Scheduled for release on December 18th (we're confirming the date with SCEA), Firmware 2.10 joins the Xbox 360's Fall dashboard update (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/30/xbox-360-fall-dashboard-update-detailed-divx-xbla-hits-and-mo/) in offering support for the pervasive DivX video codec (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/13/ps3-divx-support-announced/). There are some caveats, however, as files that are copyright-protected, encoded with DivX 3.11or larger than 2GB in size are not supported.

Also added by the update is support for VC-1 (WMV) playback, Type 3 music bitmapping, Blu-ray Profile 1.1 and a "Voice Changer." You know, in case you thought your normal voice wasn't obnoxious enough in the hushed library that is the PS3's online scene.

Exactly. Also...why does it take 1/2 hour to download, install, and then restart to update the PS3? The 360 took less than 1 minute for the fall update.

I can copy all my porn to my PS3's hard drive? Sweet.

TVersity is the only update I needed...

Debatably, the best part of the update is BluRay 1.1, as they've finally caught up to HD DVD's HDi, allowing true picture in picture for special features like WB's "in-movie experience."

I have yet to test it, but I have heard while DivX works, Xvid does not. Which is lame.

The better update news today is for the PSP. It now has a radio tuner.

I tried this out, and while streaming .avi videos from this older version of Windows Media Connect I've got doesn't work, I can run .avi videos off of CDR just fine. I would imagine USB drives wouldn't have a problem either. I'm surprised they brought in support for .wmv! That was unexpected!

An additional "quiet" non-publicized feature that has come through in this update (which, personally I find to be a fantastic one)

is : The ability to play any PS1 game in the disc drive of the PS3 or ones downloaded from the PSN Store when using the PSP's remote play feature.

Now I can save some space on my memory stick if I know I'm going to be somewhere with my PSP and a Wi-Fi connection!

Now, if only they would add a feature where you could rip your PS1 game discs to the HDD/XMB for play, that would greatly enhance this new feature. (But, since they're currently in the business of selling PS1 games on the PSN Store, that's probably not going to happen.)

Some of my xvids work. Not sure what makes the difference.

I am using Windows Media Player as a server for testing, though I use TVersity mostly.

XviD works fine. I tried it myself earlier today. Just make sure that the XviD file is "properly" encoded and you shouldnt have any problems :)

I just noticed that there was new PSP firmware out as well ...

... including 2 free intergrated internet radio players!!!

(Shoutcast and Icecast)

You know ... for all the whining that people have done about Sony this year ... they just keep throwing excellent firmware updates at us.

I don't think there's ever been a console developer that has handled updating the functionality of it's platforms' firmware as well as Sony (this year anyway) they're really embracing it and being wildly experimental.

I love it!
