You should definitely play Valkyrie Profile 2. I don't like it nearly as much as the original, but it's still an excellent game.

no offense, but what was the point of posting all of that....?

Disgaea is one of the best rpgs I've played in a loooong time, so I'd recommend that. If you don't do the srpg thing, then I would second any of the Shin Megami Tensei games, or maybe Valkyrie Profile 2.

By deleting the games you didn't?

Not to mention he asked for the system's best. Not the whole library.

Anyways my favorites for the system aren't many. But I enjoyed Dragon Quest VIII (which you played but whatever), Wizardry, Phantom Brave, Atelier Iris, and Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland.

I'm really looking forward to playing Persona 3, but I dunno I've had a hard time getting into the system.

Have you played Shin Megami Tensei: Calm the Beef Min?

It is freaking awesome.

You've beaten it, but god damn if I didn't love the hell out of Star Ocean 3. That combat system just rocked once I figured out what the hell was going on (no thanks to the worthless tutorial).

Adding recommendations for:

Valkyrie Profile 2
Atelier Iris
Anything Shin Megami Tensei

IMO, those are the best of the non-mainstream RPGs (not including action or strategy RPGs)

The first Xenosaga was awesome, and Disgaea might be the best game on the system.
La Pucelle was good too.
