I've been collecting for a fairly long time and have finally realized with my retirement only three years away I really need to weed out my collection of the things I'll never play. I plan on starting with the SNES and working from there. Not sure what I will do with the games that fall by the wayside but please do not send me offers as that is not what this post is about.

I have almost 500 SNES games now (maybe played 25% of them) and would like to weed them down to a group of games that are must-haves for the system. I enjoy RPGs, platformers, racers and puzzle style games but am not opposed to shooters either. My wife tends to play puzzle games or RPGs. We both play the Super Scope games and my nephews will be in the area after we move and should like them so I plan on keeping those.

What I would like to do is post my list of maybe 100 I currently plan on keeping and then 50 of the undecided ones and let people point out things like 'You can't get rid of Empire Strikes Back! It's awesome!' for example. Then I can add it in or try it out and see if it is something I would like. Also this is for a gameroom so representative samples of genres I don't like (sports, etc) would be ok to add too. I can add another post with 50 more after all suggestions are in for a group.

So here is the list of keepers and the next post will be 50 undecideds. Please check themout and offer up suggestions. Thanks,
AlanD

Oops I should point out if it is on neither it is because I don't have it. Nothing wrong with posting those items as I definitely have not quit collecting and it gives me ones to look for. Possibly later I'll use some of the losers on the popularity contest to trade for the ones I need. Thanks for the input

There's what I'd keep, though you could lose Aerobiz as long as you kept Supersonic. Bll Lambeer's is fun but shallow...it's no Speedball 2, but I used to have a lot of fun with it back in the day. You might be able to do without it.

I second Aerobiz, good fun.

If you have Super Buster Bros.(its not on your lists) I would keep it as well. It's a really good puzzler. And along with DKC 1 & 2, I'd keep 3 as well.

AlanD
01-01-2008, 04:19 PM
Cool. I'll add all those. Space is not a premium but I just want to make sure I don't regret getting rid of something that I currently own. Bill Lambeer is one I'm cool with keeping if it is a good sports game that others would like to play. I do like Brutal Sports Football on the Jag if that is any help for other suggestions.

Surprisingly I don't own DKC3 but that was one I planned on finding. Also Super Buster Brothers is listed on the first list. Wife loves that game as do I so it was a definite keeper.

You've gotta keep Ballz 3d, clayfighter and Brutal: paws of fury simply because they are really nice fighting games.

Just wanted to second (or third) a couple things already said.

Aerobiz: Supersonic and Contra III are must keeps.

And you NEED the first Actraiser. Seriously, NEED. :)

AlanD
01-01-2008, 07:07 PM
dlopez: I'll add all those if you say they are decent. A few fighting games in the mix would be worthwhile even if I'm not into the genre. Other players in the gameroom will be so they are worthwhile.

Bandicat: Haven't got that far into my 'undecided' list yet. Those are just the A-Cs. I was going to hold off so people wouldn't be overwhelmed with 400 I am thinking about getting rid of.

Scooter: Already added back in and will definitely look for the first Actraiser as well as DKC3.

If anybody wants I can add another 50 cart list to the mix but wanted to hold off until conversation slowed on the initial 50. Just let me know and I'll post them

I'm slowly starting up my collection of SNES games and I'd have to say I like the multiplayer games myself. However, most of them are sports games. If you don't have Micro Machines, I think that's one game missing from your collection. I also like the Top Gear games. Both are inexpensive but entertaining.

Sweater Fish Deluxe

Here's a few I'd keep:

Aerobiz: Supersonic - actually, I've never been a big fan of this game, but a lot of people seem to like it, so I'd keep it around either for others to play or because of the possibility that I might discover I like it one day when the stars are aligned just right

Battletoads & Double Dragon - a totally great scrolling beat'em up, which is a genre that I notice you don't seem to favor in your list of keepers--the SNES has some of the best on any home console, though, so you have to keep a couple at least.

Biker Mice from Mars - if you like Rock'n'Roll Racing, you should like this one, too.

BreakThru - I've never heard of it, but is it a port of the old arcade game? That was a pretty cool game, as I recall.

Captain America and The Avengers - once again, I've never played this on the SNES, but absolutely loved it in the arcades.

Contra III: The Alien Wars - c'mon, you know you want to die!

Darius Twin - I'm not sure from what you said whether you really like shooters or not, this one is decent, but I think there's better ones on the SNES that you don't have listed among your keepers like Space Megaforce, U.N. Squadron, Gradius 3, etc.

Eek! the Cat - probably a pretty stupid game, but I used to love this cartoon, so I'd end up keeping the game, I'm sure.

Final Fight Guy - wasn't this a Blockbuster exclusive or something like that? I think that makes it worth keeping just as a unique item and it's not a bad game, either. Final Fight 2 is better, I suppose, but this is the original, baby.

Gradius III - A must have.

Man, this making me want to buy a SNES. What a great system.

joining the choir of those who say keep Biker Mice From Mars.

AlanD
01-02-2008, 04:30 PM
Well it looks like Biker Mice definitely makes the cut. Lot of feedback on that one. Also I should point out that rarity means little to me on these. I have the Starfox Super Weekend, Donkey Kong CE, Final Fight Guy etc but am more worried about good games than rare games. If they are both, good enough but no special consideration needs to be paid to rare ones if they are not fun.

If a game is suggested I'll pretty much add it in since the goal is just to weed them down quite a bit. I can more easily enjoy 100-200 games and take the chance of having a stinker (to me) in there than see the board discuss a game and talk about how great it is and realize I just got rid of it without ever trying it out.

mailman: Super Castlevania IV made my original cut. I have it in my collection database by the title shown on the cart. Not sure if the titlescreen or box is different but that is the way I have it listed.

dlopez: Only one that may be around is the nephew but sure he would probably like it - and if not what is one extra cart in the collection :)

Graham: Not sure if you are kidding or not on that one. It is universally panned from what I have seen and remember. Could be worthwhile for comedic value if nothing else.

Sweater Fish Deluxe: All your suggestions are added in. Thanks for the input. I do like shooters but am not a diehard fan to the exclusion of anything else.

98redM6: I do have Micromachines but not on my keep list yet. Also have at least one Top Gear game but not sure which. I'll grab them out also since you say they are good.

Sparkster: Noted all of them but based on my earlier comment - Do you feel DKC CE is fun in itself or just one to keep due to rarity? I already have the normal version as a keeper.

thetoxicone: I have the Genesis version of 1 and the Saturn version of 2. Do you feel they are much better to the point I should keep them instead?

Killer Instinct
Mario Paint
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat II

All pretty monumental games for the time, and I prefer the first two MK's to the robot-infused sequels. Mario Paint is definitely one of the unique classics of the 16-bit era. KI has some nice rendered graphics and I always took to the fighting engine. Don't know why they never made more of those games on later consoles.

If you're trimming your collection I don't understand why you need SMB Allstars, SMB World, AND SMB Allstars/World. Keep the 2 or keep the 1.

Drakkhen is really a pick? Miracle Piano? (haven't played) Monopoly is fun on SNES? (might be just me, hate dice rolling on video games)

I don't know the rest of your collection, but you may be able to out Bust-a-move, Space Invaders, and Williams classics (assuming you own "better" versions of these on other consoles). Same with Atari Hits.

Personally, I think you could drop Rock n Roll racing for Biker Mice, though many would disagree. I 10th the following: Aerobiz and Contra III, at least Earthworm Jim I, one Final Fight title (if not on another console), Gradius III (though not the best in the series by a long shot IMO), Mortal Kombat 2.

ssjlance
01-06-2008, 01:58 AM
Faceball 2000 is pretty good, although by no means amazing. Fire it up and see if it suits you.

Also, Mortal Kombat II and Mario Paint are definite keepers. II is the pinnacle of the series (not saying much, but still an amazing fighter), and Mario Paint was fun to fool around with when I was about 10. Then again, that may just be nostalgia speaking, so be careful with that one.

Drakkhen is really a pick?

There are mixed opinions on Drakkhen. I think it's great. Very atmospheric and creepy, and pretty unique.

Magic Sword and Mr. Do! are classics. I would hold on to those.

Thanks for all the inputs guys. I appreciate it. I'm really not into fighting games but I do have a lot of people wanting to play them when they visit so I certainly should keep a few of the best.

The Miracle Piano, Bust-a-move, Space Invaders, and two Classics are straight from the wife's selections so they pretty much got added in without question :)

Point taken on the SMW/All Stars ones. I'll make a cut there as the duplication isn't needed.

Drakkhen was a pick simply because it was classified as an RPG on a couple of sites which is mainly what the wife plays. Wasn't sure it was quality or not but she is partial to those so I gave a blanket pardon to all RPGs.

She also prefers games on a cart system since they are easier to get running so unless there is a much better version on another cart system she is more comfortable with the ones on the SNES as that is what she is used to playing.

I really need to sit down and play Biker Mice. Never would have selected it without input from the board. With this much support, I am definitely missing out.

Here's another group to look through and make recommendations on if you would:

Phalanx deserves the keep for the box alone. Primal Rage is another iconic fighter that might be worth hanging on to, but it's no KI or MKII.

Graham Mitchell

Nosferatu is pretty cool. I'd hold on to that. I think it's a pretty well-made game.

I think SNES Populous is probably the definitive version (outside of the PC version, which I've never actually played). If you ever crave to play Populous, the SNES version would be a keeper.

Sweater Fish Deluxe

Oh no! Sports abbreviations! I would personally keep either NBA Jam or NBA Hangtime (isn't that the one that's a sort of sequel to Jam without digitized graphics?), they're pretty fun games, especially multi-player.

Outlander - not exactly a good game, but I always find that there's something compelling about it, at least until you run out of gas and have to go through the horrible sidescrolling bits.

Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures - This as an all-time classic game. Original play mechanics, a great atmosphere and lots of variety and little secrets to discover.

Pocky and Rocky 2 - Another classic.

Populous - Like Graham Mitchell said, this is probably the best version of Populous on any console, but it's still just Populous, which is generally speaking a pretty boring game.

The only ones from the previous list that I would kee are Mario Paint and Mr. Do! which others have already mentioned. That Jetsons game sounds intriguing, though.

I've always been a huge Street Racer fan. I always have fun playing the mode where you have to knock everyone out of bounds(I'm not sure what the mode is exactly called) I could probably play just that mode all day and not even race. By far my favorite Mario Kart clone.

Street Fighter II Turbo is definatly a classic.

If you don't have any of the PC versions, I'd keep Sim City as well.

And since you like puzzlers I'd give S.O.S. Sink or Swim a spin before you sell it to see if you like it or not.

Graham Mitchell

Whoah, you've got lot of quality stuff on that list that I'd hang on to.

Selling R-Type III would be a no-no. 'Nuff said.

I haven't played Run Saber, but what I've heard is that it's very similar to Strider, and is an excellent game, quite underrated. I'd give it a try before getting rid of it.

SimCity is also a keeper; the SNES version is great, though a little slow.

I think that StarFox Super Weekend cart is kind of rare, isn't it? I'd keep that. It doesn't sound like that was even available in stores.

Stunt Race FX is a good game, too. It gets a lot of flack because of it's appearance thanks to the early polygon processing from the SuperFX chip, but it's quite fun and there's a lot to do in it. I think it was either a Miyamoto or Gumpei Yokoi game, also.

Road Runner's Death Valley Rally - Give this one a play and see what you think of it. I think it's a fabulous game, but some people don't like it at all.

R-Type III - One of the best SNES shooters released in the U.S.

Space Megaforce - *THE* best SNES shooter released in the U.S.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - It's no Star Control, but still a pretty cool space RPG. Would have been cooler if it was based on the original Star Trek, but whatever.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 - A decent port, but mostlye worth keeping just as a showpiece of what the SNES can do if pushed to the limits.

Street Racer - Like others have said, and excellent kart racer.

Thanks everyone for the great inputs and I'll certainly take all the suggestions on board.

oobgarm, le geek and also everyone who has stayed with the thread this long: I really appreciate you going through every list and weighing in with your thoughts.

Please be aware that I made my 'keep' and 'questionable' lists long ago and that is why some early suggestions are still on there. I honestly did not ignore what previous posters have said about which games are good and that I should keep. Just too lazy to weed them back out of my list until the end when I reorganize everything. :)

That said, I'd like to drop the last of the list on everyone and if you could make your suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Twisted Tales of Spike McFang has as got steller reviews, I have a copy but not really played much into it myself though.

Super Turrican, TMNT Tournament Fighters, are also held highy as well.

I'm also a fan of Top Gear myself.

Super Noah's Ark 3D - You absolutely have to keep this. I mean, come on: an unlicensed Christian themed game based on the Wolfenstein 3D engine where you throw fruit at animals? Yoiks! And it's pretty fun, too.

Super R-Type - Not up to the level of R-Type 3 or Gradius 3, but still a good shooter.

Super Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi - I've never played these, but I think they're supposed to be pretty good.

Super Turrican - Keep it only if you don't have Mega Turrican on the Genesis.

UN Squadron - Another of myt favorite SNES shooters. If only want to keep a handful of shooters, U.N. Squadron, R-Type 3, Gradius 3 and Space Megaforce would be my picks.

Zero: The Kamikaze Squirrel - Very underrated mascot platformer.

Nice little game. And I do mean little. You can beat it in 3 to 5 hours, seriously.

No joke. I thought it was, until I played through it. Fun while it lasts, though.

Thanks for looking through everything and giving me your thoughts.

Don't sell any game unless you know in your heart you have absolutely zero interest in (playing) it now or down the road. If there is even an inkling you might regret selling, just keep the game, because you'll probably re-buy it later on if you sold it.
