is unplayable.

Don't get me started on the Sega CD... full motion video plus video game equals stomach flu.

ALF and MORTAL KOMBAT 3 for the Sega Master System are toal shit, and the 20-IN-1 "multicart" packed in with the Sega Master System 3 in Brazil is like a dumbed-down Action 52 (if that's possible.) One endlessly repeating simple song for all 20 games. Great.

These are some of my favorites!

Worst games of all time...Pac-man for the 2600 was a contender but misses out because there WERE worst games released for the Atari (*cough*E.T.*cough*).

A few people have mentioned Rise of the Robots, which I wholeheartedly agree with. I made the mistake of buying it for the PC back in the mid-90's. Terrible game, completely unplayable. Even though I found it in the bargain bin I still felt ripped off.

Almost all of the THQ games for the SNES are contenders. Back in the early 90's, THQ's reputation was so bad that they had to divide the company into separate divisions (like Black Pearl and Malibu Games) just so people wouldn't realize they were buying a THQ game. Race Drivin' is a particular travesty, with both Home Alone games being other noteable mentions for their sheer waste of plastic and silicon.

But, for me, the worst game I've ever, EVER played is...*drum roll*...

Pit Fighter for the SNES

An unbelievably funny game for all the wrong reasons. Appalling graphics, non-existant sound and gameplay so bad you wondered if you'd forgotten to switch the console on. Each fighter had, erm, two moves (punch and kick) and the sprites, although digitized, were tiny pixellized blobs in the middle of the screen. As far I can remember, there was only one background, meaning that each fight (and I use the term loosely) was identical to the last.

Any time you bitch about how bad games are nowadays, how there is just no innovation anymore, spend two minutes revisiting Pit Fighter and you'll realize that even oldies aren't always goldies.

Oberfuhrer Hamm
06-26-2003, 07:17 PM
I usually don't play that many console games anymore, however the worst out of what I played is .... Where's Waldo for the NES.

First off, wtf? A game based on books that only a 3 year old could enjoy?
Second, virtually no variation. Once you have played the game more than three times, you will know exactly where he is every time. -_-
Third, graphics? Gotta like looking at pixellated stick people. >)
Fourth, too easy. Who couldn't beat this game in 2 tries or less?
Fifth, the ending. Waldo goes to the moon. What the hell? :? Not worth playing for.

Need I go on?

One reedeming point about it is that the gameplay is so rediculously simple that it was impossible for it to be flubbed.

Despite that, this game is a waste of time, money, effort, plastoc and silicon. Dont ever play it.

I've never played NES Toilet Kids either but it's title does rather suggest it should be shoved down the crapper. If it really is THAT bad, I'm sure many copies of it were.

A couple more games have sprung to my mind since yesterday. Amazing Tennis for the N64 is a baaaaad sports game. The graphics are shocking, especially since the N64 was capable of producing top notch 3D. The tennis players each contain about 5 polygons each, the crowd and umpire are obviously sprites (since if you see them from the side they look like cardboard cutouts) and the player rosta is just bizarre. No Agassi, Sampras, Rafter, etc. The female rosta is even more embarassing. I hadn't even heard of most of the players (I suspect some of them were fictional...). Finally, the sound is also a disaster zone, with irritating music and terrible synth speech from the umpire, whose repetoire consists of about 4 different phrases which he repeats over...and over...and over...and over...(you get the idea)...again. Oh, and somebody's cell phone ALWAYS rings during EVERY match and the umpire ALWAYS shouts out "Quiet please!". Some cartridges are just begging to be melted down, aren't they?

Family Dog for the SNES...now there's a bad game. Another delight from the creative genius that was THQ back in the early 90's, Family Dog is a jaw-dropping appalling excuse for a "game". The only reason I wouldn't consider it among the worst games of all time is because it was pretty good by THQ's standards. Crap by everyone else's, of course, but when your back catalogue consists of wonders such as Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Race Drivin', Pit Fighter, and The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle and Friends (no joke, that really is a game title)...when your back catalogue looks like that, you have to have one game that might graze the 40% mark (and then only in the official Nintendo Magazine).

I always hated Ultraman for the SNES too, but some people like it and at least it's sort of playable...sort of. It has a couple of nice moments in it... not like Pit Fighter, whose only nice moment comes when you take the cartridge to the local pawn shop or, preferably, when you take a hammer and a blowtorch to it. Now THAT'S satisfying.

I cant believe no one else has posted 'Dragon's Lair' for NES.

All of the other games people posted are at least playable, but Dragon's Lair for the NES is like, utterly impossible. It took me over 30 minutes to get past the 1st level, which is way too long cosidering its only one screen long. This game is soo poorly designed that it is just a total piece of crap. As far as Im concerned, its not even a game.

Dragons Lair has to be in the top 10 worst of all time. I cant think of anything worse.

T*HQ is a publisher, I don't think they actually developed one game0. They only published 1 decent NES game: Jmaes Bond Jr. The only T*HQ game developed by Eurocom.

I second Action 52. Horrible. I swear to this day, that when I started playing it, I had a seizure on it's stupidness.

Also, ET for 2600 is another thing. Very dull when I played it on an emu.

In my physical collection, it's probably Hexen for N64 or Anticipation for NES.

At great risk to my person and reputation, I'm going to stick up for 2600 E.T. *dons Varia armor to guard against flames*

Just WHY do people have such a hard time figuring out this game??? There is a definite, attainable goal to it. Yes, accidentally falling into the pits can be annoying but it's really easy to avoid with a little practice. Surely, I can't be the ONLY one skilled enough to do it! If you really can't avoid the pits, try playing the game with a Genesis pad instead of the regular joystick; E.T. is easier to control that way. I actually like E.T... it's not the best game by any means, but it's not the worst either.

Of course, I like Journey Escape, NES Jaws and even Deadly Towers, so take my opinion for what it's worth. LOL

As for worst game, my vote goes to Super Pitfall. Part of me died the day I first played this game, and I'll never forgive it. Sssnake on the 2600, Operation Secret Storm on the NES and Helicopter Rescue on the O2 aren't much better.

SWORDQUEST series for the 2600!!!
Im not the brightest star in the galaxy, but come on, who the hell could figure that game out? Just a god awful game, the programmer should have been shot.
But worse than that was Cybermorph for the Jaguar. Game Fan said this game was great and put it on the cover of their magazine. I was excited so when I played it I was pissed. Game Fan HAD to be paid off from Atari to say that piece of junk was not just a good game but one of the best of all time.
Also Trever McFur in the Crescent Galaxy. Good graphics for the time, but after 5 minutes you would rather be playing Airlock instead.

Slam City for Sega CD, a totally annoying and unplayable game (and I actually liked most of the other FMV for the Sega CD)

Noah's Ark on SNES (a hack of Wolf 3D where you went around with a slingshot "feeding" tranquilers to animals)

I've gotta vote for the Atari 5200 version of Gorf.

My favorite system of all time + My favorite game = CRAP

What a disappointment... :(

Shaq-Fu for SNES, and Days of Thunder for NES. Why has nobody mentioned this game? Days of Thunder absolutely sucks.

Hmm..I kinda liked Days of Thunder. It's a real challenge to get past the first car. I haven't played Shaq Fu, but in my old game magazines it got good reviews, that always amazes me.

OK here goes:
Ive been playing vid games since the atari 2600 days, and the Worst game I have ever had the misfortune of experiencing is...
CYPERSPEED on the PSX , not many ppl even know about this coaster.
let me explain.
first off GAMEPLAY: hold One button down on the PS pad ( if forget wich) and your "ship" flies around a "track" on a rope! I swear its the truth. you dont have to touch the diagonal pad at all, thats it. there are supposed to be power-ups but nothing works, if u do use them you sure as hell wont hit anything but the wall.
Second GRAPHICS: A verrry poor mans wannabe Wipeout, absolutely horrid!
and lastly SOUND/MUSIC: ummm there is none! when u are racing there are a few effects but they sound like they are from a bad Genesis emulator.
most ppl dont know about this game , those are the lucky ones! let me put it this way , my friend couldnt give the game away and ended up using it as a coaster!

I have to agree with E.T. for Atari 2600 being absolutely wretched

As for NES? King's Knight and Knight Rider
