I got a cheap complete wonderswan color, and I want to know what games are good for someone who isn't 100% fluent in Japanese. Platformers, shooters?

i am copying and pasting this from a private message i sent someone earlier this year. but this should help when it comes to a list of english friendly games.

I'll break down the english friendly stuff in by genre. (RPGs, are out of the question though, there is no english friendly from what i have play first hand so far).

Puzzle (most abundant, but theres a bunch of quality stuff)
Mr. Driller
Tetris
Magical Drop
Mingle Magnet
Glocal Hexcite
Xi [sai] little *Devil Dice*
Sennou Millenium
Gunpey
Gunpey Ex (best of the gunpeys to buy)
Tarepanda no Gunpey
Flash Koibito-Kun
Puzzle Bobble
Tane o Makutori

Fighting/wrestling
Guilty Gear Petite
Guilty Gear Petite 2
Ultraman: Hikari no Kuni no Shisha
Kinnikuman Second Generations: Dream Tag Match
Fire Pro Wrestling
Shin Nihon Pro Wrestling Toukon Retsuden

Rhythm games
Rhyme Rider Kerorican
Turntablist: DJ Battle

Action
Buffer's Evolution
Crazy climber
Space invaders (have not played this version but come on, do i need to really check if its english friendly?)
Makaimura (Ghouls'n'ghosts, have not played it)

Sports
Wonder Stadium
Wonder stadium '99 (baseball)
Soccer Yarou!: Challenge the World

other
Side pocket (decent pool sim)
Trump Collection (real good casino sim)
Fishing Freaks: Bass Rise For Wonderswan (lots of menus, cool if you dont mind fishing with reandom equipment heh)
Umizuri ni Ikou! (same deal as fishing freaks)

hope thats a good start, i am still learning about the system as i go but thats a good list to start with plus a good chunk of it can be had complete at a reasonable price (if purchased right on ebay, like under $10 for most games after shipping).

A few others of note not listed above:
Rockman & Forte
Klonoa Moonlight Museum
and a Ninja Kun game are all worth playing.

The only worthwhile shmup on the system is Judgement Silversword, but the money could be better spent elsewhere (perhaps a few good console shmups).

As you will discover, the screen on the WonderSwan Color is still difficult to see (even in optimal conditions (like the B&W WS)). The SwanCrystal is a great improvement in screen quality and also button quality.
Also, the "Worm Light" accessory helps a good deal with screen visibility (if you can find one).

Run=Dim is basically English friendly, but it's harder to find and rarer (at least in complete form) than Judgment Silversword (and nowhere near as good a shooter, for sure). JS isn't so difficult to source these days since it's been through I believe 4 reprints - I picked up both my copies brand new in the last year and a half for ~$60, which isn't so expensive for a game of its quality, IMO.

There's also the JS forerunner (I can't remember the name off the top of my head) which is available freely, but requires the Wonder Witch to run -- and good luck finding one of those.

Personally, I think the WS screen is just fine and playable under most brighter lights -- and it looks fantastic under direct sunlight. The only non-backlit screen I like more is the NGPC... I've never seen the need to search out the Worm Light, but of course, YMMV.

So there's three types of Bandai WonderSwans?

Bandai WonderSwan Mono
Bandai WonderSwan Color
and this "SwanCrystal"

May I have more info on the third?

Tis just a nicer redesign of the Color, totally compatible with all the games. It has a much nicer screen than the Color - think GBA SP old vs. new.

Here's a Japanese page (http://www1.kamakuranet.ne.jp/swanswan/hardware/index.html) with pics of all three models.

Judgement Silversword actually got a release? I didn't know that.
