This system looks like a fun system to own. My question is why are there so many add ons to the system to play games? Seems like their are a variations of the cd roms and super cards and their systems. Was this just badly planned by NEC? Seems kinda confusing trying to play a game on the system when you know you need so many different add ons just to make the thing work.
It would drive me nuts if Nintendo did this with their NES or SNES. Imagine if Nintendo said sorry you need to buy these add ons to play Kirby or SUper Mario 3. Oh sorry you need to buy this add on to play Star Fox. I guess they did do it with the Nintendo 64 but still.
The Super Grafx looked like a fun system. I can't believe they threw the system away after only a few great looking games. I thought Atari and Sega was bad.

I am in the same dilema. I am currently trying to find the CD-ADDON for a reasonable price. There is one on ebay for 229 but thats a bit more than I really want to spend at the moment.

Do as I did and get a PC Engine Duo (or a Duo-R/RX). It's cheaper than a PC Engine/CD-ROM2 combo and it saves a lot more space.

I just got a Region Modded Turbo Duo R off of D-Lite and I have to say it's great. Also at 250 you can't beat the price.

For the PC Engine or the US system? You can usually find a Super CDROM2 for around $150 (last time I checked) without a box. The Super CDROM2 comes with the Super CD 3.0 card built into the unit (like the Duo). The only other upgrade you would needed after that would be the Arcade Card Duo (not the Pro) which runs about $25-30 and maybe a 6 button pad for Street Figher 2 and the SNK ports ;)

I should also add that the PCE Duo has the Super System Card 3.0 built-in and a save battery, meaning that all you really have to get is the Arcade Card Duo (if you plan on playing games that use it, like Popful Mail and Fatal Fury 2).

back then in 199X just to play a game or converted MPG Video or even subtitles you need a special card you had to install. A great example is the Starfighter card for Wing Commander the game.
My question is why are there so many add ons to the system to play games?
The PCE is a free based system that is the arcade at home.
As with the Sega Saturn ability to play photo cd with a special card the PCE does not have the correct instructions to play certain games programmed for it.
