Most of the time I can tell from the demo if I'm going to enjoy a particular game enough to purchase, but every once in awhile I buy a game I end up regretting. For me, it's Rally-X. I really thought I loved that game, but you know, I rarely play it and when I do I wonder why I thought I liked it in the first place. There's just not much to the game at all.

Cyberball, Rush 'N Attack, or Gauntlet.
Thought I liked them enough to buy, but I rarely play them. That's almost an entire points card wasted.

XBLA-Right now Street Fighter II Because of the damn 360 dpad. After that, a toss up between Double Dragon and fatal Fury Special.
Virtual Console-Pretty much everything as I don't play my Wii. Star Fox 64 I thought was pretty shitty with the classic controller and the GC controller.
Also, I have downloaded Streets of Rage 2 on the 360 and WII. game still kicks so much ass though

Most regretted? Probably the first G.R.A.W. map pack that came out during the summer of 2006. It was 1200 points ($15) and I've played those maps maybe once or twice. I've since learned to wait for the maps to become free. The two Rainbow Six: Vegas map packs are excellent...but only because I didn't pay a dime for them.

Golden Axe on XBLA. Only because the D-pad makes the game almost unplayable. Sad because it was a good idea.

XBL's Small Arms.
Game is utter shit. One would think that the AI would attack each other as well as you. No, they only gang up on you, and in some levels thats guaranteed death. I can't even get half way through the game without loosing all my points. Nuts to that shit.

Ditto. Bought it on the $5 sale price and still feel ripped off.
I really needed focus on whether it's a platformer, melee fighter, beat-em-up, or shooter. You can't mesh all of that and make it work.

I'd say Heavy Weapon, though that's mainly because I generally don't buy too many games. It's not crap or anything, but here a few months later, I can think of better way to have spent that $10.
If this is open to the ps3's store, then I'd say Flow, which tried to be style over substance, but sadly has only a trace amount of either.

XBLA has to be Wing Commander Arena. Being a HUGE fan of the WC games, this one left a very bitter taste in my mouth. They basically took everything that made WC WC, threw it out the window, and made a crappy flash style shooter with a button layout that physically hurts your fingers. Absolutely dire.
Close second is Mad Trax. I'd been looking forward to it since it was announced 2 years ago, and when it finally came out, I soon realised that the game was a total and utter pile of dogshit.
PSN - hmmmmm tough one. Almost all the PSN games I've bought are total shit (with the notable exception of the WONDERFUL Super Stardust HD). I'd probably say that Super Sprint, Super Rub-A-Dub, and PixelJunk Racers scrape the bottom of the barrel though.
VC - All of them. Overpriced, total wastes of cash, half of which I can't even play without having to fart about with transferring files back and forth from SD card to fit in internal memory. The game I thought was the biggest regret was Street Fighter II...only cos I bought the damn thing, then SF2 came out on XBLA AND SF2 Turbo hit the VC only a month or two later.

Wing Commander Arena. It controls awkwardly and just messes up the play.
I thought Small Arms is pretty nice. If you're having trouble playing main mode, use the blue soldier guy, forgot his name. His secondary weapon shoots electric rings. Just spam that at AI opponents. It'll kill them in about 4 hits or so.

Carcassone on XBLA.
For some reason, I thought it would be similar in quality / style to the classic and daftly superior Settlers of Catan.
I was wrong. Dead wrong.
No wonder they were giving the damned thing away for free on the 5 year XBL anniversary.

Novadrome. The worst Twisted Metal clone on the face of the earth.
And Yaris. Yes, I know it was free, but that didn't stop me from deleting it after about 10 minutes of playing it.
I'm very picky about what VC games I buy. I also think the VC games are waaaaaaaaaaay overpriced. And even MS throws us a free game, every now and then - what gives Nintendo? Are you guys really that cheap?

Nintendo, the company that has charged us for the same old Super Mario Brothers (in one form or another) on almost every system since the NES.
... and, we the consumers that have bought it 5 or 6 times over.

Probably Mad Tracks and Jetpac Refuelled for XBLA. And if the free ones count, Yaris is pretty shitty as well.
As for Wii, I kind of regret downloading Dungeon Explorer for TG-16.

Oh god, where to start. :-( Buying Soltrio Solitaire, tricked into thinking it'd be more than just 1/6 of the actual game; Spyglass Boardgames was an absolute clunker of epic proportion; Word Puzzle- I was expecting something similar to Scrabble Blast and it's a fucking wordsearch program. To be fair that's about it really. I'm very picky about what I download, especially if I'm shelling out money for it.

I'm very careful about the VC games I get, so I don't know if I have any regrets. MAYBE Alien Soldier. I LIKE the game A LOT but it's too damn hard. It may be way out of my league, I'm afraid. I'm old and not what I used to be. ;)

Funny you should mention this game - someone just gifted it to me.
It is very hard, and I can see why the challenge might be a turn-off for some people. However, upon playing it again for the first time in years, I realized something that had never quite clicked in for me before: You're not supposed to play this like an action game - full guns blazing (so to speak), attacking everything in sight, etc. You have to play it strategically, and that means avoiding some of the enemies, moving around the area smartly, and so on.
Try the game again with that in mind, and you may have more fun with it.

Double Dragon. That game is shit and proves that hindsight isn't always 20/20.
Space Giraffe. ... This always starts a fight, but I don't like it, and nevermind how awesome Tempest 2000 was.

The remake does suck, but, the original(s) is/are awesome.
Pro Tip-Use the forward forward move on enemies and then walk away and use it as they get up. Do this back and forth and you can beat the whole game and get a decent score very easily this way. Only way that I know of to get the "don't get hit on level 1" achievement.

I only downloaded 2 XBLA games, Street Fighter 2 and Doom, and they're both pretty good.
Out of those, SF2 is the worst because no one plays it and its hard on the xbox controller. Doom rocks though.

I love New Rally X. Had a lot of fun getting the achievements, though I did it on one quarter if I was playing on a arcade machine...
Its nice to know its there though and I fire it up occasionally. Simple but still fun.
The game I regret is Carcassone. Had the points burning a hole in my hd a few months back and bought it, but never had time to play it. Then it became free and it's annoyed me ever since, I've yet to play it beyond firing it up for 60 seconds.
Spyglass Boardgames is probably the worst title I've downloaded, if you don't include Yaris.
I have 47 XBLA releases and I've been pretty happy with about 45 of them. The demos are a nice way to try them out beforehand, saves me points on several games like Jetpac.

You're not the only one. Don't get me wrong, I love both games, but Catan plays no faster on XBLA than it does in real life...so there's not much reason for me to play it over the real life version. And I've probably played Catan 4-500 times in the past few years...so I'm a bit burnt on it.
Carcassonne though takes about half the time as it's real life counterpart. It helps with correct placements...speeding up the game tremendously, and it does all the scoring stuff at the end for you which, while not difficult IRL, can get confusing sometimes.
Now, when am I getting Alhambra and Puerto Rico?????

Aw, come on. Carcassonne is one of the best games on there, hands down. A lot of people I know didn't like it, but if you do take the time to learn the nuances, it's a really fun strategy game. Not the weakest game on there by any means.
I've bought about 30 games on XBLA; my top 5 shittiest are:
1) Space Giraffe (I mean, wtf. I guess I don't "get it," but since the instructions are shit and I have many games to play, this one can fuck off)
2) Small Arms (complete shit, even though I got all the achievements)
3) Streets of Rage 2 (boring.)
4) Ecco the Dolphin (sucks hardcore)
5) Cyberball (wow...just wow. Should have tried the demo before buying what I had heard was a "classic.")

This is a good topic.
Cloning Clyde is my most regretted, even though I own a couple games I have played less. Street Fighter II comes behind that. Those are the only two games of the 40+ XBLA games I own that I wish I hasn't gotten. All of the others I feel were worth it.

Robotron 2084... I got it for free and still feel like it stole my money. The game wouldn't be too bad, but it gets way too hard, WAY too fast. I don't even think I made it to wave 10, ever.
Other than that... Yaris. Free too, but it stole my time, and I never even unlocked an achievement from it.

I guess I forgot to share my least favorite when I was championing Carcassonne above :P
I really was disappointed in Jetpac. I always enjoyed it as a kid, but then playing it all these years later kind of left me cold.
I want a refund for Space Giraffe as well, and I only downloaded the demo, but I still feel like I'm owed money for playing that mess.

As an aside to the topic at hand, I blindly bought a theme and a pack of gamerpics for Assault Heroes because I enjoyed the game so much and figured the developers got a little of the money from that. Wow. I've seen a lot of fugly things in my life, but that Assault Heroes theme may just be in the top 10.
I don't make a habit out of buying themes and such, but I still think the SFII and some weird Mech theme I downloaded were worth it. The only other picture pack I've bought was one for Fatal Fury, but that was purely for the Terry pic.:rocker:

I've only made three purchases, but I have questioned whether or not I should have bought Centipede/Millipede. The game is fine, I just think I'll play my other purchases more.
I revisited the Carcassone demo after reading this thread, and I still consider it a strong candidate for a future purchase, although now I think I'll limit myself to either it OR Catan, and not both (which is how I ended up with Asteroids and Centipede...)

Dr. Robotniks' Mean Bean Machine. I thought it would be a good puzzler, and it wasn't readily available elsewhere so $8 didn't seem to bad. But I really don't like the game at all - the difficulty spikes from super easy to super hard way too fast. It just didn't play that well imho, although I do like the visuals.
I also have to mention Bomberman Live. I love Bomberman, and Bomberman Live was pretty much the reason I bought a 360. In the months following the release, I have never, ever been able to join a quick match. I have also very rarely been able to enter an existing match - essentially I have to create a match every time I wanted to play. This is ridiculous. I have little lag, and haven't had problems with other games. Bomberman Live is a good game, no doubt, but the lack of fully useable online play is a really big downer. Very disappointed.

I think I made a mistake with Dynastic Hero on the virtual Console. I love the Wonderboy in Monster World game and had no idea that this was the same exact game but with upgraded CD quality. Dynastic Hero is awesome, but I wouldn't have bought it if I knew it was Wonder Boy because I already have that.
