Well I finished SMB the other day all the way through with no warps so I now need to come up with a new game, so FF III and VII now share my top spot.

Metal Storm. I've always wanted to, just have never found the time. By the way, edit your post because it confused the hell out of me until I read it.

nes gauntlet, no matter how much I try I just can't seem to finish it, I can get up to the 3 headed dragon but even without taking a hit my health counts down to nothing and i can barely knock off one head!

the other is nes double dragon, I can beat the prototype version but machine gun willy is just so cheap one slighly badly placed anything and you're dead and its back to fighitng abobo again.

I beat SMB once, but that is because I enjoyed playing SMB3 more.

I guess I could say "Pro Wrestling" but I get bored with it more than unable to complete it.

Another Super Mario Bros. over here.
I back when I was a kid I wasn't very good at games. Then again, I mostly only played for fun, that's what counts.

Also haven't beat SMB2 or 3 either. SMW and SMW2:YI I have beat though.

I'm ashamed to say that I have never beaten SMB. I have tried a few times but I've also never really sat down and put the effort in.

So how about everyone else? What is your dirty little secret game that you've never beaten?

Dude, I was the same way. I finally beat this game 3 years back. I was 22. I took a picture of the end screen.

I have yet to beat Super Mario Sunshine. I can do it anytime, but, I am trying to get all the Shines. That is gonna be a tough feat. I get on a roll and knock out 10 or so every other month, I have almost 90 some.

SMB, 8-2 this time.

I've 100%ed SMW (96 exits), SM64 (120 stars, 150 on DS), Sunshine (120 shines) AND Galaxy (120 stars, okay, but only with Mario) but I can never crack the original.

I was ashamed of never saving the princess in SMB for the longest time, but I finally did it... I don't remember exactly when, I think it was after the SNES came out.

The only other gaming shames I've had since were not finishing Contra or Life Force without the 30 lives code, but I've cleared those up in the past couple years by 1CC-ing Contra with 3 lives and finishing Life Force without even dying.

Then there are games that I have finished in the past, but can't any more- Ninja Turtles, (That one corridor with the laser soldiers always gets me) Ninja Gaiden (I can't keep up with Jaquio's patterns) and Blaster Master is too goddamn long.

I have a grand list of shame!

1) The only Zelda game I've ever finished was Ocarina of Time.
2) Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!(this is actually my favorite NES game after RCR so its even more pathetic I haven't beat it)
3) I've never beat any Mega Man game before.
4) I never beat any Castlevania up until SotN.
5) I've never beat any Metroid game before.
6) Snatcher(I am a huge Cyberpunk fan and Metal Gear fan too, so this is like my #1 game to beat right now)
7) StarCraft(in fact, i've never beat any RTS game before)
8) I've never beat any Sonic game before even though I own and have played nearly every one.
9) The only Mario game I've ever beat was not made by Nintendo.
10) Half-Life(I didn't beat this because I felt it was very mediocre)
11) The only Dragon Warrior I beat was 7(and I spent around 350 hours with it).
12) X-COM: UFO Defense(I've been meaning to play this for years)
13) Radiant Silvergun(shmups are one of my least favorite genres but that isnt any excuse to have never even tried what is typically considered the best of the bunch).
14) Never even played a Star Control before and I totally dig those kinds of games.
15) The only Phantasy Star I beat was 4.
16) Never played FreeSpace 2(same answer as Radiant Silvergun)
17) I've never even played any Civilization game before.
18) I've only beat one of LucasArts epic graphical adventures(Maniac Mansion).
19) System Shock 2(pretty close to the same answer as Snatcher, I desperately want to play this but can't find it).
20) I own every Contra game ever and never beat any of them(they are just too fucking hard!).

Phew, I think thats everything. Aside from those I beat every other game thats considered "great" or "classic". So overall I'm pretty accomplished but that list still looks bad. ^^;

Woah. It never occurred to me Gauntlet had an ending!

does the Genesis version have an ending too? I got up past 100 levels once, and got tired of playing long enough to see if it would ever end... I was over it and the friend I was playing with had gotten over it and left already... and there didn't seem to be a way to save it and come back to it later... so I decided that expecting players to play through over 100 levels in one sitting was asking too much... I know it's been a requirement in several games to complete 99 or 100 levels, but I think that's the limit at which designers should stop... no game is really that much fun to anyone for that long... but still I've always been curious what would've happened if I had kept playing... so I guess that would have to be my answer... does Gauntlet 4 ever end?

All of you that have never beaten Super Mario Bros. put down the mouse, turn off the interweb, and don't come back until you complete the game! I think that should be a requirement before joining the forums in the first place.

I know it isn't a "big" game, but I love Ninja Golf, yet I have never finished all 9 holes. The best I have done is the 7th hole.

FFVII. I've gotten well into the second disc three times. All three times, I lost my save. It's hard to call something "one of my fav" when I have to finish the conversation with "I don't know, I haven't beaten it."

I'll hang my head in shame and also say Super Mario Bros. My mom was one of those who could blaze through the game in no time at all. It was the only game that she COULD play.

I have never taken down the end boss of FF8. I just traded in Drake's Fortune, unfinished, because I just could NOT take down the end boss, and that was on "easy". Naughty Dog needs to reconsider their definition of easy. It's okay though. I traded it in for Virtua Fighter 5, which is magnificent.

This sounds like SMB anonymous meeting. I don't think I've beaten it either. In fact if it wasn't for the game genie when I was a kid, I don't think I would have ever seen the ending to a lot of games.

Neutopia. I made it to one of the last dungeons, and lost the freakishly long password. That was almost a year ago, and I haven't had the courage to pick it up and try again. Zelda A Link to the Past ranks pretty high too, simply because I was really far and had to quit because I had to go to school 350 miles from home and wasn't allowed to bring SNES. And then I got Final Fantasy VII and have been busy with it, so there it sits 4 dungeons into the Dark World, not to be played until after I finish FFVII and Dirge of Cerberus. Plus, I just picked up Final Fantasy V Advance and I'll probably end up playing through that. And I'm actively looking for VIII and IX. I'm so helplessly lost in the story of FFVII, although I must admit VIII was better....

Resident Evil 2.

I have a save file at what I'm told is either at or right before the end of the game. This creature comes out and I saved with less ammo than I need to kill it. There's no more ammo left in the game up to that point. It's the infinite loop of certain death. Or in this case, the infinite loop of not enough ammo (which eventually leads to certain death.)

Super Mario Bros. 2 (US). I've beaten the original, and the third, but not this one (nor the Japanese 2, but I'm not ashamed of that). SMB2 US is supposed to be the easiest of the 8-bit Mario games, and yet I can't beat it. I never really dedicated myself to it, but I did try to beat it on several occasions, and was unable to.

Another one is Sonic Adventure. I beat 5 of the characters' quests, but I've never beaten Big the Cat's adventure (and therefore never played as Super Sonic). Every time I sat down to do it, I found it so intolerable that I was unable to force myself through it, and switched the system off in disgust.

I beat SMB about two years ago, after reading another thread about all the people who hadn't beat it yet.

But, I'm still looking to finish the original Zelda for the NES. I think the farthest I've got is the 5th dungeon.

Mostly newer games, because I beat almost every 8-bit and 16-bit game that I put a lot of hours into as a kid. Here's what I still need to beat.

-Super Mario 64 (or any Mario game since Super Mario World)

-Grand Theft Auto 3

-Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (or any Zelda game since A Link to the Past)

-Halo

-Any of the Sonic the Hedgehog games (both the 2D and 3D adventures)

-Resident Evil 3 (or any RE game since RE2)

-Castlevania 3 (one of the few NES games I invested a bunch of time into and never finished)

-Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (another NES game I played for a long time and could not finish)

I think that is about it.

I've never finished any Castlevania game ever... and I own probably a dozen of them. I really enjoy the series, but for some reason I can never get all the way through them. I have a save right before Dracula in CV Chronicles on PS1, but I can't beat him.

I guess to post I should make give my confession first. I'm ashamed to say I have never beaten Double Dragon.

Now that I've said that, I think everyone who hasn't beaten Super Mario Bro.s should complete it today and we can have a "Post of Repentance" so you can share your victory stories. The fastest I've seen SMB beaten was under 12 minutes, so it shouldn't take long. And don't be ashamed to use the A-start trick as a make shift continue if needed.

So, Good Luck on that road to repentance.

Well There are a lot for me
-SMB/SMB3/All Stars/Super Mario World(SNES) are games that when I am bored at home, and it raining outside, I attempt to beat them but then fail and give up, and then try again another rainy day.

-Final Fantasy 8 - I got to the part with the blue army turrent thingy...and I kept trying for days and eventually just gave up.

Any of the GTAs - Another game to play when I'm bored and want to beat up hookers for money...I'm evil I know.

Pokemon blue/red/yellow... ... just all that training..and...fighting..gaahh, got too tedious. I do pick it up and try all the time...but the same thing happens.

Although it took me like 9years to beat Zelda Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64, cuz I was like 9 or 10 and I didn't have the skill hahaha. Stupid tenticle thingy in Lord Jabu Jabu, I didn't know you could Z-Target it... ...

There are no console games I'm ashamed of not completing (though many I'm ashamed of not having played at all). These are all PC games.

Thief: The Dark Age. What I played of it was an awesome game and, as far as I know, the first stealth-based games in a first person perspective.

Ultima IX. Despite the fact it was considered a major disappointment for many, I still feel I *have* to complete it...almost like I *owe* the series something for getting me so immersed into computer games when I first popped in Ultima IV back in 1991 or so.

Baldur's Gate II. Despite the fact it is considered one of the best PC RPGs of all time, I want to play it with a character that has completed Baldur's Gate and I haven't been able to complete that game a second time with a character to carry over.

Daggerfall. I've restarted it sooooo many times. It's not like it's hard to play, I just keep starting it and stopping.

Out of all of the above, I'm most ashamed of not having finished BGII.

Considering that I often spend my gaming time on really strange, obscure stuff, it's not unusual for me to have tons of big-name titles that I haven't beaten (and usually have barely played at all IF at all). I'm not really ashamed about that, though, considering I get to everything in time. Just within the last few years I've beaten for the first time Super Mario World, Metroid 1 and 2, the first Zelda, Final Fantasy 1 and 2, and I'm sure many more I'm forgetting.

Of those I haven't gotten to yet, I probably get the most flack for Super Metroid and Zelda: A Link to the Past. With Zelda, I'd like to first beat Zelda 2, but I don't really have any excuse for Super Metroid. For the record, I haven't beaten any Metroid games past that one either, and I haven't beaten a Zelda past Ocarina of Time.

From my own perspective, I'm a little ashamed that I haven't beaten the first or third Castlevania games yet, seeing as I'm such a huge fan of the series (and those two in particular) and I've beaten so many of the others, even Castlevania Adventure.

Oddly enough, while it's not really famous or regarded as a classic, I'm probably currently most ashamed of still having Boxxle on Game Boy unbeaten. I've had that cart sitting in my GBA SP case for years, and I was doing a great job of slowly chipping away at it until I hit a brick wall. I'm just a handful of stages away from beating it, and it's driving me nuts that I can't get past this one stage. I don't even want to know how many hours I've dropped into that one stage, let alone the game as a whole, and it got so hopeless that I haven't even attempted it in months. I swear I'll beat this game before I die. :P

I wouldn't say 'ashamed' would be the word. But there are several high profile titles I've never beaten/played:

Zelda 1 & 2 on the NES. Didn't get into Zelda games till aLttP on the SNES.

Zelda: Majora's Mask. Started it a couple of time, but never got that far. It is awesome though....

Resident Evil 2. Played it several times, just never to the end. But then, I loved Code Veronica on the DC and played that through twice.

And I should admit I've never actually done the final battle on Skies of Arcadia. I'll sit there all day long going on about how amazing the game is. I'll go back to it one day and go all the way through in a week.

And I really can't fucking stand GTA.

On the other hand I'm old enough to have completed SMB 1, 2, 3 and World all on original hardware, several times over. Same with all the original NES Megamans and the SNES/GB Zeldas. And everyone should play through Zelda: OoT; it realy is that fabulous.

Pantechnicon
02-06-2008, 12:16 PM
Phantasy Star II. I played it all the way through to the final boss fight but without utilizing the thief character, whom it turns out you sort of need to level-up in order for her to pilfer the necessary number of restorative health items needed to stay in the fight long enough to win. One of these days I'll go back and start it all over again from square one.

I've never finished Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (SNES) or Majora's Mask. I've played and finished every console/handheld Zelda except those two. I have the original LttP SNES cartridge and the GBA version, but I've never played either beyond a minute or two. I'll get to it someday.

Two games come to mind:
- Chrono Trigger
- Final Fantasy 8

The reason I'm "ashamed" is because I've started them both at least six times, and yet I never finish it. Giving it more thought, six times is probably a conservative guess.

Maybe there's hope? Last summer I beat Star Ocean 2, which I had repeatedly started but never finished. I really need to beat Chrono Trigger, though. The last time I played it I tried to beat it as early in the as I could because I was trying to "catch up" on old games I had missed or hadn't played in a while. I won't make that mistake the next time... I'll just play it and a steady pace and enjoy it.

I'm in the never beat SMB crowd. I'd always die on the massive jump on one of the later levels (I think it was 8-2). I need to go back and try beating it again (it's been a decade or more since I seriously tried to beat it).
