View Full Version : Consoles worth buying just for co-op play?

What retro/classic systems (either consoles or cartridge-based computers, no PC’s) would you say are worth buying just for its co-op games and no other reason? This could either be because

a) There are a whole lot of co-op games for that console which are either
exclusive to that system or have their best version on that system

b) There are only a couple of co-op games for that console but those
games are only on that console and they are good enough to justify
buying that system.

c) A super obscure weird system that only has 1 or 2 co-op games that
might suck but no-one will even know they exist without someone
familiar with the system pointing them out

I’ve done a LOT of research on this subject so I can kick this off with what I can think of at the moment.

Playstation 1,2,3 and Xbox, Xbox360 aren’t on this list because there are loads of lists of co-op games for those systems.

3DO – As far as I know, doesn’t have any co-op games other than Captain Quazar. There’s some game shows I think but they are competitive. Not a machine for co-op only players IMO.

Atari 2600 – definitely worth it for co-op play just for Joust and Mario Bros. We also play Space Invaders (one of us moves the other shoots)., Wizard or Wor, GI Joe, and a couple others, but for us, it’s all about Joust.

Atari 5200 – No idea whether its worth it just for co-op.

Atari 7800 – I’ve heard its good for co-op but I don’t know much about it so I don’t know if it’s worth getting just for co-op for people who already have a 2600.

Our TI-99/4A (cartridge based computer) I grew up with this computer so I’m biased towards it. There is some co-op play on two games that don’t to my knowledge exist on any other platform. We have a lot of fun playing Microsurgeon (one moves the other shoots) and also A-maze-ing in co-op mode.

Saturn US - We plan on getting one just for Guardian Heroes. I’ve read in several places it’s worth getting just for that game. We also plan on getting Virtual On, House of the Dead. I know there are some other very popular co-op Saturn games, but I think most them are Japanese and won’t play on the US console. From what I’ve read, this system is definatley worth buying just for co-op, but I have never owned one.

Saturn Japanese – not sure if you need to know Japanese to play these but there are several articles that say these are worth buying one: Dungeons and Dragons Collection, Elevator Action Returns, no idea if it would be worth buying one just for the Japanese co-op games.

N64 We have one in the mail and I got Star Fox 64 and Jet Force Gemeni in the mail too… I’m still looking into what co-op games there might justify buying this console, I’ve read Perfect Dark, is good on this console, but the jury is still out as to how. Honestly it was an impulse buy, as from what I’ve read the co-op games may or may not have been worth buying the system for co-op only games, I’ll report later when we get it.

Genesis/Mega drive: I’ve seen several co-op games listed for this esp but I’m not sure if they justify buying this system for co-op onlyor not: The ones I remember reading about are General Chaos, Streets of Rage 1-3, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

NES – I’m sure there are loads of co-op games for this, I just can’t remember what the exclusive co-op titles are or if it’s worth getting just for co-op.

SNES – I see several co-op games on co-op lists for this system but have no idea if it’s worth getting the system or not. People list Battle Toads but also say it’s really hard to beat. Turtles in Time, Double Dragon, Wild guns, Kirby Super Star, The Secret Of Mana
Zombies ate my neighbors. It seems like a candidate system for co-op only players, but I have no idea.

GameCube- Does anyone know if this is worth getting just for co-op? I see loads and loads and loads of co-op games for this system, but almost none of them seem to be exclusive to this system, maybe someone here knows.

Dreamcast – Hmm from what I’ve read this may not be worth buyng just for co-op, but again I’m just going by what I’ve read online.

Neo-Geo - People here have mentioned it having lots of co-op arcade style games.

Jaguar – I have no idea what the co-op scene is for this system.

FM Towns Marty – I don’t think there are any co-op games that justify getting this, but I’d love to be corrected if I’m wrong about that. The problem is from what I’ve read there really isn’t much in the way of exclusive titles for this, co-op or otherwise.

Sega Master System – Does anyone know the co-op situation for this?

TurboGrafx-16 – not sure about the co-op scene here

Obscure consoles: My wife and I love the obscure systems and are trying to find out which of the obscure systems have even 1 co-op game.
The TI-99/4a (cartridge based computer) has three co-op games that we know of as listed above.

Other consoles we’d love to know if there’s any co-op games at all no matter how bad are: Amstrad GX4000, Commodore 64 Games System, Action Max, Tomy Tutor/Pyuuta, Sega SG-1000, VTech CreatiVision, Fairchild Channel F, CD-I, Super A'can, Amiga CD32, Apples Pippin, iQue Player, Tapwave Zodiac, etc….

Please give your opinions as to which systems are worth buying just for co-op or any info on obscure systems with any co-op at all…

Magnavox Odyssey, most games on this console are co-op play.

Depends on your definition of "co-op". Reading your list, I'm not sure if you are really looking for true blue "co-op" (where you and another person or persons work together) or multiplayer (where you essentially play against each other). On the N64 you mention Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64 and Quake II which have multiplayer but no co-op (unless Quake II does, but I never played it). Atari 2600 you said it's "all about Joust" which I guess you can consider co-op but it's still more about who gets the more points (plus you can kill your partner), thus it leans more toward the competitive side. Virtual On is also a competitive player vs player game, if I'm not mistaken. Same thing with Dreamcast: Soul Calibur is player vs player as are the Power Stone games.

Now for bone fide "cooperative" games, here's what I can think of off the top of my head in a short amount of time:

NES: Contra, Double Dragon II on up, the Gauntlet games, Xenophobe (though the Atari 7800 version is better IMO), the Ikari Warriors games, Legendary Wings, Life Force, Battletoads, Jackal, 1943, Nightmare on Elm Street

N64: Gauntlet Legends (it's geared more as an "adventure game" as you can turn off the effects of power ups and then sell them off), Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark, Rainbow Six

SMS: Double Dragon, Time Soldiers and Quartet come to mind

Genesis: Golden Axe 1 & 2, Altered Beast, the Streets of Rage series, Sunset Riders (also on SNES), Cadash (only 2 players, TG-16 version has all four if I'm not mistaken), Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES version is more pretty), Gunstar Heroes, Toejam and Earl, Captain America and the Avengers (also on SNES, which is prettier)

SNES: Final Fight series, TMNT games, Knights of the Round

There's more out there but my memory is seizing on me. The question of if systems like the above are worth getting *just* for co-op....well I gotta ask why focus on co-op? I'm guessing the reason would be to get the wife to play games with you, which is the same situation I'm in with mine (if we can't play a dungeon crawler together, she either watches or just plays Animal Crossing on her DS). You can always switch off with one player games, either to beat a level or compete to get the higher score.

While there are a ton of games across the board over the years, the number of pure co-op titles is seems a bit small. I'd say for the sheer quantity the NES is your best bet. I rattled those titles off without even googling. Genesis would be a close second as a lot of arcade titles at the time of that system's life span had co-op. I didn't play a whole lot of SNES but from what I've gathered it's got some solid titles to make it a third choice.

You're not going to do much better than VirtualOn with a pair of TwinStick controllers for the Saturn. And yes, the USA version will support the Japan only TwinStick. If you're going to get into Japanese Saturn games the best option is a hardmodded USA Saturn with a USA/JPN region switch. That way a single Saturn will play all USA and all JPN games. I have them in my Buying and Selling thread from time to time.

It's not considered a classic system yet, but the original Xbox has a lot of games with co-op modes, although many of them are first person shooters. Right now, I'm thinking of Return to Castle Wolfenstein for example, but there are a lot of competitive multiplayer games in its library and you can do system links too.

WTF? Why isn't the Neo-Geo listed? If you have the money and want co-op gameplay with a "at the arcade" feel. Lots of Versus and Assist games.

I don't mean to come off as an ass, just odd so many systems were listed yet SNK was left out.

The VCS is pretty good.

Warlords (best 4 player game ever made), Combat, Outlaw, Space Invaders, Joust, Mario Bros, etc.... Atari is just a blast to play with other people. Even the non co-op games.

I'd also have to second the Neo-Geo. Arcade perfect co-op shooters and fighters - how can you go wrong?

As for NeoGeo, I just missed it is all. Its on the list now.

I'm looking for co-op where my wife and I work together and we are actually working together... We don't kill each other on Joust or pay too much attention to the score.

Thank you for pointing out the games on the list that are competitive..

Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Soul Calibur and Power Stone are off the list now, thanks for pointing them out. I'll have to research Quake II some more to make sure its not just multiplayer.

Because my wife and I only play games where we can cooperate together (We do play some games where we have to switch off, but we really prefer to cooperate on the games)

SNES has many co-op games worth playing, and the games are relatively affordable, so I highly recommend you buying one. Plus, it's just worth it to have, in general. There are literally tons of playable, enjoyable games on SNES that it's not even funny.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is actually one of the best co-op games I've played. Went through most of the game with my wife at one time, partially because it is one of few games we both like. On the very hardest races I'm just barely able to win them, but it helps and is more fun with a good co-pilot.

If it hasn't been mentioned TMNT II (and III?) on the NES are pretty good, and TMNT IV on the SNES. And I did see it earlier, but I'll second Secret of Mana if you have a consistent person to be the 2nd player. I'm playing through it solo right now, and can see how it would be nice to have the 2nd player active.

On the Turbografx-16 you have Aero Blasters and Chew Man Fu; Aero Blasters is a straight-ahead side-scrolling shooter, and Chew Man Fu is a maze-style action puzzler somewhat reminiscent of Bomberman. Both games are absolutely brilliant in co-op mode... And, of course, there's the original Bomberman for when you feel more competitive. :)

The Wii Virtual Console! NeoGeo, TurboGrafx, Snes, Nes, Genesis I think that is really all you would need. Yet it is still missing many games I think some will come along!

CreatiVision: there's a bunch of games to play in co-op and vs. mode:

- Crazy Chicky: co-op mode with 2 "Pacman" on the same labyrinth
- Crazy Pucker: same as Crazy Chicky with graphics variations
- Air Sea Attack: 2 player versus
- Soccer: 2 player versus
- Sonic Invader: co-op mode with 2 turrets shooting
- Tennis: 2 player versus
- Tank Attack: 2 player versus

Two 7800 games--Asteroids and Centipede--offer brilliant two-player simultaneous action, cooperative and competitive. These games are easily worth the cost of the system.

Mario Bros. for the NES is a fun (and funny) two-player game. It a blast to trick the other player and bump them into enemies.

Are you only interested in 2 player co-op?

For TG16/TGCD

Dungeon Explorer and Dungeon Explorer 2 both have up to 5 player co-op.

Bonk 3 - 2 player co-op.

PCE/PCECD

Magicoal - 2 player co-op.

Mega Drive/Genesis:
General Chaos, Streets of Rage 1-3, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3.
These are all great, but also check out Gunstar Heroes, Contra: Hard Corps (jap version is easier), Toejam & Earl 2, World of Illusion, X-Men 2, Lost World: Jurassic Park, Arcus Odyssey, Adventures of Batman & Robin, Biohazard Battle, Vapor Trail, Snow Bros, Wani Wani World.

Master System:
Not that many coop games for this one, but it's pretty cheap and what's there is good. Bubble Bobble, Double Dragon, Fantasy Zone 3, Rambo: First Blood Part 2,
