View Full Version : Collection Done - 81 PSX RPGs in only 9 years

What can I say? I'm a slow hoarder. I got my Playstation for my 15th birthday in December of 1998. My first games were Shadow Maddness, Legend of Legaia, Star Ocean although what I really wanted was Breath of Fire III, that Christmas I opened two copies. Two nights ago my husband proposed a trade of early birthday presents. He wanted to read his Dark Tower comics, and I finished a nine year collection with the addition of Suikoden II.
So now I present to you my baby, 81 PSX RPGs released in English. Be warned this collection does not contain Castlevania or Legacy of Kain. Lets just leave it at that.

Nicely done. Congratulations on completing your collection. Have you played them all? If so, do you have any thoughts on the best and the worst of the bunch? And maybe something underrated?

Congraulations on your completion. I remember when you were looking for suikoden 2.
It is amazing that there is only 81 rpgs for the psx.
Any other conquests planned?

We need to get you some nice new replacement cases for some of those games. I don't want to remember that your collection came from EB and GameStop :)

Heh. I've been meaning to clean them forever but yeah I'm lazy. Eventually they'll get new cases. I'm not so picky about the plastic as long as the manual and insert are pristine underneath.
As for playing them, I've gone through a bunch, although not all. You'd be surprised how much fun Guardian's Crusade and Shadow Madness were.

Saturn. I have all the cheap games which is frustating because it leaves me with the cash hogs and I don't like to just buy my way into a collection. But there's three long-box shaped presents under the tree so I suspect after the holidays I won't have too far to go. Maybe then I'll buy Lunar 2 and be done with Sega CD as well.
Congrats...as I huge RPG fan myself, that is quite an accomplishment :)
What would you say is the most underrated of the bunch?
Koudelka. As popular as Shadow Hearts has become in recent years you'd think it would get more love. It suffers from a clunky battle system and retarded "puzzles". But the dialouge and atmosphere are engrossing.
Beautifully done. I tearfully recall owning most of those at one time, but foolishly traded them away before I had joined DP and learned the error of my ways. In my opinion, Granstream Saga is THE worst of the bunch, while Rhapsody is one of my all-time RPG faves. Grandia has my favorite battle system.
And, agreed, Shadow Madness was a blast, even though it borrowed heavily from FF7 in almost every way.

Just 2000. I don't know why they bothered with all the console versions at all. It's really a uh... PC thing. That said I was remaking Shining in the Darkness using the graphics from Shining Force 2.
Congratz on the collection. Absolutely beautiful.

That's a pretty damn nice collection. You'll have to take a "shelf shot" of 'em sometime :)
It also reminds me that I need to give Darkstone a try one of these days.

Congrats on the RPG collection, I have a friend that'd love to get a complete RPG collection on the Playstation. So many of those games are just amazing, it's almost all you'd need for the system if you enjoy these types of games.

Actually, Diablo was executed real well for console, their RTS games however attempt to utilize a lacking memory and processing power the consoles of the time had making them quite inferior to the computer releases. I'd like to see a Diablo 3 for console available for play on B.net along with PCs and MACs.

Congrats Daria! A wonderful sight, just looking at the pics is great, to collect RPGs for the PS1 is truly worthwhile.
I have around 50 RPGs for the PS, in the last two years the prices for the games went a bit overboard, (not to mention Suikoden II) that's why I'm hesitant to get more....but these pics give me some incentive...:)
About those GS/EBGames stickers: just remove them, and you'll get the residue easily off with some cooking oil....oh wait, that hint came from YOU years ago. :) (Still doing it with all plastic cases -- the easiest way to get sticker residue off)

The reason Daria has two games more is probably the result of inclusions and exclusions of games of her own RPG list. (e.g. the two Mega Man Legends games pictured in her collection, and three and not only two Digimon games.)

Congrats! You've been working at that collection for quite some time and must have a tremendous sense of accomplishment getting it completed. If there's one genre of game that sets the PlayStation apart from all other consoles, it would be the wealth of RPG's. And while I haven't specifically targeted RPG's to add to my PlayStation collection, I always knew that I would be foolish to pass on any I run across. From what I've seen here today, Arc the Lad Collection, Azure Dreams, Brigandine, Digimon World 2, Dragonseeds, Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth, Master of Monsters, Ogre Battle Limited Edition, Tactics Ogre, Tales of Destiny and Thousand Arms would complete my collection. Some of those are probably going to be not easy to run across and I imagine a few will come with some sticker shock, but hunting for games is often a very pleasurable experience in an odd sort of way. If you spent 9 years to complete your collection, then I guess patience and perseverance pays off!
Have you played Shadow Tower? I believe it's a 1st person action RPG, which sounds like something I might enjoy playing. I ask because I just bought PS2 Shadow Tower: Abyss recently from Japan. It had a big red triangle on the cover and I'm a huge fan of Japanese games with big red triangles. Then I realized I didn't have the original PlayStation Shadow Tower, so I jumped when I saw they were selling for $15 new at Half.com. I've been meaning to give both games a try soon.
I think I read somewhere that Abyss was already completely localized for the US when it was abruptly canceled. In case you might be interested in the sequel, here's a link to its homepage....

Youd be more surprised at them for attempting to port it to the Gameboy (see my site, ptoponline.com for the proto :P)
But very, very nice collection of RPGs. I remember playing Beyond the Beyond when it first came out, that was my first PS1 rpg experience hah.

That's a very impressive collection, but please do yourself a favor and try to get blood omen: legacy of kain. Even though I wouldn't consider that game an "rpg" by any means, unless you really stretch genres, it is by far one of the most overlooked games on the system. Although you do have quite a few million hours worth of gameplay with your other games, and blood omen will take as long as the longest rpg to beat because of its load time...
Sorry for the rant, congrats again. Any idea on what you'll start collecting next?

Congrats Daria, that's a sweet collection and I know what it feels like to proudly dust off the last want on the ole want list and be able to say, "Finally... ye all done!"
I have all the SNES/Saturn RPGs, but it's gonna take two, maybe three, lifetimes to beat them all :p
PS- I'm currently playing through Mystic Quest -- I remember you defending it in that thread. Agreed... it's not so bad... not fantastic, but not shabby

I am jealous of your RPG colelction. I don't really have any collections other than random ones like "all Final Fantasy games released in USA" or tiny ones like "Both star ocean games released in USA". I want all the ps1 rpgs!
But some of those aren't RPGs. Like Megaman Legends and Tron Bonne.

Very nice! That is a personal goal of mine someday, though I'm not sure it will happen. Some of those are just too hard to find. I've been working on my ps2 rpg collection instead to save myself the trouble down the road. Congratulations, and I hope playing them will bring as much joy as the hunt did.

I got close to a complete collection. I stalled when I started looking for Valkyrie Profile. I was not (and am still hesitant) to spend that much -- though there's a certain Saturn RPG that I have spent that much on...
Nice collection. The Saturn and Sega CD are good targets, but only the PS2 compares to the PS1 for RPG collecting...
While I take the stickers off my games when I remember, it can be said that stickers add to the games 'history'. It gives an idea where that specific copy of the games has been, creating it's own character...similar to finding writing in a used book...

But some of those aren't RPGs. Like Megaman Legends and Tron Bonne.
I haven't played Tron Bonne. But I bought it because it's the "third" Legends game. Chocobo Racing certainly isn't an RPG either, but it's in there because it goes with all the Final Fantasy games. Anyway I did play Megaman Legens one and thought it was a fairly traditional 3D RPG. Reminded me of some of the early PS2 games.
As for the PS2 I have 60 something for the system already. But I don't like that many of the games for it. There's an overwhelming amount of "me too" sequals that I just didn't enjoy. Course that's not saying I won't buy the games, they're just not an active target.
I just think that it's cool to have that many RPGs to be able to sit down and "snuggle up" with. RPGs are like good books, while all other games tend to be like half hour sitcoms.

Amen to that, brother! That is EXACTLY how I feel. For lack of a batter word, I feel a sense of "coziness" snuggling up with an RPG and getting engrossed in its story. Much like a book.

Very nice collection. I think that I only have 33 of those games right now (excluding my spare copy of Suikoden II) and I'm looking for at least 27 others you have pictured.
What level of completion do you demand of your RPGs? For them to be officially part of your collection, do you need the soundtracks, maps, demo discs, memory card stickers, lenticular cards, pendants, and whatnot?

It differs from system to system. I'm less critical of my NES games than my Disk based games. But I've managed to track down all the original extras to my PSX collection. Thousand Arms has the mail away Multimedia disk, Final Fantasy 8 has the stupid mini-walkthough, Shadow Madness is the original version with the Jade Cocoon Demo, and of course all the fun Working Design bits.
Lately though as so called collector editions have gotten out of hand I'm less inclined to buy all the extra bits.
For example this special edition was originally $150

I cant place my finger on it but something looks to be missing. I dont know what but somehow it just doesnt feel complete. Still, it's an impresive sight there. Some of the games you'll probly enjoy quite a bit while others (beyond the beyond) are turds of legend. As I remember, a few of them were also quite buggy. Dragon Seeds I believe would freeze during the last area if you were a certain level.
Well, now that you've got that many, perhaps it's time to sit back and enjoy them. My advice, get a few extra PS1 systems or a good emulator for your PC. Your going to need something to withstand that many hours of gameplay.
Also, RPG maker while limited by the space of a memory card is actualy not half bad. It doesnt have all the options as RPG 2000 but what do you expect from a game originaly released for the Super Famicom? It does what it can and while not the greatest, it eventualy got better on the PS2.

Heh. I've got three PSOnes (Old grey faithful, PSOne, and a blue debug unit) and a PS2. I think I'm set.
But hey if you can spot a game I'm missing, by all means, let me know. The Next PSX game I'm buying will be Tales of Phantasia. It's Japanese but the translation project for it's almost complete and if I can copy and burn the game I certainly won't mind having an original on the shelf. That's also why I invested in the Debug system, as popular as SNES translations are I expect the PSX scene to take off sonner or later. Just too many great games for the system to ignore.
As for sitting back and playing them, since posting this topic I've beaten Suikoden 1 and have already log in 20 hours into number 2.

Congratulations, Daria. :) I know you've been working on that collection a long time, and it must be satisfying to finally polish it off. I'm still slowly chipping away at my set. I don't have many big hurdles left considering I got the majority of the pricey games, but since I'm not making an overt effort to finish it up, I'm just casually collecting at my leisure.

Heh, yeah, I've been talking about it on GameFAQs. I've never played a fan translation before, but I'm contemplating giving it a try sometime during my winter break. I've been somewhat keeping up with the project since it was announced, and it seems like it's pretty faithful, which I like. Although, from what I've been hearing from those playing it, it sounds like there might be some major mistakes made in translating a few important plot points. Either that or the players are misunderstanding the game. :P

Everyone has different standards/defintions of what an RPGs is, and I find it hard maintaining my list of RPGs. haha. According to it, though... there's one other PAL RPG called TechnoMage. As well as nitpicky inclusions such as Blood Omen and Castlevania (yes, I went there), and the 2 Monster Rancher games (hey, you included Dragon Seeds).
Excellent collection though, I'm almost there myself. Oh, how i love RPGs. :-)

I was just starting to think my PS1 RPG collection was starting to look very impressive. Now after seeing this thread, I now realize just how LAME my collection really is.
awesome collection, nice job.
i have a question, this might be the best place to ask: i recently obtained a PAL copy of Star Ocean: The Second Story and i know its meant to be extremely rare; i can't even find anyone on the net who owns one. can anyone tell me how much that ought to be worth? the non-PAL copies are pretty easy to come by online by comparison.

I think someone mentioned it, but the Monster Rancher series would be a good adition. I still feel like something's missing after that but as I cant place my finger on it, I'll think about it some more. Castelvania SotN would be good but you've already spoke about that one.
If you decide going imports, you've got more then your work cut out for you. There's so many I dont know where to start. There's plenty of strategy games as well. Oddly enough though, most of the big $$ games over here are dirt cheap to get the Japanese version of. Games like Valk Profile can fetch as low as 18$. The arc series tends to be hard to get complete as the games were sold seperatly but can generaly be had for around 40-50 when found. Super Robot Taisen's a guilty pleasure but as that's almost all strategy I guess that may not be something your after. Lots of members have a better idea of what's available and what's not. I'd sugest going after the Shin Megami games if posible. They wont be cheap though.

Persona certainly isn't. But I'm not plunging myself head first into a sea imports. I have no interest in playing games in a language I can't understand. And since I'm lazy, and haven't even attempted to learn Japanese, I just plan on buying games that have been translated into english. Which for the PlayStation currently totals one game. ToP. So I can leisurely pick up imports one at a time as they're translated. At least that's the plan.

Hey Daria
Very very nice collection. I had "nearly" the same collection as german PAL releases, but now I try since two years to get every PS RPG in sealed condition.
What about one or two of the Namco Museums?...I think they have also a RPG on the disc.
Other question: The Blaze & Blade is a PAL release, right? Was there none US release?
Maybe Techno Mage is also a game for you, did not see it on the pics....

Do you have any idea how much this cost you in total? I've just started collected Playstation RPGs (1 and 2) and am curious what kind of investment I'll have to put into it.

Sammelhammel: Blaze & Blade is indeed a PAL exclusive.
As for how much it all cost me...
I very rarely paid full price for any of the games. So what I paid a few years ago, really wouldn't reflect what prices you should expect to pay today. Many of the games (as evidence by the stickers) were rescued from GameStops and EB while they still carried PSX titles. Many of them before they were even considered valuable. But I have gotten some amazing deals too.
For example I paid $12 for a mint FF7 after the price exploded from the Advent children movies, Rhapsody was purchased new & sealed for $20 from ATLUS direct while ebay copies were hitting $60 regularly. They didn't have any sort of online pay set up at the time, so I had to physically mail them a cheque. Arc the Lad boxset was a gift from a friend who worked at Gamestop and "collected" unused trade-in reciepts so essentially was "free". Valkyrie Profile was $32 at GameStop without a case, but I found a friend online to send me one over a year later for free. I've also been known to flat out steal manuals from display copies once or twice to finish a game. I also distinctively remember paying $15 for Suikoden and that I was splurging by shelling out $26 for my copy of Grandia. Sometimes people have even sent me games because they didn't liek them... like Beyond the Beyond.
My most expensive PlayStation purchase was back in 2005, on GameTZ, I paid $105 for the following lot: Chocobo's Dungeon 2, Diablo, Dragon Seeds, & Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. And then of course my husband paid $100 for Suikoden II which is standard.
But basically the collection has taken me so long because I'm cheap. XD

I only have Alundra, Chrono Cross, and Final Fantasy VII. Used to have Legacy of Kain - Blood Omen, but that was what I traded for FFVII :P

At least you're off to an awesome start. Not a single bad game in that lot. And believe me my collection has it's fair share of total duds. Eternal Eyes? Yuck.

I bought that one for 1.99 new. No joke. I sold it a day later(I think I got a dollar for it, but it was worth it.)

Anyways. My PSX RPG collection almost matches yours. There's probably about 60+, though I don't count games like Harvest Moon or Mega Man Legends as RPG titles(though I do own MML1.)
When younger I stupidly traded Alundra and Gran Stream Saga and sold Guardian's Crusade, Beyond the Beyond(bashed alot but I liked it,) Dragon Seed, and Jade Cocoon. These were games for the system that I actually liked but at the time happened to really want another game but unable to get it without having to do something.
There are others in that list I sold too, but they are ones I sold because I didn't really care about the games.

Well Daria, if you ever have money problems you could always sell your PS1 rpg collection. It's worth a minimal of a grand and thats probably a very modest figure. But congrats on completeing it, even if it's 2 years late:)

I'm currently only a few shy of a complete collection but I just can't (or more like I refuse) to buy Beyond the Beyond ever again. That was by far one of the most boring games I have ever played. I also could not collect Digimon games either. Great job on the collection though.

You must have never played Eternal Eyes then. Go play it and you'll see why it was new for 1.99 and I sold it for a dollar.
Beyond the Beyond isn't that bad. It does have some redeeming qualities. Unfortunately the random encounter ratio paired with the kindof high difficulty are not the games redeeming qualties. If the encounter ratio was quite a bit less then the game would have been much better.

Well, at least Beyond the Beyond is pretty dang cheap. I've had to sell two or three spare copies in the past, and I doubt I got more than $10 for any of 'em. Doesn't hurt much to add one to your collection.
And it's got some awesome music too.

God, that's beautiful. My PS1 collection is pretty small compared to this, I'm just collecting RPG's in general. I don't have the means of taking quality pictures, so I'm terribly, terribly sorry for taking up so much space on one post.

All the games are complete with box/case, instructions manual (every instructions manual of the games above that came with a registration card still has it intact!), inserts, and extras if included (stickers, spine cards, posters etc). Every game is in excellent to mint condition. None of the games are Greatest Hits/Choice, cheap options, whatever. Everything is black label and original.
Must say that I thought my PS1 collection was bigger, but if you look at the list I think it's obvious that I only collect "good" games (I've missed some, obviously), mainstream if you want, rather than pursuing a complete collection of games or genres for a system (I do envy you, though, Daria!). A major exception to this is Folklore, which I only bought because I wanted a RPG with the PS3 when I bought the system.

I think it's awesome that you have so many complete PC games. I don't even consider my PC games a part of the collection because we never bothered to keep anything for them. Just the discs. This gen PC titles are pretty much all available on Xbox, but I would love to have boxed copies of Fallout and Baldur's Gate.

I like to discover for myself what I think is good or bad. There are some not so popular titles with some real charm. Guardian's Crusade (psx), Spike McFang (snes), and Ghost Lion (NES) are all games I may have overlooked otherwise. But don't get me wrong I'm not only interested in PSX games, I collect RPGs for all systems.

I'd like a CIB Fallout aswell! Damn hard to find, though! I agree with your final point. Alot of JRPG's had a special charm to them, and I agree about Guardian Crusade, which was my first JRPG. The disc is now scratched beyond belief, though, so I might pick up another copy of it.
Getting 100% complete copies, in excellent to mint condition, of "retro" PC games is pretty hard nowadays, seeing that most of them came with the big paper boxes which easily gets tears and such, and that many games came with a poster etc, and various spine cards. I won an auction on eBay for the Baldur's Gate 2 Collectors Edition for about $30, which was a pretty good deal seeing as it's in top notch condition, t-shirt never been worn, all the trading cards present (there were 16 in total, 8 was randomly put in each CE, but the seller had gotten his hand on the other 8 that didn't come with his, so I got all 16), the post cards, sountrack cd, and the cloth map, all in mint condition. Definitely the prettiest CE I've ever owned.
Should be noted that I have the European version, which apparantly is rarer than the US release. There's only one auction out on eBay.com for the US version, right now, and except, a copy I found today on eBay.co.uk, I've yet to see the European version on eBay since I bought mine two years ago.

You must have never played Eternal Eyes then. Go play it and you'll see why it was new for 1.99 and I sold it for a dollar.
I own it and picked it up for almost nothing when I worked at Blockbuster and they clearanced out their games, just never have been bored enough to play it though. Just figured if the price is right and it's an RPG I'll add it to my collection. I played Beyond the Beyond around the same time as Wild Arms and it just didn't compare. It seemed unfair to taunt Beyond with Wild Arms better everything.
