View Full Version : Anyone remember this old Mr. Do! box art?

[I think I probably started a thread about this once a long time ago, but I don't think there's any way to search for "Mr. Do! box art" on this board (except maybe with Google, which turns up nothing).]

When I was very young, I remember the day my family got Mr. Do! for the ColecoVision. I distinctly remember the box art being very unusual, and I've never seen anything like it since. All the characters (Munchers, Diggers, Badguys, etc) were depicted, but were represented by relatively realistic people in costumes. The art style resembled something out of Ninja Scroll.

Does this ring any bells?

You had one of the several European CBS versions. I think I know which one...I used to have it.

Was it this one? (picture is a bit blurry)

Aha! Yes, I forgot to mention that it might have been the European version. (Did the Colecovision not have region lockouts?) I don't seem to recall seeing that image on the manual I have.

Is there a nicer scan out there?

No, not really...CV carts are all NTSC/PAL dual format and region-free.

Perhaps you didn't...Coleco and CBS did some screwy things toward the end. A lot of the CBS stuff was dumped in North America. It's also not unusual to find these boxed Euro CBS versions with American Coleco manuals (or even cartridges)...in many cases they just used CBS boxes.

Perhaps if you dig around, but I'm not sure where. Not too many sites with nice Coleco box scans.

Pity the game itself wasn't better.

Mr. Do! on ColecoVision? Certainly not as good as the port of Mr. Do!'s Castle, but it wasn't bad.

But it was a letdown, as were many 1983 games. It was clearly rushed out, as indicated by the inferior graphics (at the very least, Mr. Do! should have been multi-colored), and the fact that you could get "stuck" to an apple if you went right up to it.

It should have been much better, but thanks to the effort spent on that stupid ADAM computer, CV games suffered in 1983.
This is one reason why, overall, they were inferior to the 1982 batch.

The search for this box art is going to be another one of those utterly hopeless causes, isn't it?

(A pity; it's right up there with that Atari 800 Pac-Man box.)

Which one?

The scan is very small, but I think I can make out what you're talking about...

Yes, that's the one he's talking about.

In fact, that appears to be precisely the same tiny, blurry scan depicted in the aforementioned http://www.colecovision.dk/mrdo.htm .

Alright, here you go...but watch out for the guy with the shovel.

Huzzah! A new candidate for Most Highly Questionable Box Art. Thank you very much, good sir. Where did you find it, anyway?

It must have been especially created for the Coleco Vision version, since there's no way someone could look at the arcade version and possibly come up with a Mr. Do dressed all in white... or Asian with pointed ears... I particularly like the depiction of the Blue Muncher as a Grim Reaper on a harvester. Or is the guy with the shovel a Blue Muncher? No, he must be a Digger. Ahh, I love it!

You mean the arcade version didn't have Shaggy from Scooby Doo, an angry black man with a shovel, a circus freak, The Sandman, and the Grim Reaper riding a tractor as enemies, and a de-hooded Asian Klansman as the hero?

Yeah, CBS had some custom artwork made for the European versions and some of them are really out there. I don't know who did them, but whoever did was obviously smoking some very strong opium.

I was so jealous of my friends who had the Colecovision and all I had was my Atari 2600. Box art was much better for CV over 2600.

Good calls, except let's call the angry black man Mr. T.

Fun thread - my first thought looking at the thread was "what the hell, this is 70s Justice League / Superfriends television artwork"

Seriously, doesn't Mr. Do look like Wonder Twin Zan?

I don't know about anyone else, but the Grim Reaper riding a tractor is badass. I'm not sure how accurate the cover art is, but that alone would make me want to buy the game.

Oh, I was tempted...but he's missing the mohawk and gold chains, so that's clearly not Mr. T. ;)
