Okay, I just bought a Master System off eBay, and played it for a bit, enjoying the crap out of it.
However, I'm just curious about the controller. Is the D-pad really supposed to be that sensitive? There will be numerous times I press up, and Arthur (Ghouls n' Ghosts) will continue going right, or my plane in AfterBurner will roll to the left or right.
Just curious for all the SMS guys out there.

I prefer using a genesis controller through my power base convertor, too bad I have to keep a sms controller around for the oddball game that doesn't like the genesis controller like Montezuma's Revenge.

Not all sms controllers are born equal. Many have sloppy D-pads which will often go in the wrong direction, whereas some (the minority it seems to me) are quite accurate. Personally I use the Megadrive Arcade Power Stick for everything, much better.

The earlier pads (with the hole for the screw-in joystick) are a lot more accurate than the later ones.

I have noticed this, I have 3 or 4 of each and these are much nicer. Does anyone know where to get a screw in joystick?

Quoted for truth. I prefer those pads too.

Unfortunately, as you have experienced firsthand, the SMS d-pad isn't nearly as functional as the NES one. What you are describing is about par for the course...I still often make gear changes accidentally when making turns in Out Run. You just have to get used to it or use a different pad.
The SMS has a lot of games that are exclusive to the system and it's fun and easy to collect for. Overall, you should enjoy it.

Trust me, I am. I've played the SMS through emulation for years, and I know exactly what I'm going for. And since it's region-free, I already know of a few imports I want, with Ninja Gaiden being at the top of the list (I played the hell out of the ROM).
The D-pad will take some getting used to though.

I read this thread last night and try out my older pad (Alien Syndrome)-- It really do feel much better than the late model pad I was using.
I thought all pad were equal so I just used the newer one (my old pad is missing the cap for the hole :( ) I will continue to use my old model pad now. I have another one some where but that will take time to search. The cord is also longer on the old model pad.

The early pads with the joysticks all have the wire coming out the side of the controller, though, don't they? All the ones I've seen do at least and that bothers me to no end.
I actually have a SMS controller that I cobbled together from the case and PCB of a later model controller so the wire comes out the top and it's a more flexible sort of rubber, but it has the buttons, dpad and rubber mat things from an earlier controller so it feels nice. I even have the screw-in joystick for it. It is the ultimate Master System controller!
Actually, though, as others have said, a Genesis controller is the real ultimate Master System controller.
...word is bondage...

No, not all of them - I've got a couple of early ones with the lead coming out of the top. Could just be a Euro thing though, I guess...

Nope, I've got one as well.
