A friend of mine just sold me his gaming computer in order to build another one. I've never gamed on a PC before, so the PC games are new to me. This PC is very current (it'll run the latest FPS no probs). I'm looking to use it for RPGs, both classic and modern (currently playing the original Baldur's Gate on it) and would like suggestions for some "gotta play" offline RPGs. WOW is going to consume my online focus LOL.

Ultima 1-9: fun games if you can find them. :)
Fall Out 1&2: (Found a copy at Frys for $14 not bad for 3 games!)
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Diablo 1 &2
Rogue, Nethack, and ADOM (http://www.adom.de/)

There are a lot of different Rpgs out there, just need to find out what kind you like. Look some up on google and see what you find.

Is there a particular type of RPG you're looking for? There are have been quite a few PC threads on the subject, maybe we can point you there.

The problem with PC RPG games is that there is barely any.

The only ones I could think of is that game Star Trooper Knock off Wing Commander.

Ever Quest voted MMORPG of 99. Like PSO but PC based. You will love the users.

System Shock. However this is a FPS with many features then a RPG but considered one.

There is alot of simulators on PC. I forget this one that was like SIMS but you ran an apartment building.

Also there is some in stores like Digimon Battlers or whatever that is. I would get into it if it support the originals.

The sequel blows the first one out of the water.

The second games was in pure 3d rather then pre-rendered. It is good in terms of age and is quite basic

Neverwinter Nights is pretty good (and inexpensive now). I don't even like RPG's and it's one of my most played PC games. Good stuff!

ANACHRONOX. Tom Hall's wrongly forgotten work of genius. Plays a lot like a JRPG, and a little rough around the edges, but the sheer genius clearly shines through.

Also, Septerra Core is quite nice. Sort of like a poor man's Chrono Trigger. See http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57321.

And see http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20594 .

Oh crap! I've seen that game before and have passed on it. It's been years since I last stumbled across it and is now a must buy on sight (older PC games rarely cost more than $5 around here).

What? Since he is looking at all of them and just not new ones you'll notice that the PC has significantly more RPG's than any console. I myself own over 80 of them...

It was rereleased by Topware just a little while ago, actually.

I would agree that percentage-wise, there really aren't that many PC RPGs released.

Morrowind and Oblivion for sure. Actually, just pick one. You'll never finish both between the expansions and all the user created mods and content.

One of my favorite PC RPGs is Arcanum. It's a Victorian age steam punk adventure by the same developer as the Fall Out series.

Oblivion is all flash? Excuse me?

And what's abandonwear? Like, some pants you decide to leave on the street after you're done with them?

Come on, man. Spell check, punctuation...these are the things that make people want to read what you say.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 + their respective expansion packs (if you search eBay you can find the European bargain edition that has all four games on DVDs)

Icewind Dale 1 & 2 + Heart Of Winter expansion for IWD 1 (again, you can get all 3 on DVD if you check out eBay)

Fallout 1 & 2, also Fallout Tactics, if you can find it. (once again, you can find a Euro edition that has all 3 games on DVD if you check out eBay)

Neverwinter Nights

Morrowind + expansions

Diablo II

Wizardry 8 - Kind of hard to find, but a pretty good game.

Arcanum

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head...there are lots of others.

Wasn't Krondor released as public domain a few years back?

Arcanum is probably my favorite PC RPG, it has by far the best character creation engine out there. Quite a robust world, too.

Septerra Core was mentioned, and I'll agree - it's an extreme rarity - a console RPG on the PC.

The PC has versions of FF VII and VIII

I don't think Arx Fatalis has been mentioned yet, it's a pretty good first-person dungeon crawler RPG, like the old Ultima Underworlds.

Beyond Divinity/Divine Divinity and Sacred are good Diablo clones

If you like a little strategy, Birthright: The Gorgon's Alliance is an older empire building/TBS/fantasy game that has first-person dungeon sequences like Arx Fatalis.

Fallout 1 & 2, also Fallout Tactics, if you can find it. (once again, you can find a Euro edition that has all 3 games on DVD if you check out eBay)

I seem to see it on occasion hereabouts. NCIX (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=24289&vpn=G1257A&manufacture=INTERPLAY%20PRODUCTIONS) in Vancouver has it. (Fallout Tactics used to be one of those hopelessly rare, expensive games, but not anymore!)

The original basis for Fallout, Wasteland, is also well-favored.

Lots of fans of Auto Duel out there, too.

And of course I shall plug The Spirit Engine, a high-quality product that offers challenge and innovation, and for an unbeatable price!

Wasn't Krondor released as public domain a few years back?

There was a temporary promotional freeware release by Sierra to promote the release of Betrayal at Antarra. They then later stopped offering the game and had rather unkind words for those who continued distributing it. So no, not public domain!

Try Knight of the Old Republic 1 & 2. Team Gizka is working on KOTOR 2 fixed. So you can play the complete game.

Thanks! My interests would lean towards the "Lord Of The Rings-merry band of companions travelling through snow-whipped lands" style of gaming AND classic dungeon crawlers. I'm a big fan of turn-based. Many of these titles are familiar to me in name from magazines, I just needed my memory to be jogged. I'm happy with the chance to do some PC gaming. WHY? Because I finally get to play Daggerfall. I've played Morrowind and finished it, twice...and have finished Oblivion five times, and working through the sixth....on the consoles of course. And yes, I hear that Neverwinter is outstanding.

If you try Wasteland and find it enjoyable, you may want to track down its 'sequel' Fountain of Dreams (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=425). IMHO, a few other old-school PC classics worth tracking down are Escape from Hell (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=377), Circuit's Edge (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=200), and Neuromancer (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=761) (although I played the C-64 version).

FYI, Home of the Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.info/index.php) is a great reference/resource for PC games.

Oh, right, Escape From Hell. I meant to take a look at that one at some point. It sounds quite cool.

I've also heard some nice things about Bloodnet, but it's a bit hard to find.

Superhero League of Hoboken also very neatly fits into the RPG genre, though really it is a game to be played for its rather amusing humor rather than its gameplay. (It's one of Legend's old adventure games with the RPG gameplay thrown in.)

Anyway, it hasn't been said often enough yet in this thread, so: whatever happens, play Planescape Torment first.

Start with that one. Seriously. Go get it and start playing it right now. I'm not even joking.

After that, I say move on to the Fallouts, but that's just me ...

Planescape Torment x3

Oh geez...how could I forget that one? Another title well worth seeking out.

If you wanna get really old school, there are the Bard's Tale games (which if you get the somewhat recent Bard's Tale game for the PC it comes with the original DOS versions of the games as a bonus). Also Wizardry, if you really want some classic dungeon crawl action. Wizardry Gold and Wizardry 8 work in windows, the others vary from olllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll ld (like Apple ][, so you'd need an emulator) to DOS (you'll need DOSbox to run 'em)

I remember picking up that game in a 2 pack with Shogo, which was a very underrated Mech game. There was supposed to be some sequels and of course that never happened, it still has a small cult following last time I checked.

I remember Septerra Core having a few glitches where the game would crash/just close without warning. There was a patch released that supposedly fix it, but it would still happen from time to time and would be quite the annoyance.

You can actually get them all in a nice little bundle pack, the Forgotten Realms Archives.

Hardly anything is ever released into the public domain as far as old PC games go. I hear Bethesda keeps a pretty short leash on that freeware release of Arena.

I keep forgetting what happened to Ultima IV, but the XU4 (http://xu4.sourceforge.net/download.php) folks seem pretty confident about its freeware nature.

Nox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nox_%28video_game%29)
Exile series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exile_%28computer_game_series%29)

Everything else significant that I can think of has been mentioned. Nethack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nethack) bears repeating, since it is pure gameplay; a perfect example of how things can work together in a game world in such a complete fashion. It sets the watermark that no modern RPG has yet to touch.

Wasteland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasteland_%28computer_game%29), also previously mentioned a few times, is pure old-school awesome.

I enjoyed all of the Might and Magic games I have played. They newest ones are very vanilla, but I enjoyed the couple that I played...I may be the only one though...

Anyone remember Alternate Reality (The City and The Dungeon?).

Here's one I had fun with ages ago: Keef The Thief

Most of these have probably already been mentioned. Mostly classic games, as I don't play many computer games anymore:
Ultima 3-7 (I'm a fan of the series, but the rest of them are pretty weak)
Ultima Underworld 1 & 2
Wasteland
Dungeon Master
Eye of the Beholder
All the AD&D SSI Gold Box games (There's a lot of them, I'd recommend starting with Pools of Darkness)
Planescape: Torment
Dark Heart of Uukrul
Nethack

A great collection, to be sure... but it most definitely does NOT contain ALL the Gold Box games! Specifically, it doesn't include the Dragonlance or Buck Rogers games. I guess that's to be expected since none of those take place in the Forgotten Realms.

I never played the Buck Rogers games, and the Dragonlance games never seemed as fun as the Forgotten Realms ones (especially annoying was the fact that characters who died in battle received NO experience from that battle, which, as far as I know, is against AD&D rules)... but they're certainly worth playing.
