View Full Version : Is my Genesis outputting video in PAL mode?

Does anyone remember that Cross Products Mega Drive system I stumbled upon earlier this year? I finally managed to get two Genesis 1 power supplies, and the thing turns on just fine. I managed to obtain an RCA cable for the thing, but this is what shows up:

Does anyone have any clue what's going on? Or is this some sort of video capture issue?

Edit: Ah hell, I think this is a Genesis problem - it doesn't output stuff correctly. Bloody hell. I'm using RCA video, by the way.

I hate the Genesis, go figure.

I noticed your pic the LED light area is white, not red. It's a euro Genesis, so it would indeed be outputting PAL.

Change your capture card settings to decode in PAL.

Change your capture card settings to decode in PAL.I did. It doesn't work. All I get is a frozen screen.

The only one that kinda works is PAL-M, and I get the same results as NTSC, but in black and white.

I get some colors in NTSC.

Edited to add:
This thing is definitely outputting stuff in PAL. After fiddling with the dips, I managed to get the thing to boot the Sega CD in Japanese mode! There MUST be a way to get this to boot in US mode somehow. The system ejects the disc tray fine, at least.

Edited again:
The CD tray works! It played a CD fine, woo. :D

So you got the video out working?

Cause I noticed on my Genesis, if I force a PAL video output (NTSC model), it will output 50Hz, but a black and white image with little glimpses of color, due to the incorrect crystal used for the color pulse (correct term?).

It still looks like a european PAL outputting Genesis though, euro was the only one with the white plastic piece I believe.

have you tried it on a tv? if you can show what it does on a tv i may be able to help more. showing through a capture card will give different confused results for every different capture card, however if you put it onto a crt tv, ill more likely be able to say whats happening.

it could be outputting ntsc50Hz or something dumb like that, as most capture cards wont see that as a real format.

also, does it say genesis or megadrive on it? because remember all non-asian megadrives are pal, and all genesis consoles are ntsc.
can you link me to somewhere where i can actually see what console you are talking about? i ouldnt find another thread referring to it.

I think he's talking about this: http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j238/foxhack/DP/11-07-07scdfront.jpg

Looks like a euro MD on an american SCD.

For more info on this thing, go here:

Assembler owns a complete kit. I'm asking the same things over there, but basically, this is an European development Genesis system made by Cross Products (they developed several Sega dev tools). The dips seem to control several settings, but I have no clue what they do. I've been fiddling with them and have managed to change the region of the system so the Sega CD boots in Japanese mode, but that's about it. I'm hoping Assembler will provide me with some scans of the dip switch layout, at least...

Well, Main CPU is the Genesis, and Sub CPU is the Sega CD, those terms I do know.

Please don't fiddle around with the dip switches without knowing what they do, you could quite easily brick the whole unit.

If you ever feel like selling it, let me know. I can give it a good home...

Well, I wouldn't do that if people actually coughed up some info on the damn dips. :P

And yes, I am planning on selling it. You're the third person that's asked me that. I dunno if I'll sell it on eBay or here, though... or the price.

Those machines would help me in learning more about how Sega CD works with the Genesis. I know quite a bit about their interface, but not enough to hack up a commercial machine to be like that, especially with multiple BIOS's.

It was probably used via RGB output though.

90% of dev machines out there have a dip switch combination for reflashing the unit. You accidentally flip that switch and power it on, you're looking at a dead unit. Chances of repairing it are basically nill.

As for what combination that is... who knows. I don't recall ever seeing the documentation on that thing.

Okay, fine. :P

Now that I know it works, I decided I'll be putting this up for auction tomorrow evening. Hope someone well, bids on it...

maybe they could help? :P
